Making #11 Percussion Caps, Part 2

In part 2 of this series, I take the #11 caps that I punched out of a Pepsi can, and load them using Prime All. This is a corrosive primer compound, however, black powder is also corrosive so it's not a big deal to me. Eventually I will reload standard primers with this stuff too, but that's for another video. Long story short, they work just fine in my Uberti 1851 Colt Navy with SlixShot nipples.

For what its worth, after I have mixed all the powders together I drop about 25 drops of acetone and 5 drops of new-skin onto the powder and mix it up into a slurry. Then with an eye dropper, I drop one drop of slurry into each cap. With a single batch of powder, I make about 15 caps. After dropping a drop into the 15 caps, if i have any slurry left over I repeat the process into the same caps until all of the slurry is used up. The new-skin is a binder so the powder doesn't drop out of the caps. I can put all of my finished caps into a small candy tin and shake it vigorously and the powder does not fall out. I set my newly made caps outside in the hot Arizona sun to dry for about an hour or two and they are ready for use.

I have some very small funnels (used for pouring natural medicinal mixtures into capsules), which works perfectly for filling the caps with priming mix. Then just a drop of acetone, tamp, and when dry, a tiny drop of liquid hair mousse (which is just hair spray) to seal them. Works like a charm!

When filling my caps I made a small cone of paper to pour into the caps with, not an easy solution and it did get smushed and start to feed poorly so I had to make another one but it worked. As for once it was all dried and set I ripped some bits of tissue to stuff in the caps with a matchstick to keep the powder in place, doesn't seem to mess with the ignition at all and keeps the powder from falling out. Just enough to cover it and sit in the cap, don't want to fill it up so much that you can't get it on the nipple.

If you have a piece of aluminum about the same thickness as the caps you can drill a hole just over cap diameter, drop a cap into the hole, dump your load onto the aluminum plate and sweep it into the cap with a small brush. Caps don’t flip over or jump around the bench and you don’t need to fight with aiming the scoop over the cap and hope to get the contents in. Your reload time will triple.

I’m into cowboy mounted shooting where you ride a horse and shoot balloons at close range with blanks. Normally I use colt single actions with blank shells but the supply’s to reload those shells have been scarce. I’m using my 1858 cap and ball revolvers now and I make the caps out of aluminum cans but I use 2 roll caps and a pinch of fine powder instead.

As an update to my attempts with this kit, if you are using pyrodex at least, you have to really put quite a bit of the priming powder into the caps, and, they really lose power with age so, either make as much as you want right before going out, or your caps lose their power overtime. At least that is what I found. Real Black powder would probably be easier to work with but I have not tried it in my revolvers, just something I picked up from shooting a flintlock. Black powder ignites way easier

I bought the cap maker and the prime all mix. Took a month to get it. One thing.....well more than one thing, I found that sometimes the cap would split or have a small Crack in it after I punched it out. These are worthless and should be discarded before you apply your compound. I didn't do this on my first attempt and found only 2 of five caps would ignite. Also the compound itself would easily fall out of the homemade cap if the cap were dropped! There is a learning curve to this process. There must be someway to get the compound to stay in the cap. Some of the caps would ignite the charge in the cylinder and some of them would pop but wouldn't ignite the charge and some of them wouldn't pop at all! I made up about 75 caps from the cap maker but after my first attempt and failure of detonation, I went through those caps and discarded the cracked ones. Some of the caps form unevenly. One side higher than the other. I use slixshot nipples also. I found that sometimes the cap is very difficult to put it on the nipples. I also was a little light in pressing the mixture into the cap. I was a little concerned that the pressure might set the cap off since I am using acetone and it evaporates very quickly! 5 minutes and the compound appears very dry! This is another thing I feel needs to be addressed. Anyway, I have plenty of compound and no shortage of aluminum cans and nothing but time. I'm sure I'll figure it out and once I get a good success rate, I'll post a video and let others know how. Great video! Thanks!

A couple things that I'm tweaking (or will since I just moved and don't have my reloading bench set back up yet) is that I purchased 0.1mm x 200mm x 1000mm H62 Brass Metal Thin Sheet Foil Plate Roll from Amazon to use in place of aluminum. As far as the compound sticking inside once dried, another commenter pointed out that he mixes shellac in with denatured alcohol to act as a binder. I will try that as well. I will update with a new video if I have success with my tweaks. Good luck with yours, and thanks for the comment!

I used aluminum trays that my wife had saved. I made about fifty caps and all but about five came out really nice. When forming the caps, make sure you keep strip of aluminum pressed into punch body, and gently tap around the top of the punch with a light hammer until it cuts out the piece of aluminum. Do not try to make the cap with just one hard hit!

I should be as not sure what everything is at this point, but I will not use a Plastic Insulator for my mixing, most likely SS for electrostatic discharge as I am familiar with this in haz locations with chemicals and electronics, plastic in the wrong conditions can be problematic? I use this for all my bench reloading with a wood bench, parts of my bench are grounded metal clad or topped and some wood tools also Looks like decent ignition energy! My modern #10 caps are just not getting it done reliably lately.

I too was frustrated with measuring the powder as directed...but I developed a system. First I fashioned a tiny powder paddle/spoon with the end of a coffee stir straw or wd40 extension straw and a lighter. Then I used the inside cap of a Gatorade bottle and filled it up so it's mostly covered in caps sitting next to each other. Then I pretty much eyeballed the amount of powder in each cap, halfway to even full almost. After dripping the acetone the level drops a bit so didn't seem to matter. Whatever powder missed the caps and falls into the Gatorade cap can just be scraped up and reused, even if the acetone got it wet and it dried to crust. Seemed to hold in their pretty good, but I'm gonna try the hairspray trick.
