Make MEANINGFUL Pixel Art! (Tips for Beginners)

In this video, I describe my pixel art process for creating a 16 Bit scene for the Lospec Jam 2 contest. I wanted it to look both like a video game scene, but ALSO like a meaningful piece of art. Follow along the ups and downs, because I think this one turns out pretty cool!
My pixel art app of choice is Pixaki, and I draw my concept art in Procreate.

Neato, space is certainly a difficult subject to detail, especially with such a palette. Lovely to see you work

Super cool seeing the progress of the piece before you sent stuff to me! Also, thanks for the shoutout, bud! :) Definitely one of my favorite pieces of yours ever.

I would love to see a pixel art tutorial on dithering and anti aliasing! I love seeing both in art but im really bad at the latter

Ooh, anti aliasing is a fun one. I'm adding both of those to my Idea Bank. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks! Just don't overly detail your clouds in the background of your game; you don't want it to accidentally look like something in the foreground the player can interact with

Adding some VG HUD elements, or title screen elements in this case, feels like the right decision to enhance the 'gameyness' of it all... but man how I regret the funny little mustache alien had to go, even if it was probably the right thing to do.

I spent an embarrassing amount of hours between the booth and the little alien. It hurt my heart so bad when I made those layers invisible and suddenly the picture looked sooo much better

Loving your pixelart series so far! Do you have any advice on animating with pixelart? That's what I'm trying (and struggling with) at the moment.

Thank you! Eventually I'd like to make a video on animation, but my best advice in the meantime is to focus on key frames, the individual frames in which a character might pause between actions. I also like to occasionally add some blur in actions. Think like a waving lightsaber. I'll even add in a blur for a character pulling out a gun if it makes it look cooler and wouldn't interrupt the flow of action

Oh I will absolutely make a video on that one day. Aside from a silly comic I made 6 months ago for Instagram, I haven't made pixel comics in over a decade. I'm excited to dive back into that

So far it's just been by luck haha. Brandon James Greer posted a video on the Nokia one, so I hopped in on that. For LoSpec, I also happen to be a member of their Discord (I haven't actually posted there, just been a lurker) and saw their announcement. But if I find any more I plan on participating in, I'll start posting them to my Community Tab here on KZread so everyone else can join in.

@@RobinsonPixels Thank you! Are the rules and palettes of the ones you’ve already done still available to find? Or do they go down when the jam is done?

  • @RobinsonPixels

@@williamgessler6461 They are both up right now. The Nokia one was simple; just solid black and white with a 96x65 resolution. For this jam, if you go to the LoSpec website, then click the link for Articles, right now it's still there as the top option. (You have to follow the link in the Article to the itch page with the actual rules.)
