Making a Post Vise & Swage Block Stand
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
It seems Mr. Skully was at it again while I was away from the Ship Shop and ripped our faithful post vise off the wall. Seeing as we acquired a beautiful old swage block, it was time to make a proper stand for both. Yar, and all that.

I dig this! Lots of problem solving with a useful rig at the end. I’m wondering if it may move a little too much depending on the job. Such a cool use of those tongs and I totally get the cool of finding those markings 🤘🏽 Everyone likes the old quality stuff but those are usually well used. How often do you think a perfect surface matters when it comes to anvils, swage blocks, etc?
@skullandspade
3 жыл бұрын
I’m going to be putting some bolt sleeves in the concrete for when I need to do heavier work, just didn’t get around to it here. As far as the perfect surfaces: I’m a fan of getting the job done however you can. Flat/square surfaces are of course nice, but usually come at a hefty price. If you’re not able to find a flat/square surface (anvil, swage, etc) remember that a thick piece of mild steel will work pretty darn well (but will deteriorate faster) if you’ve got the steel hot enough. It has a lot to do with what your goal is. Small work requires a lot less surface area for working, but if you’re planning on making big/dead flat/square, consider affordable options for finishing. It’s typical for folks to think “I can’t do it without a specific thing/tool.” Learning how to use your skills and the tools on hand will only make you a better problem solver.
Another great video. A clever solution to the problem. I only wish you'd put a little more lighting on your beauty shots. Something level with the sides rather than all top lighting. I do understand the general aesthetic that I believe is your style, but in my opinion, it's a little too dark in the end. Just some constructive criticism. Have a great day.
@skullandspade
3 жыл бұрын
I will always appreciate constructive criticism. I am at the whim of of shop lights/camera, but I’ll be more mindful of it on these darker projecta
Form meets function. I really like it. How does it perform? Does the vise wobble or move around?
@skullandspade
3 жыл бұрын
For light work on the vise, not at all. I will be adding some bolt sleeves in the floor, and holes in the front plate for when I really need to rock on it
When a post vice doesn't have a cool stand like that, do you normally just pound it into the dirt or something? Great video as always!
