I found these bonnets on eBay and I knew straight away that they would make great content as well as being lucky enough that they go with the body I’m restoring.
The body,chassis,bulkhead,inner wings, bonnets and cowl will all be up for sale once complete and will find my next KZread project
Thanks for watching 👍

    Tom, great job as always. Just noticed from another comment you have mentioned Jenolite rust converter. If you can, get hold of some Fertan. It is by far the best rust converter I have ever come across. Once you have tried it you will not use anything else. A professional restorer with about 30 years experience told me about it, and it really is superb.

    Why didn't you remove the bonnet catches before starting ... presumably you'll have to go back later to blast and clean up the areas under them .... seems like an extra job? .... enjoyed the video, bonnet sides look good now

  • @Metal_shaper_tom

    @Metal_shaper_tom

    That’s a Good point but the main aim was to see how good the bonnet are for the video purposes . I do mention they will need a additional clean before paint but in hindsight it an extra 5 minutes to take them off would of been worthwhile 👍

    @@Metal_shaper_tom indeed .... not a criticism ... making the vids is different from what you might do just working away in your workshop .... just finished a resto on a crossflow 4 seater ... wish I'd had these vids to refer to a couple of years ago ... would have been reassuring and saved me some time! 😄

    If I'd have taken them off at that point they'd end up "in a box somewhere" and many years later it would have taken me days to find them again... :)

    Hi Tom Great video's For rust removal have you tried DEOX by a company called "Bilt Hamber" (their in the uk) it's really excellent, best I ever used. You can get it either as a thick paste for vertical and in situ surfaces or as crystals which you dilute in water and suspend the item in for about six hours, depending on degree of rust. Then a quick wire brush off and the metal looks brand new. Its an amazing product.

    Crikey Tom - when you unwrapped those, I thought they were going to be scrap / used as templates, but they look remarkable now that you’ve worked your magic on them! Will they need a light skim of filler, or just an epoxy base coat and a heavy primer/filler to finish them before paint? Thanks for sharing as always 👍

  • @Metal_shaper_tom

    @Metal_shaper_tom

    Hi Ian I’d probably say they would need a light skim but on the whole there pretty good. They would have to be pretty bad to not be able to save them. When I first seen the advert I knew they were worth a gamble .👍

    Hmmm. Very interesting. Could you explain the difference between a hammer blow and a slapper blow please? I realise how that question sounds (haha), but I'm asking seriously. I mean, given that all the tool surfaces are very slightly convex, the hammer makes a single point contact and so does the slapper, and both would tend to expand the metal because it's becoming thinner, so why use one over the other? Regards Mark in the UK

  • @Metal_shaper_tom

    @Metal_shaper_tom

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi mark I’ll give it a go in simple terms. Like you said the hammer blow is very precise and focuses on I small area and I would use this for when I wanted to dress a exact area. The slapper has a much larger striking face and when I strike the panel it more of a glancing blow than a direct strike . The aim is to move the metal the metal subtly without stretching it . This is just a rough explanation as you can use both tools in many different ways but then this comes down to experience and technique and tool surfaces. Hope this helps a little

    @@Metal_shaper_tom With the hammer are you hitting "the high spot" and everywhere round it is supported by the dolly behind - where with the slapper the dolly presses behind on "the low spot" and the slapper presses down on the wide area that surrounds it?

    Hey joe . I’ll probably attack the pitted areas with a few different types of wire wheels and any really stubborn areas I’ll use a jenolite rust converter on. A bit longer in the sandblasted would of helped too! 👍

    Thanks for the info. I always cringe when I see someone using a media blaster on body panels but you must have a light touch. :) As I'm not doing production work and have a lot of time.. I try to use a 10% solution of molasses and water and dip the panel. It's slow but very thorough. Plus it's not caustic so it won't attack good metal, doesn't require neutralizing and is not bad for the environment like most acids. However.. a good dose of phosphoric acid works wonders too. ;) I'm not familiar with Jenolite Rust Converter. It contains methyl hippuric acid. I'll have a look at that and give some a try. Cheers.
