Feeling Lonely? You're Not Alone

I believe we are in the midst of a loneliness crisis.
It's become quite common nowadays for people to struggle with feelings of isolation.
In fact, roughly one out of three people report having little to no friends or feelings of disconnection from people around them.
If you're one of those people, if you're feeling lonely, you're not alone.
It's a more common experience than you might realise.
In the last decade loneliness has been on the rise, without showing any signs of slowing down.
From the elderly who have nobody to talk to, to the young adults who are isolating themselves, nobody is immune.
But why is loneliness even a problem and why should you care?

One of the worst experiences in life is to be lonely and isolated while surrounded by people having fun and socialising. That fear of missing out and being reminded that you’re worthless. And going home alone. Not being picked for a team. Not being invited out. Being ignored. Having your ideas ridiculed. Being rejected. This is not a new thing. I felt the same way in the 90s long before social media.

As a man, it’s hard to make friends once you hit your mid 20s because that’s the time when most people get married, have kids, settle in careers and etc. loneliness happens a lot earlier than your 40s. people don’t have the time to hangout anymore and when they do it doesn’t feel the same atleast to me. I feel the best you can do as a person who doesn’t have friends is to create life goals for yourself. Travel the world, create art, write a book, meditate, join a social club or church. I’m always making sure I keep my depression and loneliness at bay by playing video games because it’s my favorite hobby. Sometimes I’ll communicate with other players and it fulfills that void.

I sometimes feel like I’m going a bit crazy because of lack of close confidants. I’m naturally an introverted person that doesn’t mind my own company so for me to feel this way I’m EXTREMELY isolated. My issue is. I feel I’ve been let down, hurt and disappointed by so many people that my trust in people is just gone. It seems as if every person I’ve ever put my trust in has broken it in the most horrific way possible. I don’t trust my own judge of character anymore and so, as much as being lonely feels terrible, I feel like it’s better than the alternative of being hurt and betrayed again and again. It’s sad but sometimes no company is better than bad company.

Something you didn't get into that much is the quality of social interactions. I don't think it helps to interact superficially with fake personalities we create to not appal each other. Instead we need to find somebody we can open up to and just be ourselves and then there's another condition: understanding and approval. No matter how imperfect we are, we need somebody who affirms our self image. My daughter's death & Covid changed everything & everybody. But for me, I have never felt so lonely knowing I cannot hear her voice on the phone or see her face ever again. 💔

I can't even begin to imagine the depth of pain and sadness you must be experiencing after the loss of your daughter. It's completely normal to feel an intense sense of loneliness and heartbreak in such a difficult time. Grief is a complex and individual journey, and there's no right or wrong way to navigate it. It's important to be patient and compassionate with yourself as you heal. Reach out to support groups or seek professional help to connect with others who may have experienced similar losses. Remember that healing takes time, and it's okay to feel a mix of emotions. Cherish the memories of your daughter, and know that she will always hold a special place in your heart.

While some people thrive in crowded environments, others may prefer more solitude. It's important to respect and appreciate these differences in order to maintain healthy relationships. Finding someone who shares similar interests and values can create a harmonious balance in a partnership. Loneliness means I am doing what needs to be done to stay safe from those cruel people.

I understand. What you describe sounds like a kind of trauma. I have been researching this myself as I only recently came to such conclusions regarding my own situations (which partly stemmed from abuse). Narcissistic behavior is fully encouraged and people can be shockingly thoughtless or oblivious about how their own actions affect others. They will preach their “morality” the live-long day, yet never stop to ask a common friend how their day went; it is virtue signaling.

It seemed even doctors were pressuring me to be social. Thus, I complied and made what I thought were friends. When it came to the time we parted ways because of her cruelty, she also took all the friends with her. Although they were all false friends, I did not know that at the time. Cruelty was sourced from all of them. But that is what I thought friendship was supposed to be, until I read some books. This is why, today, I have no girlfriend nor friends. I do not need more fakes in my life. The only way to assure this is to refrain from friendships and romantic relationships.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've had such hurtful experiences with your friends and in your relationship. It's incredibly painful to have people you trust betray and mistreat you. Remember, their behavior is a reflection of them, not of your worth as a person. It's important to surround yourself with people who uplift and support you, rather than tearing you down. While it may seem difficult now, try not to let these negative experiences define your outlook on being a good person. Being kind and caring is a beautiful trait that can attract genuine and compassionate individuals into your life. Take this time to focus on self-care, healing, and rebuilding your self-esteem. Reach out to supportive friends, family members, or seek professional help to navigate through the healing process. You deserve love, respect, and true friendships, and I believe there are kind-hearted individuals out there who will value and appreciate you for who you are.

It's wonderful to see that you recognize the importance of friendship at such a young age. Having someone to share your stories, thoughts, and experiences with can bring joy and a sense of connection. It's normal to occasionally feel lonely, especially during conflicts or when there isn't someone readily available to talk to. Remember to value the friendships you already have and make an effort to maintain them. Additionally, be open to new opportunities to meet new people and forge new connections in the future. Friendship is a beautiful and enriching part of life, and by actively seeking and nurturing these relationships, you'll create a support system that brings you fulfillment and happiness.

Loneliness is made all the worse if you don't have the right personality type to escape it. If you're naturally extroverted you're going to find it easier to go out and meet new people should you feel lonely. If however you're more of an introvert, you're most likely going to find socialising a lot more difficult, especially if you go out unaccompanied. I'm 65, introverted, and I've never felt so lonely in all my life. I also have mental health issues. I have one friend who never comes to visit me any more. The reasons he gives are without doubt a complete load of BS. He calls me on the telephone but he never visits, despite the fact I've asked him multiple times. The remaining members of my family very rarely call either, and neither do they visit. I find it hard to get on with people at work as well since the group I work with are one big clique. I'm isolated and excluded on a daily basis hence the reason why I have depression. It's hard to live in a world in which nobody cares about you anymore.

I’m very lonely, but I partially make up for that by having more formal relationships. Before I retired these were the relationships I had with co-workers. In retirement, I tutor English language learners and these people form a valuable part in my keeping connected with others. I am an introvert so I don’t need a very busy social life or a lot of friends. But I sure do wish I had a least one real friend. I used to have a number of friends, but over the years and moves I didn’t do the work of keeping these relationships. I regret that.

I think when people move round it is hard to keep contact, it is expensive to travel up. My friend moved up North, I don't have the money to visit.

It's great to hear that you have found ways to stay connected through your formal relationships, such as tutoring English language learners. It's important to recognize and appreciate the value that these connections bring to your life. As an introvert, it's understandable that you may not need a busy social life or a large number of friends, but having at least one genuine friend can make a significant difference in feeling understood and supported. While it's natural for friendships to change or fade over time, it's never too late to work on cultivating new connections or rekindling old ones. Consider reaching out to old friends and expressing your desire to reconnect, or explore opportunities to meet like-minded individuals through activities or groups that align with your interests. Remember, building friendships takes effort and consistency, but it's worth it for the meaningful connections and companionship they can provide.

I believe your relationship with yourself is the most important thing in your life. You are your best friend.. when somebody treat you the way you would treat yourself then you might have a good friend. Unless, of course you treat yourself like crap.

I don't know. I reflect this yesterday and back day. I always wondering why I always lonely in my journey until this adulthood. Maybe ya, I am lack of self esteem and lack of social skill. But, even I try to be better to open up and be vulnerable to people that I am feel safe to open up, I am still stuck on one side relationship. Did I am good enough as friend? Why my feeling is not reciprocated? Why I am attract to unavailable people? Did I make mistake along the way? But, feel that way don't make my situation better, just make my feeling miserable. I know, I did my best as I know I think to do. I should accept for what happen and for who I am. In deep, I still don't know,

My so called "friends" will only come to me when they need something from me; they are merely baggage that I will gladly live without. Those "friends" at the workplace are out ot get me every opportunity they got. It is much preferable to rely on oneself for lifelong happiness.

I've made the mistake of overvaluing workplace friends. I'm not saying you shouldn't be friendly at work, but you need to look elsewhere for true friendship. That is, if you want friends. Not everyone does and there's nothing wrong with that

I think this video is accurate and gives good information on how it can be to be lonely. I'm 40 and have been lonely for 10+ years. I have a job and coworkers but that's it. When I'm asked how my holiday or birthday was I unfortunately find myself lying, because it does not feel socially accepted to be lonely. Like there is something wrong with people who are lonely. And to be honest with time lonely people like myself probably lose some of their social skills. And then we have the interesting problems that come with being alone, like there are some things that would be easier if you had at least one friend to call when you for example are going to move to a new home or if the car broke down and you needed a lift home. Depending on where you live and how your economy looks like, small things like this can get very interesting and challenging. Or just having one friend with you to go out to a club, event, sport or any activity would probably make things easier. But I have accepted the situation for myself, it is what it is.
