you can buy stump remover at any big box store. That's 100% potassium nitrate. As for sulfur, try the feed stores, and look for the stuff that isn't ground up. The charcoal you can make yourself. Willow burns the fastest, according to elemental maker here on youtube.

For loading powder into caps, slice a drink straw in half LENGTHWISE for 1", cut off one side, you got a tiny scoop. Trim down until it will fit easily inside your caps. You now have greater control and waste less powder.

I think your delayed fire is from the paper stars you're putting on top of the match heads. It's obstructing the nipple, and the powder has to burn through it. From my testing of match heads, I've not seen the delays you showed. I use a drop of Acetone to help secure the powder to the cup and have had good results. My best results was 1 match per cup for percussion caps (tap down and add drop of acetone, wait 24 hours before use), and about 1/3-1/2 match per small pistol primers (tap down, no acetone...use the anvil to secure the powder).

Update: I know you like your stars, but you might try this. A leather punch from Harbor Freight, using the largest punch in the rotating head, phone book paper for a cap sealer ( might need to punch several layers at once, then separate). Tiny circles on a soft-ish surface (padded card table). When you pick them up with a matchstick, press hard, and you get a partially cupped circle that goes into the cap dead on, first try.

@@LivingFrugalAndPrepping I find that the red plastic caps fit on the #10 nipples ok. They are too small for the #11 nipples. I cut the barrel off of a plastic cap gun so I can see how much flame comes out the barrel. There are three kinds of red plastic caps. The German Super Bangs from the Dollar Store,, the Chinese caps they sell at Wal-Mart and a cheaper cap from China that has a white paper wad in them. The Wal-Mart caps generate a 2 1/2" Jet of fire that should set off most pistols and rifles. The German caps should be similar. The caps with the white paper wads Will clog up the nipple with the wad. The trappers that used the 22 reloader in the old days used strike anywhere match heads to prime their 22 rounds so it should work. They used them to kill critters caught in leg hold traps. The critter wasn't going anywhere so if it took more than one try it was ok. Also the shot was at very short range so accuracy was not really required. Maybe their matches were better. Idk. Potassium Chlorite will not ignite by impact without red phosphorus. Match heads on "Strike on BOX" matches are Potassium Chlorite and sulfur, as an FYI. If you're adventuresome, you can always try Fulminated Mercury. It was used as primers in early cartridge munitions. Just be VERY careful...load the caps while it's wet and allow to dry in the primer cup.

  • @benjaminjarrett9816

@@EDFETHER I actually crush the match heads as a flammable material to ignite the powder charge. The toy caps go off igniting the match head powder sending sparks and flame to ensure a detonation. Plus, look up the chemical interaction between potassium chlorate and sulfur. It is impact sensitive, primol from 22reloader is this mixture with an added ingredient: charcoal which acts as a cushion or stabilizing agent. Seriously look it up on KZread, Mercury fulminate is a good one for sure, I would love to make it if I could get my hands on some nitric acid.

@@benjaminjarrett9816 To each his own. IMHO, the toy caps is excessive. Match heads work just fine and reduce cost/complexity by half. And if you're looking to re-prime cartridge primers, there's no room for a toy cap under the anvil. BTW...take a hammer and strike a "Strike on box" match (Potassium Chlorite + Sulfur). Does it detonate? No. It needs a catalyst....like Red Phosphorus, or some other reagent. Don't believe everything you see on youtube. This very channel claims to nitrate paper by just soaking it in Potassium Nitrate, when proper nitration requires Sulfur Acid + a Nitrate source (like Nitric Acid). All that video did was show how to coat paper in Potassium Nitrate crystals. Yes...it burns quicker, but it's not Nitrocellose. Just be careful with what you see on youtube....there's a a lot of misinformation and smoke/mirrors to get the viewership up.

@@EDFETHER you’re misunderstanding the purpose for nitrating paper, all he is doing is making the paper easier to burn for his paper cartridges. I have used that method before and I have settled for using receipt papers for my sharps cartridges and revolver ammo. It seems to me you didn’t fully comprehend what said in previous comments, these methods are for cap and ball weapons. Stop and think for a minute, I was talking about a different video entirely. There are chemistry channels that talk about mixing sulfur and potassium chlorate. It’s the same mixture used in party poppers, I have also used those for my percussion caps. You are talking to people who use these methods regularly. Show a little class and learn a thing or two. Like I also said, the flames from the caps need to be stronger; which is why I add match powder as flammable agent. I know the matches are not impact sensitive, they don’t have to be and all I need it to do is be launched at detention while ignited to set off a powder charge. I’m done explaining my methods, go try something useful and stop bothering people like us with limited resources. Side note, you don’t really know what the nitric acid was going to for do you? You need nitric acid to make mercury fulminate, stop being a dumbass and listen.

If you have a little chemistry knowledge look into lead styphnate which is used commercially in primers and percussion caps. Mixed with a little crushed glass and a binder you’ll have professional quality caps that are far less corrosive than using match heads. Make sure to check federal, state and local laws first though. They’re surprisingly permissive in most of the US.

I think the Matches should be the last resort, of all the different methods as they are the least productive since they have been neutered down and are half as good. The toy caps are the best approach if they are the good ones and not the cheesiness crap! Prime all is the best but is not cost effective if you plan to shoot a lot.

I tried out the red star caps, used the red roll caps made in Germany, star caps with match heads as well and while they work well enough in the test range with just 5gr black powder for testing, wad and a cotton ball stuffed in the chamber at the actual outdoor shooting range a full load of 20 gr with .36 cal ball won't work reliably. I get 4 out 6, 3 out of 6 etc and never get 6 out of 6. Now with Prime All from 22 shooters they all work and work well but currently have a 1 month waiting list for orders to be filled as they are backlogged. No easy solutions but thanks for the info on the wooden matches. I tried ground up match heads with red stars and they didn't work well but perhaps just the match heads is the way to go as I did not try that.

A lot of people who try this will use a paper roll cap or a ring cap from China that has a paper wad in it. These bits of paper can clog up the flash hole in the nipple. This condition will cause delays or failures to fire. So the best thing is to use a bit of bronze wound guitar string to clean the flash channel and keep the nipple clear. The best thing I have found is the old German ring caps without the paper wads. I chuck up a nipple in a drill and hold a fine cut file to the sides of the nipple and reduce the diameter of the nipple so the cap fits just right. A gun with straight through ignition into the powder charge such as that deringer or a percussion revolver or an under-hammer or mule-ear rifle design works best In designs were the fire has to makes turns like in a drum and nipple design these weaker caps may not work reliably. If I was hunting with a cap like that I would remove the nipple and dribble a little powder down into the drum to make it more sure to fire. Thanks for the video.

If you get hurt trying to make these things, get a lawyer and sue them (I think most of them come from Vista Outdoors) there is no reason these should not be redily available. After they start losing millions of $, then they might add a new building and add on.

interesting video, I've seen this method used as a replacement propellant too. One thing to note, the striker on the 'strike anywhere' matches does not contain phosphorous to my knowledge. Only the 'strike on box' do, as it's part of the chemical process. Something else I'd like to see is testing with the plastic ring caps filled with this material. 10:03 I reckon the tips only don't have enough of the green bit of the match to function reliably. Since all that remains is whatever edge came off with the tip. Personally, I'd use the whole matchead method. You could also consider nitrating your paper before cutting it up into stars. What did you use to form the caps? I see you went with soda cans, but I'm having a hard time finding a former.

  • @kalebjohnson6090

The tip of the match contains a mixture of potassium chlorate and phosphorus sesquisulfide. The rest of the match contains sulfur, a smaller amount of phosphorus sesquisulfide and other inert ingredients. The phosphorus sesquisulfide is a non-toxic substitute for elemental phosphorus. As for not being able to find a former, I've made successful caps with aluminum foil and a hex wrench of the appropriate size to form the caps. There are videos on how to do this.

Tannerite (ammonium nitrate + aluminum powder) has to have something going supersonic to set it off. It wouldn't work as a primer compound. ANFO is a similar explosive, it is ammonium nitrate and fuel oil sometimes sensitized with aluminum powder. It still has to have a small amount of TNT to set it off. Both are very stable explosive compounds, so not useful for primers/percussion caps.
