Make Your Own Spool by Welding Your Gears! - Operation Cheap Jeep

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video we take the cheap jeep and do some redneck mods like welding the rear spider gears to the carrier and creating a redneck locker, welded diff, lincoln locker, or spool. It's basically a locker that is locked all the time. My choice for rear ends, wouldn't work so great for steering purposes on the front diff!

My 88 bronco is on 18x39.5x15 boggers with 90 f350 axles. Both diffs are welded. 15 years later still no issues. No broken u joints. No cracks. All for a handful of 7018 rods. Nice thing about a welded or spooled diff is theres no hard engagement of the locker during wheel spin to break axles and u joints. If your 85 percent off rd 15 percent road to get from trail to trail this is a great way to go. But i drive my bronco to work daily and drive all over on 37x13.50x18 nitto mudgrapplers for street use. It squaks around corners pretty loud but i deal with it. And yes id TOTALLY drive from massey to B.C tomorrow if i had to. Its fine.

We used to weld spider gears back in the old days of racing. Just go to a junk yard and get a Diff out of a 3/4 tone something. There usually posi trac. Those welds can break and you'd be stranded. Think about it. We break teeth off hardened gears. Welds are never as good as hardened steel. So if teeth can break....welds can break easier. Some things you want to do right.

Make sure you connect the ground to the ring gear like he did. Don't connect to the housing. The current will travel through the bearings and pit them. You will be tearing back into it soon enough to change bearings. Don't ask me how I know...

it is a great idea. the only part of the tooth to engage the pinion is the face.the back and tips could take a lot of damage before they caused any issues. regardless, if you have a good connection it won't arc and pit. the bearings have small gaps that the arc jumps and causes micro welds and pits.

  • @MrTheHillfolk

BigDaddyDrew Hoe Electric motors will have pitted bearings because of this issue. One way to stop arcing your bearings that is add a grounding brush on the armature to the motor case. Same deal here, depending on where the welder is grounded (on the case) its current path is thru the bearings.

Hugh G Wrection Lol don’t clamp right on the teeth, anywhere on the pig would be fine. Pull a ring gear bolt and add a metal tab for a ground , or if the cross pin bolt threaded in the case you could put one there too.

Great quickie just to have fun to go 4xing but I did the same thing on several Riggs and if you've drive it on the street they will eventually break... Mine took a while but slowly started coming apart into little fragments that eventually get bigger and then cycle through the whole rear end. But I don't have regrets doing it it was fun, good know how video.

Welded diffs shouldn’t ever break, unless you really beat on it, but usually then you’ll break an axle not the diff, I’d try warming it up a little longer before welding, may have just not had enough penetration and broke apart after a while. I’ve seen a few guys dailying welded diffs for 8+ years without issues, just destroys tires a lot quicker lol

Great for trail ONLY rigs. Terrible one dry/snow daily. My yj runs a front lock rite/open rear, stock axles 33's and yet you get stuck and very severe stuff. My zj, lock rite front/ true track rear same lift/33's, both excellent daily drivers and fantastic trail rigs. You'll never be happy with welded rear diffs if you drive daily, deadly mistake when winter hits. Ps, installed correctly, front lock rites drive perfect and quite for normal driving and although they fully lock in 4wd, just don't gas it hard around tight corners and they're awsome for city bad roads too.

There is a better way to do it. Pull the center pin and C clips and remove all the spiders. Heat one gear at a time, weld three teeth solid, skip three, weld three. Do this to all four gears. Reinstall the gears. Now you have a completely serviceable fully locked rear differential. The three on, three off numbers apply to GM ten and twelve bolt differential. Count your teeth before you start to be sure those numbers work for your rig. Before know it alls start saying this can't be done or doesn't work, I have done the rear differential gears on around 825 demolition derby cars without a single break or malfunction of any kind. Be sure to pre heat the gears and wrap them in a fireproof welding blanket and allow to cool overnight.

So I'm a little new to this and I see you only have one front wheel jacked up so the shafts will spin . I'm an idiot and disconnected my shaft . Then broke a bolt off on to the yoke shaft on the diff side . Now I feel so stupid.

What if you welded 3 together and grind off sides of the teeth on the 4th to make a poor man's lunchbox locker? Then the play (from grinding off) would allow partial difference on road just like the aftermarket locker kits....?

is yours a lincoln locker, or a miller locker. the lincoln locker is much better for both on and off road, it will last longer and hold up to bigger tires. :)

Alfredo Texas64 He’s got it backwards though because when I walked into the welding place to buy a welder, the guy asked: weekend warrior or professional? I said pro and he said : ok well let’s look at some millers instead of Lincolns. I walked out with a miller 130 and a Lincoln cart, because it had room to stuff the plasma cutter below the welder.

seems to me that this wouldn't be to good making sharp turns especially on pavement. I did this years ago on a Bronco front, but it had lockouts so it was just locked in for off road. also it always it would pull to the side when trying to go up a sand bank. But the traction was great.
