Make Your Habits Stick Forever (elastic habits)

Get the book "Elastic Habits" here:
US: amzn.to/37ZHqju
EU: amzn.to/2vbTyPB
Let me ask you this:
Why do most people fail at creating habits that stick?
Well, there could be plenty of factors, but one major reason is they are not consistent with them.
They might achieve their habit goal one day, but then the next day something comes up, and they skip doing the habit altogether.
But the point of any habit, is to make it a habit in the first place.
This means doing it every single day without fail.
So how can we do that?
How can we become consistent with our habits so they actually stick?
The solution is to make our habits elastic.

True! It’s also a matter of making it part of your “identity”. If I’m an “active and fit guy” I am more likely to be going to the gym and take pride in it. It’s about changing your mindset. Arnold said that when he worked out he would smile during his sets while everyone else worked out looking miserable because with every rep he felt he was actualizing his personal goals and dreams.

My mini goals are TINY goals. No, not reading one page. Reading one line. Sometimes, one word. No, not one negative pull up. Putting on my exercise shorts. Just the shorts. Or getting up from bed. Sometimes, you need to go that far if you struggle with burnout or depression.

I'm learning Spanish via Duolingo. I'm on a 200 days' strike already. For that I have obtain at least 10 points. (one "lesson) That takes at most 15 minutes. Sometimes (the last months more often than before) I do only that one lesson. But when I have time and taste then I do 3, 5 or even more lessons. So I gain more points. Depending on what my "class-mates" do, I have to make between 200 and 500 points each week to stay on the same class level. It's just after midnight now. So now I'm going to the Thursday's lesson. To keep the strike (well, streak it should be) and habit alive.

I did this when I wanted to get into the habit of drawing daily. There were some days where even 5 min of drawing I knew couldn't happen. So I just did a doodle. Any doodle. An ugly doodle, an emoji, a simple eye. Took a min or less, but that didn't matter, it was done. That said, to give myself the incentive to not just rely on crappy doodles I paid myself a certain amount for minutes spent so that I could buy myself a surface book 2 and get into digital art (plus I needed a laptop anyway). I accomplished my goal and although I had the money it still took me months before I bought it because I enjoyed drawing with pencil so much I didn't want to get distracted 😁 It really did become a habit. So much so that if I didn't draw it felt like I was going to bed without brushing my teeth. And in those instances, since I had that nagging feeling I just doodled on my cell phone since I had a Samsung Note. If I remember correctly I got the idea from the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen, whereby making a consistent daily habit of doing the least amount possible would gradually over time add up to larger overall improvements. That said, once you get in the motion of things, the momentum of it will drive you to do more and without considerable willpower. These philosophies are definitely very useful methods for building habits. I liked the idea of having small, medium and larger efforts to choose from ^_^

It lets you do mini stuff and get the satisfaction of daily success, but the higher levels of accomplishment give you extra reward on the days you do want to do more. Not my account btw, but I would like to express my appreciation for explaining simply widening your evaluation space for the day [ from { ALL :> , NOTHING :( } to { ALL(or elite) :> , medium(or plus :) , minimum(or mini) :/ , or NOTHING :( } ] with a clear first step goal of making mini an absolute minimum and pushing the average up. I've always known habits were the key to success, and I felt I had to force myself to lower my goals to achieve consistency. I can't believe I've never considered evaluating the day in graduations. Truly, thanks man. I just made a calender and five part goal sheet (nutrition, stretch, workout, heigene, and work) each with 3 stages (pink purple and blue..... colors help make things clear) and rules (such as work after (workout after stretch) and (heigene and nutrition are on schedule) For others work should be more important, but as a recovering addict trying to kick other habbits its very important for my mindset to stay right. Work is delayed gratification and very important, but as it affects my mindset later it takes last place atm.

  • @elainelorimer818

    @elainelorimer818

I wonder if a good rule of thumb is to not make new elite goals until you can get medium to be your mini (once Mike starts seeing all blue and red, he should pull out a white sticker, then and only then does he consider green a failure) once this stage hopping happens again he can reuse green.

3:22 "Don't break the chain" works great but the trap in it is that it can be incredibly demoralising if a long chain ever *does* break. It's very discouraging starting again from zero, knowing it will take ages to to even get back to where you were. "Screw it" starts looking very appealing in those circumstances...

AHA, this is the concept I used (unknowingly) to change my diet/lifestyle forever. I set up my new plan to be strict 5 days per week and lenient (wide open) for 2 days. Later on I found I didn't need the 2 days so much (eating "off plan" eventually became less appealing because of all the drawbacks, and how tastes/cravings change). I was able to get off sugar/sodas, fats/oils, and animal products (yes that includes CHEESE). Cheese was tough, kept trying to reestablish itself, but eventually I wised up to the addictive nature of chemistry of cheese and no longer eat it except on my "open" days. These open days could fall on any day of the week to allow for birthdays and holidays when folks would be eating more traditional things and less healthful things. Made the plan brilliantly easy --or ELASTIC as is taught here. Thanks for helping me make that connection to some awesome changes I already made in my life. It will make it easier to design "elasticity" into the other changes I'm making.

This is great! I struggle with keeping the habit of exercise. I've tried and failed time after time, even tracked it, but it didn't work. Now I will just adjust the three versions, if I can't go to the gym, I'll do 10 squats at home for exemple and still have achieved my goal for that day. I won't give up. This makes me very excited!!

This video is excellent. As someone who has health challenges, breaking it down into three versions helps me on my difficult days, which helps free me from guilt. Thank you very much! 😁

Great video! I like how this combines multiple habit strategies into one system!! Building positive habits is one of the most important thing we can do to change our lives for the better. I like what Jim Rohn used to say, “we must all pay one of two prices. The price of discipline or the price of neglect.”
