Regarding the fireplace, I believe that there exist special "glass doors" to these old kinds of fireplaces that can replace/be added to the black ones. So you would actually see the fire. These types of old fireplaces are everywhere in sweden and I always thought that it was a shame that one could not see the fire due to the closed doors. I am not 100% sure that they exist, but I vaguely remember that I stumbled upon them on the internet some time ago.

Put out some extra videos and get the money to fix your fireplace. I live in a huge woodland that i don't own in a 300 year old stone cottage. My fireplace is my number one priority . Rosie it will change everything I promise. It creates such a feeling of sanctuary, magic, safety, warmth and protection. Make it a priority!!!!!! Honestly you will be amazed. I know what it's like on your own, everything is different- different needs. Somethings are so much harder. Somethings are so much easier! Get your fireplace up to the top of your priority list (manifest the money, do some sponsorship - reach out to eco flow etc) and then get your own way of getting wood. I use dead standing trees there's loads and I collect kindling all summer. Self sufficient heat (and water) is a game changer.

The amount of time it takes to renovate and create these videos is more than a full time job, it's impossible to make more, I don't even manage to get one out every week because there's simply not enough time. I haven't had a day off in ages. They also do not generate that much income so unfortunately the fireplace will have to wait!

I rally agree with the suggestion of being able to heat your building with firewood. As long as you live in the Swedish forest it must be prio no 1. It will save a lot of cost of electricity as well. I’m sure some nice Swede has an old iron stove that you can get for free.

Yes. I guess if you have never had a fire you don't understand its importance. Sadly it's another thing we have been brainwashed out of. The system wants us reliant on the system. I never realised how important the woodstove is. Now its my number one priority. Especially as my wood is free I just have to go and process it which is a lot of work but i refuse to buy wood when i live in a woodland. I also have bore hole water which is great but it runs off electric. So if i have a power out. I have no water. Another thing Rosie needs to be mindful of. I would not want to be in Sweden in winter relying purely on electricity to heat that would scare me.

I totally agree about the fireplace but perhaps you could just do a freestanding wood stove somewhere in your cottage and forget about that old chimney and I understand how long it does take to make these wonderful videos I just hope you never go away I so enjoy watching you and learning so much from you

As a landscaper in Sweden i would really suggest as you have a beautiful field at your torp, to keep the field as a native flower meadow( slåtter äng). It's low maintenance (one a year cutting)and absoulty beautiful to always have something flowering from spring to fall and create habitation for endangered species. Especially good considering the extinction rate for meadow species.

@@wildrosie @Roaming Wild Rosie glad to hear! you could collect seeds from your dried flower heads already on your medow, and sprinkle them under the long grass directly on the soil. I would not buy flowerseeds that are mixed with grass seeds(usually big store brands). Skanefro or pratensis are probably good options.

I am in the USA and am thoroughly your channel. It’s like reading a book and I can ‘t wait until the next episode. I love your gentle voice, your beautiful hands and the simple life you are living. I’m also amazed at the things you do alone.

I think one of the most impressive things I've ever seen is someone painting a white ceiling with a black top on and not getting a drop of paint on the black top!

It's really coming along. I'm amazed at how much you have accomplished. The place has gone from foreboding and kind of creepy to very warm, inviting, and homey. It's truly wonderful. It will be awesome when you get it finished. You will have time to do other things and just live your life. Keep up the good work. 👍 We are all pulling for you. 😊 PS I pay over 100 usd a month for utilities. Utilities are brutally expensive. Maybe later solar panels might be something to consider. I would love to go solar, but I need a new roof on my house first. I want to put on a metal roof over marine, pressure treated plywood. That way, I won't ever have to replace the roof again. 🍃

You certainly don't live in Stockholm then, snow for Christmas isn't as common as we'd like considering it's still dark. I have no problems with Christmas in the tropics but then again I'm old and the traditional holiday isn't as important for me, but daylight is. I do like seasons, but winter here is too dominant for my taste and summer too short and precious.

Rosie, to Remove the RUST FROM, Your oven Plates, soak the plates in vinegar for a few days. Place extra cloths You may have, soaked in vinegar, place them ON TOP of Your oven., also leave them there for a day or two. Use steel cleaning wool, to give them a good scrub. I have two old chimneys in my cottage, one of which the upper part was so bad we had to take it down. I was hoping The part inside the house is still ok so i might be able to rebuild it myself. Not sure how difficult it would be. I hope Rosie gets that sorted out. There is nothing as nice as having your own fireplace. I love the sage green color!

I have also always had that dream and this spring I finally made it real. The cottage and the abandoned farm is in really bad shape and it will be a long process. I would love to start designing but have to make the clean up and renovations first. 😊I hope you can reach your dream too.

Yes, if her chimney didn't work, she should've started a Patreon or similar to pay for the chimney fix. It's not sensible to just rely on electric heat in a country like Sweden which gets so very cold. What happens when the power goes out? Yikes.

Hej Roaming wild Rosie! 11:37 For leaves, use a räfsa. They are made to collect leaves. It makes the work much easier. If you leave the leaves behind, they become fertilizer for the plants. There is a risk that you can get moss where there is shade. I live on a forest plot. I never räfsar the leaves. They turn to earth.

Thankyou for the vlog; I am full of admiration for your tenacity and love your design ideas. Is that a fuel/wood burning cooker? What a bonus! another source of heat! Its an amazing oven.. not ugly rosie.. its practical and presumably works in the environment you are living in? Use it. You will start to love it. Why use an electric heater when you have that which is free to load up? It's a no brainer rosie. You are living in the wild now; not in a flat in London - this is how living in the wild really is; and the stove running constantly in the winter; providing heat and the ability to boil a kettle and cook and keep your home warm is fundamental to the sort of life you are leading now. I grew up off grid and the heart and warmth of my home was the Aga.

It is definitely not an ugly oven and says something about the history of the space you’re living in as otherwise it’s all going to be new and yours. Many people would give an arm and and a leg for an oven like that and it must have cost a fortune in its day. Worth getting it restored further down the line.

Thanks for the weekly dose of motivation, Rosie! I am renovating a small house in Canada and feel like I am not getting things done fast enough... I find your measured pace to be inspirational... I am teaching myself to embrace the 'slow' and savour the little accomplishments. Now if I could just be more philosophical about living in the mess that comes with renovating, that would be a true victory!!!

Oh gosh I feel exactly the same! I cut so many corners because otherwise I’d never get anywhere, haha! And yes the mess is not great. Maybe it’s for the best I’ve never owned my own house before and almost always just rented a room somewhere - so I’m used to only using a small space! I can barely imagine what it would be like to finish the house and actually be able to roam around the whole space freely…. I bet you feel the same 😊

Just a thought re; kitchen stove - are you aware you can buy 'Blacking' that will restore the top of the oven, once scrapped off old crust etc you apply Blacking, buy online, and stove looks new and resilient again - I did the same in Italy.

Nou zijn jouw kijkers hoofdzakelijk uit andere landen dan uit Nederland en kunnen aan jou ook absoluut niet horen dat je er geboren bent door het perfecte engelse taalgebruik. Maar waar ik naar toe wil is, dat in jouw situatie, en ik weet niet of dit al eerder geopperd is, misschien niet omdat wij, dus de Nederlanders, van oudsher een fietsvolkje zijn en vele formen en variaties van tweewielers kennen en berijden. Aww, sorry to hear that about the chimney. Nice to hear you have a "rörspis" though, that's a really good style of heater to have once you get the chimney going. Swedish classic since the late 1700s! You'll find once it's going it's going to change the entire experience. Not just the fireing itself, but all the work around it. I love going out and chopping firewood for half an hour or so. That birch on your yard will make good firewood, but you kinda need to hurry in getting it split and stapled so it can dry out and not start to rot. Cut and split it and store it off the ground and covered from rain and snow. I like the green too, it's a classic kitchen color. Really fits a kitchen of your style.

The ugly corner is now beautiful. I like your woodstove Rosie, unfortunately not functional at the moment, but try to sand down the rust, and polish it with "spislack". You could ask for quotes of lining your chimney with steelpipe, so you can use the woodburners. It is the cheapest and easiest way to get your chimneys approved. Electricity costs too, so it might be a good solution financially. And remember, your fridge gives out a lot of "free" heat. Do not close it in - to take advantage of the heating it gives. 😊

Impressive work and a gutsy effort Rosie. As a female high-rise construction and underground mining safety rep adept at the things you are achieving, I feel a duty of care to bring a few things to your attention without sounding like your mother. I am not trying to scare you but to make you aware of certain dangers. I noticed you wore masks, and eye and hearing protection, awesome, but I did notice you not using a mask when cutting the timber. Pine and red cedar can break up as fine as asbestos and can also lie dormant in the lungs, to safeguard yourself please use your mask when cutting or even drilling into the said timber. Talking about using glue, my hubby built my daughter's cot and he glued and screwed it together without checking the dimensions of doorframes, etc. Well to cut a long story short, we removed the window to put the cot into Megan's bedroom. Fun, fun oh yeah nah lol.

It all looks very lovely, and the feeling of a "Home" should really be there by now. I think that the primary thing now would be to get the chimney fixed, so the stove can be used - it gives a lingering and cozy heat, and saves you on some screaming when the electrical bills arrive during the winter...

Rollering a ceiling is messy,I always put down dust sheets on the floor and cover anything else too,and always wear old painting clothes so it really doesn't matter about drippage or splats,that is the best way I find for me anyway. I don't think the stove is ugly at all.

The oven is beautiful. A reminder of days gone by of a cosy kitchen.

I had exactly the same wood stove in my croft. It warmed so nicely and I could also cook on it. so my advice. Prepare the chimney. worth investing in.

Wow - you're doing a fantasic job with this nice little "torp"/cottage, Rosie 🙂! You're not asking for advice but I just want to tell you that I, many years ago, moved to a place like this but without electricity and water and the first thing I did was to have the chimney restored. That allowed me to get warmth from the "rörspis"/tiled stove and food from cooking on the "vedspis"/kitchen stove 🙂. I never regretted that! A small advice, though, is that you (IF you want to be able to sometimes in the future use your fireplaces), before you built a cupboard close to the kitchen stove check out with your chimney sweep what sort of fireproof material you must use according to our swedish rules - good luck and lot's of love to you!

It turned out SO beautifully, not only do you have a great eye for design but the skills it takes to make it happen, I would say that’s something to be very proud of and thankful for❤

The moss green in your bathroom is the darker color from your plaid and this sage green is the lighter from the plaid 😜 (I love those toned down greens too sooo much 😭) and it looks blue-ish coz of the warm (orange-ish) wood surfaces around 😁

Loving the slow yet steady progress you're making on the house. You put so much effort into every little detail and it shows, when you're finally done, it will be totally "you" My fiancé and I are currently waiting on news from a realtor up in Västernorrland about a house we're interested in, so who knows, we might be joining the ever growing community of Dutch speakers in Sweden soon-ish.

With your Ingenuity I’m quite certain this is a task you yourself could in fact master. Love your channel and personal story. Thank You for showing the world it’s quite satisfying being by oneself!

27:51 with so much eye for detail, that plantpot with the cactus in it, overhanging the edge by a centimeter SCREAMS: AAARRGHHHH! at me. 🙂 It completely breaks the peaceful radiance of the corner... I say .. move it in so that you have about a centimeter of 'clean edge' to the side of the pot to restore balance.

I am partly retired and partly employed and own a house in another part of Sweden that needs repairs. Why shouldn't I be able to move there and fix it up the way I want it. That was the thought I got after today's vlog. Maybe I should start my own vlog.

You could hammer that old rusty nail partway into the inside doorframe toward the top, bend it and use as a rustic door lock.

I love your oven, they can be a great source of heat

For what it’s worth, I love your stove and oven. It adds a bit of old world charm to the sleek Scandinavian kitchen.

I would definitely want to get the chimney working again to use the fireplace as it is meant to be, and that lovely wood cooker!

Hi Rosie, take a look at the video’s from Martijn Doolaard, a famous Dutch hiker who is doing the same thing like you, high up in the Italian Alps, he is using a tent stove in his tent during these cold seasons, maybe you can get a permission for using such a stove in Sweden.

Beautiful video, I am happy that you have painted the area by your stove sage green because it looks warmer and more stylish than the ice cold blue. Great progress on the kitchen with the panelling and ceiling painting. I love that you got a strimmer, your grass will be easier to mow now. The chimney can wait til next year but it should be a priority so that you can have a warm & cosy house. Try getting more sponsors like Jackery and Bluetti who make portable solar generators and other eco products.
