Making way for an airport in the Philippines | VPRO Documentary

Bram Vermeulen travels to the Manila Bay in the Philippines, where the Dutch dredging company Boskalis is responsible for land reclamation for the construction of a new international airport.
The company recently made headlines by threatening to leave the Netherlands if a new law is passed making companies liable for the possible negative consequences of their activities abroad.
The €1.5 billion contract is the largest in Boskalis' history and was concluded during the time of populist President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte campaigned on two promises: build as much infrastructure as possible and the ruthless 'War on Drugs'. Before Duterte came to power, he warned that Manila Bay would fill with the corpses of drug dealers. In six years, thousands were executed without trial, including environmentalists.
Bram Vermeulen examines the consequences for the hundreds of Filipino families who must make way for the airport, and the activists fighting the project. What moved the Dutch company to take on the project and the Dutch government to support it, despite previous promises to protect Manila Bay?

The big question is do we need new airports? Answer: absolutely yes! We have the worst airport in the world. We have 10 million Filipinos working and living abroad. We have to be competitive economically compare to our Asian country neighbors. Philippines is an archipelago with a lot of tourism potential for all people around the world to enjoy. This infrastructure project will help a lot of poor Filipinos directly and indirectly in the future to better their lives. Use being poor as motivation to strive better. I was poor, now I am successful. It is very sad that we have to destroy some part of nature and relocate, destroy other people's livelihood and way of life. But this is a cost that majority of the Filipinos are willing to take for us to move forward. Thank you Netherlands for helping the Philippines to build a better future.

Things to point out with the people interviewed 1. The Advocacy group people don't have Bulakenyo accents (compared to the local fishermen) 2. They speak with weirdly deep Tagalog vocabulary 3. They also speak with a quick English cadence Other Filipinos already know what's up 🚩

vpro documentaries are depressing. The phillippines is developing, will hopefully develop further with this new government, and will hopefully be less corrupt than before. Why is Vpro showing the saddest aspects of the Phillippines getting a new airport? That lady at the beginning was crying to leave a tin roof shed that she called her house. The problem isnt the airport, she needs an actual house

It's a bitter pill to swallow that social safety nets are not a priority in our country. Even for private property owner, payment for right of way for expanding highways, are miniscule and payments are years delayed and if paid at all. You can imagine how worst it is for illegal settlers.

as much as the international people hate Duterte for his war on drugs. the majority of filipinos voted for him knowing what he will do to these evil people. he may not be the ideal president, but he was the president we need and deserve at that time.
