Coltaine got Uber Eats 😂 Amazing review! Completely agree that the Felesin to the wirlwind Goddess transition was a bit too fast. I also think it would have been great to follow Coltaine himself a bit more, he was such an interesting character. I had no idea how emotionally attached I had become to the Wikans and the Seventh until the slaughter at the end. Heartbreaking. Yeah, as glad as I am that they will be back, I do feel like death is cheapened sometimes in series where too many people get brought back to life.

Personally I found GotM to be a lot more ‘fun’ than DG which I found exhausting (though that was intended by the author). I still liked it, but came to appreciate it a lot more after reading the next couple of books.

BOOM Just finished DG BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like gotm it went from a book I was not loving to one I loved at the very end. It's like climbing a mountain through mud then at the top looking down and seeing the beauty that lies below

5:45 No. The former is far more common than the latter. People who suffer from shipwrecks or similar disasters tend to come together and not split apart. Though i suppose there's some survivorship bias at play when i say that. Those groups are way more likely to survive than the latter groups. Edit. Though i suppose the author is an anthropologist. And they're always way more concerned with "what people are capable of" to care about what people are actually likely to do.

I agree, wheel of time last year Malazan this year, save the big series for summer. The first 5ish minutes before I say let’s get to the characters are very light spoilers pretty much just plot setup and some spoilers for who survives from the last book

Just finished Deadhouse Gates and holy shit, it was much better than GotM! Icarium and Mappo are my favorite characters so far, although I do like Felisin and Heboric as well. Also Fid and Kalam. And Apsalar. Well you get it, I love them all. The last 100 pages absolutely broke me.

You’re going to love Memories of Ice! I can’t wait for your review. MoI is my favourite Malazan, you get a host of new characters but a slew of old ones, so I feel like it has a good balance of the two.

Just finished this book. It was SO exhausting, but in a really good way. I understand the convenience complaint. I have that same complaint, but overall didn't mind too much. I haven't read a book that did brutal weariness and futility better... And the themes of cycles and time. And yet having moments of laugh out loud comedy. I am so looking forward to the next book and learning more about all the things!! (Though not in the next book as that tells an entirely different story...) I think the sappers were my favorite 😄 Also, I believe that the resurrections will have ramifications...but we'll see.

I read Malazan before WoT and honestly, Malazan makes WoT feel like a childrens novel. Most people who read WoT before Malazan struggle with Malazan. That being said, you need to try Malazan. Try it try it try it. And Ericsson ends his books amazingly so don’t stop halfway through.

@@kyleandstephaniemiller3925 I’d disagree with that, just finished bone hunters and I’m following along perfectly honestly I’d say it took more books for me to get a good grasp of WOT then it did Malazan. But yes, a must read

Enjoyed this review but keep on trucking. Memories of Ice is crazy good. I do agree with some other comments here though that Coltaine did SO much for so many people that asking for better tactics and ingenuity seems a little much, but I also understand why you would wish he pulled off some crazy/tactical genius maneuver.

No plans on stopping! I loved what Coltaine did but as I said to the other guy I wanted MORE of the gritty details and planning, the journey was awesome but I felt there should’ve been a few instances where coltaine pulled off something insane

@@TheJackedNerd. 100% understandable. Thinking on Deadhouse Gates after the fact has made me like it even more. Especially seeing many of the ripples from it in later books. I’m currently 3/4 of the way through Dust of Dreams and man… there is just so much going on.

hey, glad to see another review of this great book. quick note on Felisin becoming Sha'ik: the transformation began long before she actually ended up in the desert with the other Sha'ik's body. Drijhna had been communicating with her beforehand. Remember her weird dreams she had of being in a river of blood I think? I don't remember the details, but she was getting messages, and she was being trained for this role in advance. Sappers are ❤!

Only 7 minutes in so far but I'm holding my tongue. Just need to say that you've made certain assumptions about certain things that don't line up with the "reality" of the book because of failing to consider ulterior motives/perspectices. Apart from that Erickson goes to great pains to show the other parts of the world moving in the background alongside the plots of a given book. It probably won't change your view of the convenience in this book but as you go on to Memories of Ice which occurs, in part, concurrently with DG you see what's been moving on the other side to spur certain story beats within DG which seem excessively convenient. Leg day is best day.
