Making #11 percussion caps, part 1

Primers are scarce, percussion caps for my black powder revolvers are non existent. Here's my go at making my own. This is part one. Making the cap itself. My next video will be making the priming material and testing.

    I've been using this for the past year and it works well. As long as the primer compound is in the cap it works. Carrying the caps loose knocks the compound out so I make only what I'm going to use and pack them in Styrofoam for the trip to the range.

    Was thinking if you sanded the aluminum sheet smooth before punching the caps the primer compound would stick better.

    Just ordered 1000 CCI no. 11's from a supplier. They are pricey. Hazmat, shipping, etc. But if you search you can find 'em. Great demo. Looks like fun.

    Good to know the cutter can still be had. I have an olde Forster Tap-O-Cap. Probably punched out about 12,000 at least. I use a paper roll cap inserted in the cup and stumbled upon a nipple primer of all things. Dumps about 1 grain of powder in the nipple and with the assembled cap I've had very good success. Will have to check out your video on the Prime-All. Thanks for sharing this.

    I didn't know they made a nipple primer. Never even heard of one. That would make this a much easier endeavor. When you watch part 2, you'll see what I mean. I wonder where I could find such a device, antique?

    @@RooftopKYNipple primer is at TotW. A pan primer works too but doesn't sit on the nipple very well and dumps a bit too much powder. Also, a standard paper punch is a bit big. Another tuber uses a star punch from Michael's craft store. A smaller hollow punch would knock out the paper caps as well. A bit of work but I refuse to 10 cents for a percussion cap.

    Newb question, can a 12 gauge muzzloader blackpowder that takes 209 primers use primers popped out of a 00 buckshot shell? And vice versa?

  • @RooftopKY

    @RooftopKY

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes. Any 209 primer will work on a muzzle loader as long as that's what it uses.

    Thanks for the video... I ordered a Pietta 44cal and then found out I can't buy percussion caps anywhere! I also ordered Slix-Shot nipples. I was wondering if I should get the #11 or the new #10 cap making tool. It looks like the #11 fits pretty good. Has anyone tried the #10 homemade cap on a Slix-Shot nipple? Thanks again for your video!

    @@cadywelp235 I ordered the #11 cap maker and the prime all primer mix. Only took about 3 days before they shipped, I should get it tomorrow. Lots of good info in the Blackpowder section on The High Road forums. Most are leaving out the hardner in the Prime All mix and adding a couple drops of Duco glue to a teaspoon of Acetone and using a drop of that. Good luck finding or making primers!

    Maybe try 2 or 3 drops and let them sit for a few days to really dry. I noticed that one drop didn't sometimes really make a good paste of the compound that adhered to the inside of the cap. If it's loosely adhered, it will fall out and not work. Hopefully this helps?

  • @markshriver3548

    I've now made about 50 and only 3 have worked. I did notice that 1 drop wasn't enough to harden the powder. Maybe I'll try 3 drops and let it sit longer. I'm also thinking that it might be better for the cap to be half full instead of flush, but thanks for your reply.
