Norm Abraham was my guy. He's still my hero through nostalgia as watching his show was something I always did with my late father. Discovery shed I think it was over here in the 90's 00's. I got to say though I can't pick a winner between you both. And I hope you take that as a huge compliment. The reason I like your format so much is you don't feel the need to vocalise everything and you have an endearing dry sense of humour. Your attention to detail is remarkable and its all about the product unlike most KZreadrs with that inflated ego and shit music banging out in the background. Your a real down to earth guy. I do this all the time! i made a 10k bar. for my house for only 700 dollars ~ Its fun doing it YOURSLEF! Watching your own ideals come to life. Plus all the money you save, by doing it YOURSELF

Those were some good pallets. Most pallet wood around where I'm from are only 3/8inch thick.

Artisan? Craftsman? Not sure what to call you, so I'll just say "AWESOME!"

Well that was 40 minutes of my life filled with pleasure, excellent job sir.

When you are testing it and from the camera's point of view, the bar on its surface has parts peeled off in the final finish. I'm a furniture polisher and that's because you used water-based products before using oil-based products and some don't hold up well with others. In my opinion, it would have been better finished with a good lacquer luster. Greetings from Montevideo, Uruguay (South America).

@hans hansen i mean hes 100% right.. i don't know about you, but i learned that water and oil doesn't mix in 2nd or 3rd grade. There is 2 PROPER ways to "mix" oil based and water based products and this guy did neither. One option is choose what finish you want first, then apply the finish let it COMPLETELY CURE! NOT JUST DRY! (drying takes a couple hours while curing can take multiple weeks) and once the first finish is completely cured, you then go on to add your 2nd Finish. The faster way to do it, is too add your first coat, let it DRY, then add a coat of de-waxed shellac on your piece before you switch to a finish with a different base. Now am i the KNOW-IT-ALL for understanding basic finishing techniques? no. Us people in the woodworking/furniture community just like to share knowledge on these subjects... Thats all

I think you guys all have the wrong end of the stick, maybe I didnt explain it well; I only used one finish on the top- "Rustins worktop oil" which the tin says is water based! i know i couldnt work that out either which is what i was referring to in the subtitles, it was horrible stuff and smells like fish! ill stick to oil based oil in the future.

I learned much in watching the video AND reading the comments, which I read all of. Part of the learning is picking up on the things that I can easily apply; other is learning about tools and how to that I have never heard of before, which I might not ever use, though allows the possibility, by knowing of such. Initially reacting to the lettering layout comments, then to a category of "the right way to do things" -- Intentional "beauty spots" can be used to distract from someone looking too perfect (whatever that is) or to create something to converse about, whether to express a point of view, or express other information of various worth, and learn what a variety of both categories there is. I assume that your customer was totally thrilled with the product. Thanks for the pleasure, admiration and inspiration from this video.

Pallet wood is a fandamnedtastic resource often overlooked! It's much easier to get than reclaimed barn wood, and can be used in so many different ways! Glued together vertically or horizontally, making a thick slab or a nice, flat clean slate for your imagination. It can be cut into strips and turned into a chopping block, or a counter backsplash. It can be disassembled from the skid plates and both the thin and thick lumber reused. It can be 'de-nailed' & 'de-metaled,' and none or all of the marks left from that process can be filled in and hidden, depending on how distressed a look you want. It xan be shaped, made into thin, veneer-like slices that can be shaped beautifully (and then re-sandwiched back, for strength), in any curves you could dream of and make jigs for. It can then be stained, or just sealed, with beautiful results, or primed and painted. It can be distressed more, scarred, scuffed, burned, scraped, scratched, dented, and gouged, and give stunning results, before staining, or after painting to make it "antiqued" and reseal over those marks. It's a wonderful resource that I've made a whole lot out of, and will happily make a whole lot more out of, in the future! In fact, I'm considering doing my kitchen counters in a chopping block pattern (maybe distressed, maybe not) then pouring epoxy resin over it, and having something beautiful again, for decades. If you don't want pallet wood, fine - leaves more for us that do!

Give a man the right tools, then add talent and imagination and he can make anything . It would be an honor just to sweep his floors. I hopeI a young person sees this video and it changes his or hers life’s calling.

I noticed you using some " old school " techniques. Your work has a lot of pride and heart in it. Back when. People used " bees wax " as their final coat. Water proof and looked better every time it was wiped down. Very proud of you 👍

Cutting plugs: I've watched a boat builder bore the plugs, put masking tape over the plugs first, then cut them all out using a band saw. Then, all the plugs came out together face down on this sheet of tape and all grain oriented in the same direction for installation. Looked like a good idea that I will try next time.

Lager is one thing, Corona is about as nasty as they come.

So cool, such a shame it's so late in life I've taken an interest in this stuff. There's so much stuff in this workshop that looks so much fun to use, but it's 1000's upon 1000's upon 1000's upon 10's of 1000's worth of tools/machines. Those G clamps alone would cost more than a month's worth of disposable income. Makes me wonder if there's such a thing as a public workshop, where you could pay to get in and use the tools. If not, now there's a business idea.

Public Workshops do exist! I mean you pay a fee to use them, but they are a thing at least in some areas. I recently found one that has a full woodshop as well as a garage with a full lift.

I know your pain man. I was spoiled when I had shop class in school. From 6th grade to 12th grade. But I did take complete advantage of my time there in high school. My teacher was cool as hell and let me build what ever I wanted as long as I got the requirements done. Not only did I finish all the requirements (way before anyone else did) I also built a pair of home speaker cabinets 32" H x 17" W x 14" D, not small by any means. Plus 1 band pass sub box for my car and 2 slant face sub boxes for my friend and a fellow student. Then I built 2 simple entertainment centers and a few ornate shelves. I racked up a $3K bill lol. I did spend all my study hall and lunch time down there and it's the only class I scored a A++ in. Now, today all I have is a cordless Dewalt drill and a tool box with basic mechanics tools in it. Also if I do want to build something, I have the big box store pre-cut and I just assemble simple things. Side Note: When in high school shop, not only did we do wood working but the teacher had us learn metal working as well like welding, turning on a lathe, casting aluminum and using a brake.

You do not need all those tools to acomplish very close results with a bit of planning and creativity... He took rustic pallet wood cleaned it up so it was perfect "new" wood then then torched it and stained it to make it rustic.. If you just used the pallet wood as is on a thin plywood backing they do not need to be perfectly square paint the plywood black and then any gaps just look like rustic shrinkage / warpage and with it being over black they are not noticeable. Plus you need less work making it look rustic. For the top buy some remnant oak tongue & groove flooring tons on Facebook marketplace or discount places may have some leftovers... Instead of the curve you do a 45 degree angle on the bar front but still do the curve on the top. You could build something very similar with just a sander, jig saw, skill saw and 4 clamps ( 2 c-clamps and 2 Bar). I built many things in my One bedroom condo last one was this cabinet with just basic hand tools: www.instructables.com/Covid-Cabinet-With-No-Workshop/

Almost all his fancy tools are about saving time because he's trying to make a living at this and time is money. Look up Paul Sellers who makes amazing stuff with only hand tools.
