Making A Handmade Leather Wallet

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This week, I made a leather wallet. It's the first one I do like this, and I made a few mistakes in the order of the steps, but in the end, I think it turned out pretty well.
I used 6 and 3oz vegetable tanned leather. The "Smith" was laser engraved at my local maker space, but unfortunately, I lost the footage when my old camera died.
I hope you'll like the video.

    Beautiful wallet and video. Really enjoyed watching that. I was watching for the order of steps. I've been working on a leather project, but I'm not feeling really confident. I always feel like I do things out of order.

  • @RedSmith

    @RedSmith

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Bruce. Don't worry about the steps. At least, not too much. For this wallet, I was a bit in a hurry, and went to quickly from on step to another, skipping one in the process (punching holes before gluying etc...) but you can always fix it. Leather is quite forgiving, and you can always unglue or unsew something and fix the mistake. I would love to see what you're doing, so when you're done, please send me a picture :)

    The Redsmith I think I have the most trouble with burnishing. But I think part of it comes from not gluing the edges properly. Then, there seems to be a gap in the seam & it bothers me I’ll be posting the video on my KZread channel once I’m done with it. Any pointers are definitely welcome.

  • @RedSmith

    @RedSmith

    Maybe it's the glue you're using. When I glue the edge, I make sure there is little bit more glue than needed. Then I apply a regular pressure with a steel roller all along the edge. When the glue is dry, I use a nail files to roughen the edge before applying the burnishing gel (which I let almost dry completely before burnishing with my burnishing tool). Hope it helps :)

  • @BruceAUlrich

    @BruceAUlrich

    6 жыл бұрын

    That does help. And it might be the glue I'm using. I'm going to pick up some contact cement and see if that helps. I was using a PVA glue that I've seen Jimmy Diresta use for leather and bookbinding. It dries kind of hard though. Good idea about using a nail file to roughen the edge after the glue. And I have been using some glycerin saddle soap for edge treatment, rather than burnishing gel. It was recommended by someone else.

    I use the white glue too, as it wipes off with a damp cloth when I make a knife sheath and a little left on the edge helps with the burnishing. The music seemed appropriate to the content, I enjoyed it. Nice wallet by the way. lol

    Thank you very much. It's a leather dye called "brown" :) but you can obtain this effect depending on how much you put dye on some areas (still wet or dry) and the leather oil. Thanks a lot for watching.
