Making It to the Olympics for Judo, Then and Now - An Interview with Nicky Yonezuka

Ойын-сауық

Shintaro sits down with Nicky Yonezuka ( / judonick_jkc ), the second generation of the famous Yonezuka family. Nicky shares what it was like growing up in a Judo family with his father, Yoshisada Yonezuka, who was a highly accomplished Judoka in Japan, and making it to the 1980 Olympics at 16 years old. Shintaro and Nicky also discuss what it has been like to be the head sensei at the Cranford Judo Karate Center ( www.cranfordjkc.com/ ) since his father's passing in 2014, and coaching his two sons, Jack ( / thejudoman ) and Nick ( / nickyonezuka ), who are training to become Judo Olympians themselves.

That description of coming off the mat in your 40s and feeling like you're dying, cracked me up. So familiar 😂. Great interview. Thank you both for your KZread channels.

Of the many great conversations this one is perhaps my favorite because his humility comes through

Yes! I'm so hyped for this one. The Yonezuka family are absolute monsters on the mat.

What a great conversation! In future casts, would you consider analyzing USA Judo's withdrawal from the American Judo Alliance, and whether you think it's good or bad for judo in the US?

about those unusual tournaments at cranford jkc, one of those was my first tournament, and it was very cool. I was probably about 6’1” then, maybe 185-195 pounds, white belt. I got hit with a drop seoinage from a green belt who was much smaller than me, and tripped by a yellow belt who was only a little smaller, but much older. it was really fun.

I remember those old Cranford dojo competitions where you added up points based on belt rank, age, weight etc. As an older brown belt I ended up facing some green belts but younger, tougher guys. They still mauled me, LOL! Nice memories :)
