Make your Grading Policy more Equitable with Multiple Grading Schemes!

When you use multiple grading schemes, each student is graded according to multiple grading policies, and they receive the highest score. This way, a student who scores high on assessments but low on "effort" can receive a high course grade, while a student who scores low on assessments but high on effort is still rewarded for their effort.

Thank you for making this a simple idea every teacher should be using. The "what if" doc is a wonderful tool for kids to see the impact of their learning choices.

The idea of multiple grading schemes sounds intriguing but my 7th-grade students and their parents want immediate feedback from the schoolwide grading software program so they can monitor progress regularly. They expect grades to be entered routinely throughout the marking period and the focus is on the GPA. How can this be accomplished if using only a spreadsheet?

I still enter grades in our Learning Management System using one of the grading schemes (the one that includes all the categories). But I tell students that their grade on the LMS may not be their actual grade - they should use the WHAT IF Grading Calculator to determine their actual grade. However, it is worth noting that because you choose their highest grade in all the categories, they won't get a LOWER grade than what is on the LMS. Does that help?

My only issue is that I don't know how to implement MGS with our Learning Management System (Canvas). I am pretty sure that there is not a mechanism to set this up in Canvas...

Most LMS's don't have a way to do this! I provide my students with a WHAT IF grade calculator and create an excel spreadsheet to calculate all their grades in each grading scheme and pick out the highest one for me. Here's what WHAT IF calculator: www.avancecare.com/
