Making drill bit sorting trays with 3d printing

I hate all the little boxes that drill bits, router bits, and hex bits come in. They take up a lot of space in the drawer and add an extra step when you want to grab a bit. So, I design and 3d print trays to replace them and help organize my bit drawer.

Even though I cannot 3D print, I learned two things: make the boxes in four layers and make them stackable. Great tips.

Just printed out a set of these and am very happy with the design. Thanks for the upload.

I just printed these! Excellent design and print. I have a Bambu Carbon X1 and the largest tray printed in 4 hours. (The Bambu is beyond words of how good it is.) Thank you so much for designing this! I concur with others on Thingaverse - metric labels would be good too since your system is modular.

Thank you for walking us through the interesting process of designing and printing theses drill bit trays. Separating the text inserts is a terrific idea. I am always looking for shop organisation ideas and will be using this for sure. Really good job! Cheers 👍😎🇦🇺

Letter sizes? Neat solution for me. Gonna have a buddy 3d print me a set. Give some thought to a box for Drill Tap sort box.

I don't have a printer. How much to buy all the ones you have done?

Love these trays! Would you design a set of these trays with dividers from top to bottom? How much would you charge?

Thanks! I think I would need to charge a few hundred dollars. It's very time consuming to design and test a model like this.

To make them stackable, do you simply apply the same chamfer to the bottom outer edge and upper inner edge? Or do you need to alter the dimension/angle of one of them? Trying to see how I can apply that method to other boxes

Hi Jon! I believe the chamfer on the top and the bottom are the same.

Hi love it.. Been driving me crazy all these bits. Any chance of getting the Fusion file ? I have metric and bigger drawers. Would have been nice to been able to adjust to fit my own shop. Thanks for the video. TR

@@Norwegianwoodworker Are you making a metric version? You should post it on Thingiverse! It's a common request I get, but I probably won't do it myself because I have so few metric bits.

4:12 Your extruder temp might be a bit high causing the stringing.
