Sensational mate, super useful. I was sent the accuburr ages ago and it's been sitting in a drawer waiting to be sharpened. Now I can 😊

Thanks, I've wanted to see how well the accuburr works for a while, but can't justify the cost. Card scrapers or scrapers in general are great fun to use.

Nice one Luke, great info. I need to get away from relying on jigs to sharpen - I find it _really_ hard to hold a consistent angle freehand for chisels - so maybe keeping the card scraper at 90 degrees might be easier for me, and could even give me a confidence boost so I can go ruin my chisels again 😆 👍

Thanks, the 90 degree sharpening is definitely easier to hold than a bevel angle and for everything else 'practice makes perfect', eventually. I struggled to freehand sharpen when i first started and it took a few years of interchanging my sharpening with a jig until one day i found i didn't reach for the jig as much. Nothing wrong using a sharpening jig if it gets the tools sharp, they are also good to correct free hand sharpening while learning so you don't 'ruin' a chisel. I still use my sharpening jig to re-square my blade edges, free hand is never perfect.

I use the same technique up until burnishing where I do about 5 stokes on each side first. Then clamp in the vice and turn the bur down. I find burnishing the sides first gives a longer lasting, sharper bur. When worn, can also repeat the process a few times before having to go back to the diamond stone step. Also I just use a gouge as the burnisher. Thanks for posting the well explained technique!

I've always had trouble turning the burr. Not sure if it is my technique, or the quality of the scraper. Now, I know, it's me.

Don't be too tough on yourself, i found it difficult to get right the first few times i tried to form a burr on a card scraper. I find the biggest issue most people have is putting too much pressure on the burnisher when forming the burr, which is what i did myself.
