Making a Tie Dye Leather Wallet
In 2010 I figured out a way to get a tie dye effect on leather, so we decided to make a tie dye leather wallet by hand. The tie dye effect is made by floating leather dyes in water without mixing, so that when you dip the leather into the dyes a tie dye effect is achieved.
On top of the tie dyed leather, we used presses to die cut our wallet pieces for this wallet. Die cutting is a good way to make lots of pieces in a super accurate and fast way when you need to produce lots of things all at the same time. We die cut some of our stock leather products, and that allows us to hand sew and hand finish the piees while keeping the cost down to customers. Weaver's presses make that very efficient, as we do not need to buy expensive hydraulic presses or use any electricity. They also have very low maintenance, which means a lot more work time and a lot less down time waiting for things to be fixed!

Very cool dye technique! Thanks for showing! I've been watching lots of dye videos and its hilarious how few crafters wear gloves when dying 🤣 I'm guilty

I would love a step by step of this dye process since I have tried it several times to only get spots of dye onto the leather.

Did you ever figure this out? I've gone through 3 bottles of dye and can only get spotted, splotchy results. I tried hot water, soapy water, added salt. No dice

@@PickledAmericano I did figure it out. First you have to use an alcohol based stain. Then there is a mix ratio sweet spot. Shallow pan , small amount of water. But really I didn’t like the result as the color leached off the leather for days.

Wow, this video made me remember a multi colored wallet I had in the 1970s, it wasn't terribly well stitched but the leather colors and embossing were beautiful. It was evidently made in another country. I bought it either at a headshot or one of all these small craft and import shops that used to exist back then. The late sixties and parts of the seventies eras where people valued hand made items. Thank you for inspiring me to revisit really pleasant memories from my hippish teen years. Good times. ✌️☮️

I know nothing about leatherwork and there is no explanation of how, this effect is created. My assumption is the dyes are oil based and then poured into pan of water????? Very cool look. I've never seen leather look like this.
