Making An Anvil From Scrap I-Beam / Part 2

It's not the prettiest anvil, but all I'm going to be using it for is making tools and flattening small metal parts.

Wood works pretty good as a "support" and sound stopper. I made one of these for my son. He's very interested in what I do, and it was a nice free option. Next I'm gonna get him a harbor freight and do the plate weld. Good job brother!

Looks great. Will be fun to work on. You wont be hammering on anything to big. Railroad spikes would be about the right size to work on. There are a lot of blacksmithing channels on here and other videos to get ideas from. Can't wait to see what you do work on. Thank you for sharing.

If it were mine, at 1:00 I'd drill four holes thru the top of the 5/8", then plug weld into the beam, besides welding along the sides...eliminating any separation bending in the top of the anvil.

Personally, I'd have used sections of flat bar at 60°, to make triangular braces (the equilateral triangle being the most solid of polygons).

That is an H beam not I beam. I like it though, homemade anvils are cool

I like the idea if I can find a piece of I beam I'll do the same but I would add two more pieces of Road stock on either side I love to over engineer things

What do you do if you need a horn on it?

So far I haven't needed a horn for what I'm doing. But I think I would try improvising one out of 2 railroad spikes welded side by side and ground down to a point at the end.

Certainly a decent upgrade, but even with the support bars there'll be quite some vibration. An old sledgehammer head would perform better for example.
