I believe If Judo had a family or group of people that publicized and postered it the way the Gracies did BJJ, it may have been the more popular grappling art. It’s no coincidence that the original UFC’s didn’t have many Judoka going up against the Gracies. Judo has the biggest index of throws, sweeps, and takedowns, all of which are amazing to watch. It obviously birthed BJJ but I think some forget Judo still has a good fundamental ground skill (about a bjj blue/purple belts worth depending on the player) I would love to see it gain some popularity in the US.

I left BJJ to train Judo I am a former boxer and kickboxer and dabbled in mma/bjj I much prefer the dynamic aspect in Judo. Without being cocky I can handle myself if the need arise, but Judo for me is a better option to grapple with on the street 100% I respect bjj 100% and acknowledge it is brilliant for mma and 1 on 1 fights. However, I would take Judo every time

@star35mm both are very good in their own right. Judo allows the use of explosive force on an opponent. Bjj takes it away from your opponent.

It is the more popular grappling art though, its like 10 times more people in the world doing judo compared to BJJ. My impression is that BJJ and wrestling is more common in the US

Its like taking a greco guy and throwing him into MMA. He wont necessarily he a good fighter because Judo and Greco arent fighting. Its a sport. Yes it is fight related but at the end of the day its a sport. You can be a great Judo player or Wrestler but a terrible fighter. You wince and shut your eyes when someone punches at you. You have terrible footwork and hands when punching etc. Some Judo guys are natural fighters. Karo Parisyan. Fedor Emelienanko. These guys were able to take their judo and use it because they can fight and understand fighting so they can apply judo skill correctly. Same goes for wrestlers. The art doesnt make someone good. Its the person and how they use their given arts and knowledge.

Probably not. Judo relies heavily on the gi and doesn’t work well in mma especially stand alone. There’s never been someone who trains predominantly judo that has been a ufc champions but there’s been many bjj champions

Judo is special in the way that u don't know what is comming.

I did judo in highschool. I wasn't very good but it was a lot fun and it taught me to have respect for others and myself.

I haven't learned judo (but would love to), but from what I've read, if you only still remember how to break a fall, that's something valuable you can keep for life. It might even save your life someday.

@@CornyBum I’ve been outta Judo for only 3-4 years and I’ve used my breakfalls more times than I can remember. I fall a lot and most of them likely wouldn’t have hurt me anyway but I’m always like “phew, good thing I did Judo for a few years”.

@Stefan Kovacevic it was just before the final showdown with the baddie and Old Boy. I'm talking about the original Korean version, the Hollywood one didn't have it. In case you're wondering, at this point in the film, Old Boy comes across as an invincible badass, then he tries to take on this judoka and gets his ass kicked badly.

Unbelievable to have someone like Nomura win 3 gold given how easy it is to lose. Also, crazy for Karelin to win 3 gold and 1 silver given the physical level of condition you need to be in for wrestling. Let has it right in timing (judo) vs grind(wreatling)

@@LlopmondDunderbridge I always thought the stand up was sketchy at my BJJ gyms and eventually I learned how judo drills their takedowns and the very systemic way they do it and it all made sense.

It’s great but as someone who’s been sidelined since October with a torn miniscus and stretched ligaments in my knee it’s also risky…….wish I started it in my teens as opposed to 45 though 🤣

Define "better." As far as competition goes, Judo and Sambo are much more restrictive in their ruleset than BJJ. You could argue that BJJ is the more complete art.

@@TheGunnyBadger03xx BJJ is far from a complete art, it teaches almost no throws or takedowns, but judo and sambo do. And judo also teaches basic ground work, though it doesn't go into as much depth as BJJ on the ground.

and it means The Gentle (like Gentile) Way...Yeshua was a Jew and his gentle practice/jitsu/art was Do(ing) The Way as a practice/art lifestyle much like Kano Jigoro taught so that the weak were magnified. Judo spread much like The Way and Maeda served as a Paul who spread in Brazil like Rome establishing Gracie Jiu-jitsu which would be a Catholic Church type of Judo.

Everything they said about Judo is true of wrestling when you are watching a dominant and explosive wrestler who is a master at throws. Even more impressive than Judo because there is no gi but a sweaty, near naked target instead.

the bitterness towards jj is comical, you know BJJ includes judo as well right

@@Mamluk8989 from ju jutsu, and it is just a term used to refer to every technique used, like a dictionnary. The firsts dojo opening in foreign countries called themselves judo jujutsu (in France for exemple). The Gracies called theirs Gracie Jiu jitsu, because it was the term mostly refering to judo at the time.
