You just can’t get enough compost,we have seen many people take an allotment on and in a couple of years give up,think of an allotment like building a house, you start with the land, then the footings, then the build, then the interior.much the same as an allotment, get the soil sorted first and it takes 2/3 years, then you reap the reward, allotments are a lifestyle not a fad,our friends & family look bewildered at the amount we grow but we love it,happy growing to you all.

I have my nose in skips all the time as there is always decent off cuts of 2x1 inch batten,4x2 and many other treasures for us gardeners, fruit and veg wholesalers have skip loads of waste veg with banaas and cabbages packed with potasium and nitrogen. I love these composting updates it's something I want to Master. Great video Steve.

Gosh! this makes hot bed composting look a lot easier than having to rake around to mix up the layers of various different ingredients, and not having to worry about what proportion of each to put in. I’d love to see how quickly this heat it up As always, thanks very much for all of your very Informative videos

I put my veg waste and leaves on the lawn and run over them with the mower which does a great job of cutting them up and of course give me grass for the compost bin

Tea bags do not decompose in domestic compost, only industrial composters, according to tea companies such as Yorkshire Tea.

yup we're proper tea leaves in a proper pot girls here.... we were joking the other day that we think our garden is fueled on coffee and tea - the amount of it we seem to add to the compost :D Loving seeing you getting your hotbin going - I can't wait to see you empty it :D

Steve, you would have been proud of me yesterday, I took my big barrow and rake and collected all the grass the council left on the verges outside my house. We also collect seaweed from the local beach which is quite legal in most, if not all, beaches in England. Also cardboard from supermarkets. I love composting which sounds strange from a lady of advancing years 🙂. Good video as always.

I have at least 500+ lbs of pulp from apple pressing each year, and it requires layering with all my green, kitchen, etc. waste, or it will stay as great undecomposed lumps until Spring. I use 2 builders bags for green stuff, another one of cardboard and a few big lidded bins (rats will go for it if exposed) of pulp all awaiting what's already in the composters to sink down or rot enough for runner bean/sweet pea trench filling.

Steve, I’m interested to see you using your used cat litter in your compost. I run a Cattery and have soooo much litter (wood pellets) to dispose of but have resisted adding it to the compost that I use on my vegetables. I don’t have a hot bin, is it ok to add it to my cold compost pile?

How is your DIY hot compost bin doing - the white one behind you at the end of the video that you made with sheets of polystyrene and cargo straps? Is it anywhere close to as good as the professional (and very expensive) version?

Wouldn't that composter be losing heat whilst you're chopping up that vegetable matter. Would it have been better to chop it up first before removing the lid.
