Beautiful Tuna knife and all the knives in the display case are stunning, truly artisan work. I hope there are young people to carry on the tradition of hand forging, sharpening and finishing. Great respect to the crafts people at the knife making works.

Very soft iron, because it is impossible to call it steel - it is VERY easy to engrave. The whole secret of their sharpness is that they almost do not touch the cutting board - they do not dull the edge of the knife on the board
I liked that senior guys breathing technique. Was he suffering of high blood pressure. He perfected it. Anyways beautiful hand made knives.

theres a resurgence in knifemaking/blacksmithing but its hard when your barely able to scrape a living. I've been pursuing knifemaking and forging since i was 18 and got serious into trying to turn it into a career when i turned 20.... im lucky if I've made a couple k out of it where I've spent 10s of thousands in equipment and materials. sadly most would rather buy a cheap chinese knife then drop big amounts on a handmade one

at his very aging man , his very good and master of making such thing .

Its good to see he is wearing hearing protection, He'd be deaf as hell right now!!!

I was thinking "why doesn't he just use the forge to hear up for the quench" then I remembered tuna blade lol

Unfortunately after 65 years in a forge unprotected it's probably the smoke and forge-dust affecting his lungs.

What a legend, shame his lungs have paid the price, gasping for air like a Tuna, love his skills just reminds me of my Pop who worked in the dust as a boiler maker taken too soon with emphysema.
The accumulated metal behind the whetstone tells the story of countless knifes made there.
engraving the name with a punch is insane, mans got it going hard
any idea what the blade steel is? it appears to be pretty mild. fascinating process for quenching with clay and high carbon finish. the clay could be shaped to provide a real hamon.

I've never seen working a steel after quenching. These have to be some seriously though knives.
@SpAgHeTtIssAuCe
its a ni-mai knife, which means steel stuck onto some softer iron or steel that doesn't get hardened during the quench which allows for some working
This beautiful knife must have been made with high carbon steel cutting edge but large swath of low carbon back, since it is worked cold both during the shape forging and even after the tempering process. It's meant to cut tuna, not taken to battlefield. Grandpa is definitely a fine craftsman, amazing and strong, though working in a forge without proper mask protection (especially with coal and during the grinding process) might have led to some lung damage, safety always first
