Making a Practice Rail (P-Rail) Box For Aggressive Inline Skating

Музыка

Staying home but need to practice. Here's a quick and easy P-rail box to make. I made a few mistakes along the way so watch along and learn how to do it right.
Project Time - approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on equipment and skill level
Project Difficulty - easy
If you want a good starter power tool set that has everything you need for this and lots of other projects, this is the one I use: amzn.to/3a4ZFUW
Material
• Dimensional Lumber (use metric equivalents if needed in your location)
○ One (1) 2" x 10", minimum 10ft
○ Two (2) 2" x 6", minimum 10 ft
○ One (1) 2" x 4", 8ft long should be sufficient for 6 cross braces
• Two (2) 2" Internal Diameter PVC pipes; min 10ft long
○ Alternatively you can change one pipe out for a a 1.5" Internal Diameter to make soul grinds a little easier
• 1lb box of 3 1/2" deck screws, Philips Head
○ You can use Torx/star head screws but you will need a long shank Torx/star driver bit and/or hand tool to drive them home (see discussion in the video)
Equipment
• Safety Equipment for working with power tools
○ Hearing protection
○ Eye protection
○ Any other protection you feel necessary - stay safe, it's not worth cutting corners and getting injured
• Wood saw
○ Hand saw is OK but a power saw like a circular saw will make it quicker
• Drill with drill bits for making holes and driver bits for driving the screws
○ Alternatively adding an impact driver will make driving the deck screws faster and easier without needing a pilot hole
• Measurement and marking Equipment
○ Tape Measure
○ Pencil
○ Straight edge/square (although you can eyeball it as the cuts aren't long or need to be super accurate)

Thanks to Travis at Blader Union (bladerunion.com) for showing his version of this and the folks on the Back to Blading Slack (backtoblading.slack.com) for the encouragement.

Built the same rail using Travis's plans, made the 2x4's a little wider and lowered them down from flush in the 2x6's to give a slightly taller rail to deck height. Good video, keep it up!

this is almost exactly the design i used for mine, i'd recommend 1.5" instead of 2" though, better locks, less falls.

Thanks. Looking through my Home Depot receipts the materials were about US$50 when I made this 4 years ago. Could be more now although when I built this lumber prices had gone up a bit too because of the pandemic. It also has wheels now to make it easier and they were about another $30. amzn.to/3UkoaX2

You can get a drill bit extender so you don’t have to use a screw driver mate.

  • @CoreyGibson43

    @CoreyGibson43

    2 жыл бұрын

The extension I had still didn't fit through the hole because it's was a bit holder type. That would have required me to make bigger access holes. The good news is I have have long shank bits now because installing a curtain rail forced me to but them. I'll use them when I change one side to 1.5 inch tube. 😁

I've been kind of bad and not used it much as my focus was drawn away from aggressive to train for Northshore Inline Marathon. That focus will change next year since I am done with my marathon skating career. I did add some casters to make it easier to move this year too.

are the 2 inch thick woods actually 1.5in?

  • @CoreyGibson43

    @CoreyGibson43

    4 жыл бұрын

Yes, about 1.5". I remember in Australia when you went out to get 2 x 4 studs they actually were typically 90mm x 35mm but you could also get 90mm x 45mm just to add to the confusion. Dimensional lumber is odd.

What kind of magic PVC is that? All my PVC pipes that ive used for p-rails have broken on the first day....

It's the standard 2" internal diameter white one that Home Depot sells and most people use. You've gotta support it right though or it will break.
