Making a classic Spartan, Roman, style helmet out of EVA floor mats

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Pattern Available Here: www.etsy.com/shop/letsmakegeekstuff
What you'll need:
• EVA Foam: I designed and made this with inexpensive anti-fatigue mats, 1 cm thick, available at many home improvement stores. Higher quality EVA is also available at some craft stores and online. Small variation in foam thickness should work fine.
• Contact Cement
• Utility knife with new blades
• Dremel with barrel sanding attachment: lower grit sanding barrel for creating bevels and t-visor groves, high grit barrel sander for polishing details and seems.
• Heat Gun (or very hot hair drier)
• Bandsaw: If available, a bandsaw with tilting table is highly recommended!
• Sealer and paint of your choice

I like your design for this classic helmet. It turned out great! I've never seen you take one to the finished ready to wear product. Will you show a tutorial of your sealing, painting, and weathering process?

I can’t wait to get started with this version. I think it’s the best out of all the gladiator,300, spartan type helmets that I’ve run across. I do have a question. I’ve been at this a few years now and I’ve learned to line up my seems as well as possible but what I find annoying is once I think a piece is successfully glued to another piece and maybe I stop for the day, when I come back to it later I find that it has separated in one or more places. Would you have any thoughts on what I’m doing wrong? I’m generally putting on two coats of glue.

Assuming you are using contact cement, don't forget to stir it before using as it tends to separate and then it doesn't work as well. Some foams seem to really suck up glue, so when I'm having this problem I'll do one coat and let it dry and then a second before I put the pieces together. And if you are still having problems try a different brand. Many crafters in this space sware by the Barges brand.

Where did you get the white wax pencil! Do you think that I could make this from leather as well?

Hi! it's a wax fabric marking pencil. I've not made any of my patterns in leather. The concern I'd have is that many of my patterns depend on heating, stretching, and shaping the foam, and I don't think leather has the same give, so I don't know if leather would be stretchy enough, if that makes sense.

The approximate inside circumference of this helmet when printed at 100% is 60cm. The measure from the top corner of the eye hole to the tip of the side piece is 17cm. There are instructions on how to resize the helmet in the pattern. You can also watch my youtube vid "how to resize digital patterns" which walks you through the printing settings to make adjustments.
