Nice vid. I see videos on YT advocating the use of squares, bits of card stuck to bases and so on that you have to look along to try and 'eye in' an angle but as you show in this video, having an actual physical connection is the only real way to be as accurate as possible (without the use of a pillar drill or whatever). Remember, what you have shown here doesn't have to be 90 degrees in both directions; if something has to be at an angle one way or another - or both - they can also be done accurately in the same manner with the correct angle measuring tools to make the jig (because that's essentially what it is - a jig...and I'm all for jigs!). As a carpenter, I regularly eye in things to make sure they look correct in their surroundings but as a joiner, that isn't good enough - it needs that extra measured precision.

I have tried squares in the past and was never happy with the results. You are 100% correct that a jig or guide like this can be used for more than 90 degrees and could be used for any angle, even compound angles.

@@AussieWoodshed I totally agree and have done it innumerable times over the years. Yes, it takes a little longer than guess-work but the result is well worth that few minutes extra.

Do you think this, or something similar, would work with a bit brace? Thats all i use and its a bit of a bastard trying to keep it square 😅 cheers, great vid as always

Yes, it should work fine for a brace and bit, as long as it can be held to stop it moving. However you may want it to be a bit higher to allow for better alignment with the bit.

As @AussieWoodshed says, driving a bit and brace is always going to be tentative, to say the least. Holding them absolutely still while spinning them is not easy, even for the best of us (which I am not). Watch any reputable KZreadr (Paul Sellers, for example) using a brace and bit and you will see the bit wobbling slightly as they start - however, the hole comes out pretty damn good, if not perfect, in the end. The deeper the jig/guide, the more contact surface and the better the chance of getting it accurate.
