Making Custom Battery Tray On The XS400

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Making a custom battery tray for the Yamaha XS400 build! This item was an important piece of the puzzle and having it done means fabrication is nearly complete on this build. I like to utilize the space under the swingarm to mount batteries for a clean look that is still relatively easy to access.
I made this tray from 11 individual pieces:
- Bottom tube is 1" diameter
- Ends are machined and tapped for M10x1.25 threads
- Vertical plate is 3/16" steel
- Bent bar is 1/4" diameter round bar
- Strap tabs and side tabs are 14G steel
- The strap is a generic Amazon battery strap

In before "But the mudghads!?" 😉 Seriously though I hope everyone enjoys these build videos. If there is one takeaway with these things it's that they don't need to be viewed as "bike specific" as the ideas can be used on anything. I often get comments asking for specific videos on specific bikes where the information is already covered in other videos I have made. Just know this information applies to nearly any bike. Happy building!

I love Rust Oleum, the primer, a big can of that, slathered on with a brush. Then some color, usually flat black or sometimes high gloss black. (and then a pint of the primer in a quart of waist oil and a quart of diesel fuel with maybe some minwax stain amazing for the outside wood finish project. The Rust Oleum primer holds it all together. No bugs on the fence. ever.). And so.... Oh yea. No rust for me. Just saying. Your student, always, Steve from New Hampshire.

Nicely done! Learning the of hand is critical. Takes time, but being able to do most processes proficiently (wrenching, welding, cutting ect) both paws will allow you to change it up enough to last thru a working life. I switched most tasks to my left about 40, I'm 60 now and have both hands good most times. Also injury will force this on most who wrench and fab. Airplanes for the $ and bikes/cars for fun! I do Enjoy the build videos!!

For small parts I use a very small drill vice to hold the parts. I drilled and tapped the body of the vice and threaded a stud into it for my work lead clamp. I also machine inserts for an almost press fit so one side does not lift up when tacking the opposite side. No tig finger hold down needed. Cool project
