    @@LivingFrugalAndPrepping Good video. Have you thought about using tin foil for caps? Seems to me, they'd push out better, since the material is less dense. Also, my understanding is that foil caps were used in the old days. Also, I lightly push my caps on with a dowel rod, to make sure they are seated properly.

    This comment has to do with being prepared, not a comment about the video. During the recent freeze in Texas, I was without power for over 24 hours, and then the power was off and on (mostly off) for several more days. I pulled out My emergency gear. The solar generator (only 400 watts) worked great. Used it to keep My laptop going...for movies and internet. Solar backup radio, to keep up with the news and music. The camp stove and the heater, each will use butane, the screw-on type of propane bottles, or the larger gas grill propane bottles. The stove I set up under the vent hood in the kitchen, the heater went to keep a bedroom warm (with ventilation). I did make one big mistake...I forgot to fill up the 100 gallon water bob. I had to use bottled water to cook with instead of just to drink, and had to go out and bust up the ice on a 110 gallon water tank outside to fill a bucket water to flush the toilet. Even after the power returned, I was still without water for two more days. The owners of the well shut it off and drained it, took them that long to come out and turn it back on. Lessons learned...I need to build a bigger generator (to run a refrigerator or freezer), don't forget to fill the water bob, I need to get a place that is not all electric, and I need to move somewhere I don't have to depend on someone else for their well.

    I experimented with the red plastic caps also. I found if you place the cap on the nipple and then push the hammer so it seats the cap further onto the nipple they will work. However it is risky with a loaded chamber of course, but in a pinch, they work.

    I’m using Wild West ring caps from Walmart. $3 for 216. All of mine fire in my Philadelphia derringer. The one that misfired had no powder in it. The powder is under the little paper disk in the ring cap. I doubled the powder in one cap easily in about 30 seconds. I’ve been looking down the barrel and firing the caps and there’s a lot of spark in there. For me they work well. Make sure you clean the nipple out because of the paper in the caps. If I was hunting I’d double the powder in the cap just to make sure it fired.

    Could you try matches next?... Its simply scrape the Red Phosphorus of the striker and scrape the heads of the matches to a fine powder. carefully blend together in a 1:2 ratio and put in the caps with a drop of acetone on top and let dry. You dont need alot, one match head +Red Phosphorus will make a good bang. Ive tried it reloading the plastic ring caps for capguns and it works well. Also, it may work with plastic caps if you add the punched paper caps into the plastic caps? they're flat on the bottom. Thanks for the videos.

    @@LivingFrugalAndPrepping hey I don't know if you have heard of a product called" Monster Pops", they are a lot like the white whippersnappers we used to throw around as kids, but these are not toys, though it appears that that is the general public idea for them, these are very sensitive to and kind of percussion, they come 20 to a pack, are as loud and probably close to as powerful as a black cat firecracker. I had some extra time on my hands today, the kids were restless, so I made a couple blowguns out of half Inch PVC pipe, these kids are from 8-5, the 5 year old got the first stick of his dart into the tree we were using as a target. Anyway, they went home, and I got to thinking, a dangerous thing for me at times, but I rolled a paper cone dart with one of these monster pops, packed a half gram of KNI4+AL flash powder, snugged everything up with paper wads and a bit of tape, got to say that they exceed my expectations by far. I have no affiliation with the makers of these things, and wondering what the actual legality is, but at least same time I was able to get 20 boxes for around 40 bucks, they work great for BP or flashpowder. Pyro-Tech might be where I got them from, let me know if you want further information on these crazy, yet oh so glad red tape ain't in the way world we find ourselves in today. I think you might be foweling the vent hole with paper, soot and general schmutz. Try cleaning the vent holes with a vent prick between shots. Maybe also oversize the vent holes? Also, load a few granules first against the bottom. Then a star, heavy paper up. Then a few granules of BP (#4). Then the last star I don't know how but if you could get a granules of BP into the nipple you would have powder in front of the cap rather than behind it. Theory being to get the fire thru the vent hole Worth a try?

  • @KathrynLiz1

    @KathrynLiz1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oversizing the vent holes is a bad idea. The blowback is a major cause of chain fires and larger vents make this much more likely as the blowback can lift the hammer off the nipple and spread the flash all over the place. All it needs is a loose adjacent cap and you have an unintended discharge.

I shoot percussion muzzle loaders and and have done something similar with powder in the cup. Really messy with residue all over the place. I stumbled upon a nipple primer that drops about 1 grain in the nipple. With just a single cap in the cup I've had excellent results and no mess. Those red plastic "ring" caps have worked fine for me... just cut them loose from the ring (I used a pair of nail clippers) and force them on the nipples. Without powder in the pistol (Remington) the flash actually comes out of the end of the barrel. Sets off the powder very well, nearly as good as a #11 CCI...I think sometimes there's a very slight hang fire, but only a tenth of a second or less. Not sure why all of yours didn't go off... perhaps the Remington has a heavier hammer fall.... they sure do feel beefy to cock, and lightening them up via the strain screw invites misfires anyway, so I never do that. I used to have a little .32 Colt percussion that only fired the plastic ring caps 3 or 4 times out of six..... again perhaps because of a lighter hammer strike.... perhaps it's a Colt thing... the geometry and hammer nose shape are quite different to the Remington..... Interesting video..... We can't buy the little punches for making the cap bodies here in New Zealand, or the compound to go in them for that matter, but I might just make a punch and die for making the bodies out of soda cans as per yours and try cutting the bottoms out of the ring caps (roll caps are difficult here too now) to put in the aluminium cups.... would be easier to put on the nipples and if I can get the size the same as commercial caps, my mechanical capper will work with them. I have a fair few caps in stock right now, but we never know how things might be in the near future, the world situation being what it is at present. Thanks for the video... always good to see how others are getting along with things like this... 🙂

    Yes... things are a bit short here in NZ too..... and the last box of caps I bought was $20 (10 Quid) so it was 20c a shot..... or a bob a bang as it were. The toy caps are very cheap, about a dollar or so for 75 shots, so if we can make them work well it's a saving on cash as well as a good expedient for if/when 'real' caps are not available. Yeah... I grew up in London... born in 1942 and came to NZ in 1959, so gone a bit 'native' out here.... LOL.

    @@KathrynLiz1 Hey Liz, if you are still using toy caps, take a look at Hans on YT on his "CapRemoval 1" video. He has a great technique using water to remove the top layer of paper of the caps and then easily scrapes off the compound. He uses 8 per reloaded cap which i dont think you need if you use a pinch of black powder with it.....maybe i'd use 3. But then, he is reloading .22LR cases, not percussion caps. Hope he helps.

    I have been attempting to do DY] caps for over a year and lost interest. Your videos have rekindled my interest. I have finally got 5 out 6 caps to work in a row loaded with powder and ball. I use 1/8 " hole punch. 1 dot, small scoup of BP and another dot. THE ducco glue mix with acetone seems to work good. I have the Prime All and just don't like how dirty it is. After you said your formed caps had a rounded bottom, I went and pulled out the ones that I made...the bottoms are almost flat. I have never had a miss fire, but then again I use only Prim-All or store bought caps...haven't experimented with other mixtures/chemicals yet...did some research on it though. A local store was selling out of their black powder accessories..I ended up with over a 1000 no. 11 caps, I already had 2 Prime-All kits...so I kinna quit researching...for now. I got my maker from Sharpshooter when I bought the Prime-All. I did have a slight laugh when I saw how you store your made caps...I use the same little containers. Mine came with My barrel brush holders from a gun cleaning kit.
