Making a small balsa crankbait.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have always loved trout fishing, so it was really only a matter of time before I made these small balsa wood crankbaits. What better way to celebrate these beautiful fish than to make these little brown trout, rainbow trout, and brook trout fishing lures! I think these will be just perfect for catching trout in lakes and slower moving rivers. Join me for another handmade wooden fishing lure build!

    Awesome! I've been a fly fisher for over 55 years, and have tied my own flies since the late 70's. Trust me... I'm not old LOL. Your channel is one of the few bait builders I've subscribed to. My intent is to use materials like balsa and foams to make crank style baits I can use with a fly rod. Ummm... no, I'm not using treble hooks; most likely a single hook on the tail. Great channel, glad I stumbled upon it.

  • @zimmtex

    @zimmtex

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question; you can use any kind of wood you want. Different species have qualities that are better suited for particular lures. Balsa is commonly used because it is easy to carve and very buoyant. I mostly use poplar because it is durable, easy to carve, reasonably buoyant and readily available. A good all around wood to start with might be basswood. Thanks for watching!

  • @zimmtex

    @zimmtex

    Baking soda is used as a filler. When you put cyanoarcylate (superglue) on it and let it harden, you can sand and shape it. Unlike putty, it is much harder and more waterproof.

    I'm confused on lip styles. Can you tell me why there are so many different designs?

  • @zimmtex

    @zimmtex

    3 жыл бұрын

    This is a very good question and I will try to go a little bit more in depth on future videos. In a nutshell, a lip is just a control surface that water flows over. When water spills over the sides, the size and shape of the lip affects the lure in different ways. A wide lip has a wide wobble because as water spills off of one side, it has a farther distance to travel to spill off the other side. Length generally controls the depth of the dive, but the longer the lip, the more horizontal the angle needs to be to maintain stability.
