Making a Leather Zipper Wallet by Hand
I love making zipper wallets our of leather, especially by hand. This leather zipper wallet is handmade using natural vegetable tanned leather, with a brass RiRi zipper and Vinymo threads from Japan. It's very easy to hand sew a zipper into leather using basting tape, though make sure to get a thin cut tape so you don't have to cut the roll in half like I did with this roll!
The natural vegetable tanned leather was tanned outside then treated with a bee's wax and neatsfoot cream, then burnished to a shine by hand. The wallet was hand stitched with a saddle stitch, and burnished natural edges were brought to a shine with pure local bee's wax. It's important when you're sewing a zipper into leather to allow enough of a tolerance to sew the zipper tape on the sides of the opening for the zipper in the leather, so make sure not to cut your opening too wide!

One of the very first things I did starting out was to make a coin wallet. THIS is nothing like that! So well crafted. And the plate was brilliant! 😁

I thought it was so funny that you used a plate. I do the same thing for scallops on chaps. I used to cut my double sided tape down the middle too to make it narrower but I found a big roll of 1/4" at Wawak. Order that you will love it. Thanks for the great video!!

I think using random kitchenware has become an integral part of my process :) I hear you on the tape - ordered the wrong size accidentally and been trying to work through it, I have a roll of proper 1/4" tape ready to go when it's done!
If I want to do this with Louis Vuitton canvas/ material, would it require a leather lining or something

When you are building wallets what is the weight of most of them and what range would you recommend? I am practicing with the thread that came with the kit and scraps from a friend and a 5-6oz vegetable tan from Michael's.

give them a try! They're really quite simple if you use basting tape and take your time :)

just something different, yall see us glue every video :) it holds just as well for stitching and is a bit more tidy and predictable for installing zipper tape, it's just not a structural solution if you're looking to go stitch-free on something like a watch band. Really good for piping though!

Judging by the color I'd say they're using veg tan leather from Hermann Oak. How do I know that, you may ask? Well, Weaver Leather sponsors them in their worthy endeavor and Weaver sells Herman Oak leather, a premium leather and their leather looks pretty primo.

yep! it's just a bit easier for holding zipper tape, as the tape tends to soak up glue in unpredictable ways and stain beyond the seam. You can absolutely glue it if you want, i've done it many times - but I find gluing to be faster, easier, and way more tidy than glue when it comes to zippers :)
