I also tried the krazy glue and had the same results you had, I tried the Duco Cement as well and was recommended by one of your viewers and it worked well, I put one drop in each after they had dried for the 24 hours and it still seemed to penetrate well into the prim-all and it was not noticeable at all, no problem putting caps on. At first it looked like a gob of glue but it all settled well into the cap. I also found that sanding the aluminum from cans with 400 grit sandpaper then cleaning off well with Acetone before punching out the caps and keeping clean side up worked real well and required nothing to keep the prime-all in the caps. I used 2 snuff spoons in each cap, 1 drop of Acetone, let the sit for about 5 minutes then packed it down with a flat punch and let sit for 24 hours, it solidified well in the caps and stays in place, nothing else was required. I even put them in a container then dumped them all on my work bench and it still stayed in caps. Also, thanks again for recommending the snuff spoon, makes it much easier to get the stuff into the caps. Back to the Duco, be sure to use only one drop and it will flow kind of quick from the tube. The viewer also told me that the Duco also help to seal out the moisture as well.

Sounds good. I don't think I had enough Prime-all in the caps. I think the hairspray works really well though. I'm going to work on it a little more, When I get it all set and working good. I will make a very short video on it. Next week I'm going to be casting some round balls. Take care and stay prepared.

Hey bro! I made a star form board with a #25star driver. I drilled a 1/2 inch divet. Then a 1/4 inch hole. I used a fine recip. Saw blade, small triangle file and fine sand paper to form a smooth star cup former. I then drilled a slightly smaller hole sanded smooth and then a slightly smaller rod to push the star cup into a tight cup. 1/2 inch punched beer cans heated with soot down to lube and wow! A 4 hour experiment. Snug fit, not too long. I just cut tips from green diamond white tips into a tiny glass bowl. A teaspoon of 90% alcohol and chopstick .I wetted the brown striker and rubbed it into the bowl. I added a bit of fffg black powder. A spritz alcohol sprayer washed the striker brown into my mix. I crushed the slurry and dipped it into my cups. I went back to scrape the tiny bowl and kersnap!!!!!!! Poof! It works! Now to dry the caps and slowly press them on the nipples.

I use acetone with Duco glue dissolved in it. I put about half a tube into about 6 ounces of acetone. This is a guesstimate. Works perfectly and dries fast.

  • @RetiredDuke

I use 1 tube of Duco cement to 7 ounces of Acetone and it works fantastic. I carry my caps in a pill bottle and you can actually shake the pill bottle up and the caps hold together without losing any compound. And the amount of acetone and Duco you can make hundreds of caps. Just make sure to keep it sealed when you're not using it and to shake it up real well to mix it before you use it. I just use an eye dropper with it and it works great.

The gorilla glue and others like superglue leave too much residue behind to be useful for more than one or two shots. The Prime-All is supposed to have a binder in it that is activated by the acetone - BUT that can certainly be improved upon. One part shellac in six parts acetone and your priming compound is not only bound together well, but stays in the cap well also. The hair spray actually sounds like a good idea, but I haven't tried it myself. As an aside, glue choice is important for paper cartridges as well. I find school stick glue works well. Haven't run into any issues with the compound "bouncing out" of the cap. Just gently placed a drop of the acetone on top of the compound and let it gradually absorb in.

Hair spray! I will try it. I did and old almost empty clear nail polish filled back up with acetone about 5:1 looks to work well. I am waiting for copper sheeting and my die sets, but I have already made some aluminums with a hard wood anvil and a drill bit die, but about half ripped before I cut a star pattern, I think case lube may help with the aluminum and my copper.

He was on the right track with the Gorilla glue but you need to use a celulose based glue because it's really flammable. Try useing a mixture of about 7oz of acetone (i measured it out in a measuring cup) to a 1oz tube of the Duco Cement. Just squeeze the whole tube into the acetone.Cover it and Shake it up real good to make sure it's mixed then use an eye dropper and put a drop or 2 into your cap with the primeall mixture. Let it set up over night and that should work. I used a mason jar to mix things up in so I know it's air tight and the mixture won't dry out on you. You'll have enough mixture for several thousand caps. Always make sure to shake up the mixture real well before using it. I hope this helps y'all out.

If you're having a problem with your caps tipping over when filling, try drilling holes in a piece of wood slightly larger than the cap and about 1/2 as deep as the cap is tall. Works great for me for filling and compressing the primer mix.

FYI I did a batch of test dummies of old used large riffle primers hauls minus the anvil with acetone mixed with clear nail polish about 5:1 to bind it and keep materials in place. It did work, but I am not totally convinced, as I did not use the proper cap body, did fit loose on cylinder nipples and did fire with a strange yellow smoke/gas, did not sound as energetic as I would like. I drilled a slightly oversized O.D for my cap shell in a piece of scrap hard wood, and I too used a proper sized I.D. drill bit with case lube and pushed my cap shell through the woods hole to size and shape the OD and ID of mine a little better. I then cleaned my lubed cap shells with carb cleaner before filling. Keep those Smoke trains SMOKING! Let's GO BRANDON!

After many years of making my own caps, powder & projectiles there is one detail that I haven't heard mentioned. Perhaps this will help. While rare, sometimes I had caps misfire. Either requiring multiple strikes or never igniting at all. My solution was to incorporate a small amount of ground glass into the primer compound. (Especially with match heads!) Since I started doing that I can't remember having ANY misfires. Once my compound is ground, mixed & ready, I use MEK to dampen it into a slurry. The slurry is then introduced into the cap and set aside to dry. The MEK appears to evaporate 100% and it's rather quick too. Anyway the slurry dries to like a hard plaster material. It will NOT fall out. For my powder, I found that reducing the amount of sulphur from the common recipe also reduces residue making cleanup much easier without any reduction in performance. For projectiles, I prefer a hollow base, conical bullet. Even in my Derringer (Identical to yours). Accuracy and performance is incredible. Hope this helps.

Overall about 40-50 % of the attempts are keepers with the rest having splits around the flat facings. I will try to us a lubricant to see I can increase the success rate.
