You know how when you pull on a rubber band and let it go, it doesn't just fall? It has a spring to it? It also becomes longer and thinner, right? You pulling on the elastic causes an internal force to form within the band. This force is released when you let go of the band or when the band snaps. When they tighten the strings, they're adding tension. The tension withen the string, it's enough to hold up the table.

Tension physics is relatively tricky as well. At least when on a scale where you’re trying to hold up a lot more weight. But still something like this can still be a bit of a challenge especially when dealing with the twisting force as well when only having basically a single line in the center supporting the weight of the top. A cool redesign of this would be to have multiple little stems jutting out from the bottom and “hovering” between each other, allowing for more support for the weight and by spreading the load out further it would also keep it more balance and less wobbly right off the bat. Another thing they could have done was design it in a way that the support lines ran to help keep it from twisting could have been placed so that they ran right across another line, and could have used like an X connector to almost tie those 2 separate lines together, so that when it wants to twist, the tension of the anti twisting lines helps, but those also pull on another line to help keep it rigid as well. There’s so many cool things you could do with this to improve it but for the basic design they were after and for not spending a ton of time trying to design it to be perfect and doing a bunch of trial and error, this is very well done
I love E&K because their background fields of engineering and design come together so beautifully because they’re so in sync with each other.

A good way to know if the strings are in the same tension is to make them vibrate like a string instrument. The lines will be in tune with each other if they have the same tension. Keep in mind the vertical lines will sound different than the diagonal lines.

Ooh I like this! Although it would only work if the lines were also *exactly* the same length to begin with... I imagine they ended up with a slight tension differentiation to compensate for the slight length differentiation they got when cutting the lines
@canadianchemist5052
2 жыл бұрын
@@cameronmueller-harder3916 why would the length of the string matter? wouldn’t the pitch only depend on the distance between the two ends of the string if they’re all the same tension?
@cameronmueller-harder3916
2 жыл бұрын
@@canadianchemist5052 That's a very good point, it's not at all intuitive! Here's a way of thinking about it that makes it a little bit more intuitive: Picture you have two elastics that are super super stretchy. One is 11 inches long, and one is 1 inch long. If you stretch them both to exactly a foot long, the 11 inch one is going to make a relatively medium pitch noise, but the 1 inch long string is going to make a *much* higher pitch noise! (*wistful sigh* don't you just love logical extremes?) Obviously their strings are much closer in length than 11 inches vs 1 inch, but if two are about a half inch different (one was a quarter inch too short and one was a quarter inch too long, say), they could totally make noticeably different pitches!
@cameronmueller-harder3916
2 жыл бұрын
Oh wait I think I misunderstood your argument, sorry! This is definitely super counterintuitive, and I have no way of making it more intuitive... if two strings are the same tension, it actually doesn't matter how long they are at all! An inch long string stretched to 2 inches will make exactly the same pitch as a 10 inch string stretched to 20 inches. This feels super wrong, but it's totally true (as long as the strings are completely identical in every other way)! This is why tensioning the strings using pitch won't work... because if their strings start as different lengths then they actually don't *want* them to be the same tension! Again, let's take it to the logical extreme. Let's say their strings are supposed to be 12 inches long, and one they accidentally cut to be 10 inches and one to 14 inches, oops! They decide to use them anyway, and tension them using pitch. If they make them the same tension, then one leg of the table will suddenly be 10 inches tall, and one would be 14 inches tall! This is why they tensioned them the way they did. This way they were able to counteract any small differences in length. In this example extreme case, it would mean tightening the 14 inch string a whole lot. That would then mean the 10 inch one and the 14 inch one could be in equilibrium with each other (although probably not, given how big of a difference that would be), but they would be at very different tensions, meaning very different pitches!
I spent 27 minutes just watching in complete awe. You 2 are aesthetically and intellectually far beyond the KZread DIY channel standard. You guys are just magical beings.

Some ideas I had : You could make the wires that go from the corners go diagonally to their opposite corners - that would mean they would all cross in the center which IMO would make it look even more impossible. To prevent wires from rubbing against each other you can offset them slightly so they don't exactly touch. To make it more stable I think you could put a weight on like you did when testing so the wires give a little and then tighten the tension rods while the weight is on. When the weight is removed again it should now be super tight and more stable.
@WJS774
2 жыл бұрын
That wouldn't work though. The whole point of the wires around the edge is that they stop the tabletop from tipping over. If they go through the middle then they won't be doing that.

@@meloD30 yes if you used something else with higher tensile strength. Fishing line will actually stretch and become more brittle at the higher weights for which it is rated at. I think some chain links could be used to make some cool floating stools (although I haven't made a tension table in a decade and a half at least). The challenge there is that you can't make the same micro adjustments with links of chain that you can with fishing and the stability depends upon the tensile forces exerting equally and exactly..... so theoretically yes, but not I nor anyone I know personally has proven the concept lol

Evan, you are so me when I'm curious about something!!!
impressed on the rigidity , i guess you got that by anchoring each corner both sides and vertical, and you guys are so funny , what a nice pair of creative nutters you are

These are the most adorable people on KZread. Period.
That is too cool Buckminster Fuller would be proud!
The KZread algorithm finally recommended something amazing. A few years ago as I was just looking at KZread, trying to find a halfway decent video. I clicked on this video and made one of the best (entertainment related) choices of my life. I saw this video again today and I just wanted to say THANK YOU for making such amazing content that has kept me entertained for hours. I love all your videos so much!!! Especially your videos for joobie. Thank you!
Dropped everything for this. I’ll continue cleaning after. It can wait.

Can we all appreciate together, Evan and Katelyn's uniform house trend of light washed rainbow colors?! Think how many other decor projects have a similar color schemes for their house*-*
Fantastic. Also I enjoyed this far more than the supurrvisor 😂😂😂
should try to use leds to see if the fiber will act like a fiber optic and illuminate while on the table

I got intense flashbacks to Evan falling through the ceiling when he was testing the strength of the wire with his own weight
Cat ignoring table IS providing approval 👌
Rewatching this video because I love these tables and everything yall make is worth watching
Katelyn: *literally having a mental breakdown because of Evan, fearing the worst case scenario* Evan: There's this great place to build websites!!! 😂😂
I wish I had the skills to make something like that.

durpface880 doggylover i think they meant to say “they” not then. And they’re referring to the top and bottom pieces of the table
I love how Katelyn always looks in pain when something's about to drop and Evan just laughs.
Fantastic build. Loved every moment of the construction. I bet Mr. Supervisor would want to use it as a pedestal bed. But just make sure that he doesn't use it as a scratching post. 😃
I don't know why but I was surprised that you guys don't just own a force gauge! (I know I'm 2 years late, let me shout into the ether)

I like your energy guys!!! Who cares about the table with so much fun you both have, thanks for sharing with us. table's a bonus... a nice one. Nice idea!
I’ve always wondered how to make one of these since I saw someone make one so strong that held themselves! You should try making one with resin! Somehow.. I don’t know how but that would be swell.

So maybe someone else pointed this out already, what makes your design your design infinitely better are the diagonals. Without only vertical tensioning elements you have nothing to prevent it from twisting around the vertical axis. Really really nice design for tensioning under the table, well done guys :)
I guess I know what I'm doing this weekend! 😀 My daughters will love this.
