The "KLANG" sound at the very beginning makes my day! Like an half liter black coffee in the morning on an empty stomach! Hell yeah!
my favorite part is when you measured the ID of the hole with the OD part of the caliper

Great work! Always enjoy your videos. Looking forward to seeing you use the striking anvil in future videos.

So what is different about a "striking" anvil and why do you need one?
@stxrynn
2 жыл бұрын
@@carpediemarts705 It's an anvil saver. When using a sledge hammer to do heavy work, if you miss, the striking anvil takes the hit, not the expensive, hardened anvil facel. Also is a bit lower so the striker can get some power into the swing. The striker being a human power hammer.... Or rat powered if this is a documentary: kzread.info/dash/bejne/anur1tuYqZWwZ5s.html
Keep going, dude. Your works inspires.

That's amazing again Paul really enjoyed this video as well wow 😃😃😃
We like to see thinks being made machined things are best and this is a really nice tool taking shape here. This is nice a plate small in overall size (meaning not a whole dedicated table but something our small shop could use to beat on with sturdy results this is giving us a few ideas that might adapt well for our shop and future. Thank you for this share we are new and we subscribed to continue learning more much more (and applying it too). Lance & Patrick.

I did the same thing on a chunk of inch and a half. Drilled a 1 inch hole and used a triangle file to make it square. Wish I had a mill.

Can you forge on it? Yes. And that's all you need. If you need a horn, make one that'll go into the hardy hole. A simple round bar forged to a point is all you need. (Or you could have it turned on a lathe if you don't like forging stuff for some strange reason). Well done.
Grt build !!! Keep up

Looking at building one of these, mostly for drifting or hardy tools, and not necessarily really heavy striking.. Would 1" thick be sufficient?

Simple anvil...great 👍

I'm an amateur machinist and welder but was wondering? 1: layout of the hole. If 1.000 D then put it straight in the mill, find the center of the hole and x:0,y:0 then corner is x: 0.500,y: 0.500 , etc - the radius of the drill bit and no center punch needed if you start the hole with a center drill. 2: why not use a radius end mill on the corners instead of a grinder? 3: when it's still in the mill why not fly cut the top? 4: loved that you hand filed but if you invest in a dyna file you will not regret it. There are knockoffs that are cheap but the dynabrade cannot be beat. It is for sure a buy once cry once tool. C: I wanted to see a ball bearing bounce. A good anvil needs good rebound. Also what were the materials? I'm guessing the legs and feet are mild but maybe m3 or h11 for the big chunk? Keep building. It's becoming a lost art.

1 the piece of steel already had a hole in it when I bought it so I couldn’t really start from a center point and for this application the hole didn’t have to be that exact 2 I don’t have a radius end mill 3 it doesn’t matter 4 I don’t have one lol 5 people make striking anvils out of mild steel all the time because it’s just going to get beat up anyway and it’s a lot safer because if a striker misses and hits the edge it won’t chip off and turn into a projectile like a hardened anvil would
Very nice work. I use a piece of A36 like that, but I have not put a hole in it or have a stand for it yet. Thanks for the idea!

Nice one Paul 👍 I'd probly use sand to fill the legs tho. An overnight soak in vinegar and the mill scale will come off with a bit of coarse steel wool or a wire wheel

Cool build but the cement scene was the star. I can’t believe you didn’t spill any pouring from that 5gal bucket. And did you mix it with half an 8 iron??
Hi Paul, love your videos, what brand of drill bits do you recommend? I'm a auto tech and I am looking for a good set of drill bits. Thanks! and keep up the good work.

Hey! Thank you. I use a cheep set of Milwaukee bits from Home Depot when I use a hand drill or I just need to drill a quick hole on the drill press but when I need to be precise I have a set of jobbers length bits from mcmaster Carr and they’re really good
That's quite a bit bigger than what I have to make one. Mine is going to be 2x6" I'm hoping to have a video out on that soon.
Well done

How has the grout held up?
Have seen a number of videos making these things and always wonder why they don't simply make and use a broach as opposed to using a file.A broach is one of the simplest tools to make and can be used over and over again!

Great job Paul what angle did you cut your legs at and are you happy about the end result or would you change angle. I second the soak in vinegar to remove Mill scale. And I can tell you it doesn't matter how big your shop is it's never big enough. Thanks again keep them coming

Greetings from Greece. What type of style do you use to make the upper part?
@PaulPinto

I just used mild steel but you could definitely use some sort of tool steel if you want
You gave me good idea for anvil. It may be way cheaper make one like you than buy one since they are expensive theese days. In my country even 100 lb abused ones don't go below 100$.
Why grout the legs? Damping perhaps? Fully cured grout has similar elastic properties (but not the strength) to steel. I can't imagine much energy loss between their interface. I submit two bays trianglating the legs will have several times the effect of grouting provided the assembly is securely bolted to a solid floor.

It’s just to make the whole thing a bit heavier. The heavier you can get the anvil, the better.
Where did you get the steel for the anvil itself?
@PaulPinto
5 жыл бұрын
At a local steel supplier but you could probably find something online
WHERE can i find a chunk of steel like that?
Looks good, these came up in conversation on the Blacksmiths Pub podcast last week I think. They didnt really understand the need for a striking anvil. They said why dont you just use your regular anvil? What are your thoughts?
@PaulPinto
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’ve never actually used one and this one is for a customer but I definitely see how they make sense because you can make the stand a lot lower which makes striking much easier and you risk damaging a real anvil if you are working with an inexperienced striker. I wouldn’t want to spend a bunch of money on a real anvil and put it on a stand that’s too short for regular use
Just subscribed. Was the striking surface high carbon or mild steel? The sparks seem like mild steel.
What did you use to make that anvil?
Top
Hey I like that stencil of the USA on the wall. I would buy something like that.
What alloy steel is that ?
You didn't harden and then temper it?
What is the name of the tool that is used to burr out the steel to make it sqaure?
What type of Steel is the deck made of?
@PaulPinto

Just mild steel
Ild radius the corners of that bottom plate so you don't slam your thighs into them lol but man ace job. And wow your vice is immense
What kind of steel is the striking anvil? Love the project.
@melgross

Jeff Strauser I use 4340, sometimes 4140. That’s chrome moly. These are particularly good for striking, as they work harden. They’re very tough. Standard A 36, which you find more cheaply, deforms. After a while, it’s all banged up, and needs a good grinding or milling to fix. If that doesn’t bother you, then fine. But I use this for sheet metal too, and a flat maintained surface is very important for that.
@jeffstrauser941

@@melgross that's why I wanted to know I've been using a regular anvil to make armor and it's not as flat as I would like.

nice
Where the heck do you just get a big ol thick slab of metal?

When drilling a hole try using candle wax. You will find it is quite a bit less messy to say the least. Nice job fella.

"Try using candle wax?" Under what circumstances would candle wax drill through steel?
@victoryfirst2878
5 жыл бұрын
@@v3124 What one does is take a candle and just touch the revolving drill and just start drilling. Then every so often retouch the drill. So easy to clean up the surrounding area from the swarf. Instead of oil flying all around the place. Works for me and should work for you too.
What grade of steel is that
You should use a surface conditioning disk on your grinder
