How to blacken steel (hot oxide):
A mixture of caustic soda (700g), potasium saltpeter (250g) and water (1,2 l)
The temperature of the solution should be kept between 120 - 140 C.
I keep the knife inside for about 30 minutes to get consistent black colour, you can manipulate the time to achieve different results, shorter period should give you dark brown or purple - ish colour.
Be careful - this mixture is highly corrosive!
Heat treatment:
-Austenizing temperature: 830 C
-Tempering: 180 C
Specs:
Vandal
Steel: 80CrV2
Blade thickness: 5 mm / 0.197"
Length: 370 mm / 14.567"
Blade width: 60 mm / 2.362"
Blade length: 220 mm / 8.661"

    is there a reason, why you heat treat before pre grinding the bevels ? i find, that it saves a lot of belts, if you roughgrind them while the steel is soft

  • @BarbershopCustoms

    @BarbershopCustoms

    3 жыл бұрын

    The reason is you only do the job once, I don't care about belts, they last long enough :)

  • @FBPrepping

    @FBPrepping

    2 жыл бұрын

    I was going to ask that too. It doesn´t make too much sense to work on a previously hardened piece...until I realized the amount of grinding is minimal. With that jet cutter machine there is very little material to remove....anyway what do I know? I´m just a metallurgist.

    Definitely the best way to cut out a knife. I have a friend with a plasma cutter but I hate asking. I love big knifes. I’ve made a few out of scrap but I hate all the grinding. It leaves steel dust everywhere. I’ll just watch you. Your are so much better anyway. What a gorgeous knife.

    O kur... No powiem Panu, Panie dzieju, przeszedłeś samego siebie. 🥰🥰😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😁👍Cudo!!! Piękny!!! Cud, miód i orzeszki!!! 🤗😍🥰👍😁 Rób to dalej błagam, bo robisz Pan zacnie, Panie docencie. 😁😉 A jeszcze dwie sprawy po pierwsze ZRÓB NESSMUKA!!! 😡, a po drugie (😄) od pewnego czasu prowadzę kanał o tematyce; noże, bushcraft, survival itd. I chętnie przytulił bym (tę 😉 albo inną) jakąś zacność od Ciebie. Czy byłaby możliwość na przykład dostania kosy do testów? 😉😁😁 Zdrówka, pozdrówuwuje, spełniaj się kolego. 😁😁😄👍

    Dzięki, na nessmuka na pewno przyjdzie czas. Co do testów to na tę chwilę niestety nie mamy przewidzianych noży na testy, wszystko idzie na sprzedaż
