I Made These Pixel Art MISTAKES (So you don't have to)

I thought it would be fun to do a pixel art parody of Godzilla X Kong as Godzilla X Mega Man X Kong. In the process, I made a LOT of mistakes. This video outlines some of the top mistakes I made while creating this pixel art project. I end with a mock screenshot of this fake SNES video game.

Obviously Capcom owns Mega Man X and all related characters, and Toho/Warner Bros own the Godzilla and Kong stuff. This video is for educational purposes.

Ive recently started doodling for the first time since i was a kid, and now find my self obsessed with pixel art. My goal now is to have an entire pixel art comic done by 40. So I got 5 full years of blunders to make

You should make one now and then multiple ones per year. Then, when you hit 40, make your dream idea. (Or a new one, as you might have different ideas by then).

Ah yes, as someone who learned via trial by fire, I did all of those things for several years, now to be fair I didn't have an artists friends or resource to tell me to not do them, but hey I still learned and now know what not to do. Happy to see more pixel content 🦕

I like pixel art. From a design aspect, so long as it flows with your logic in regards to what you feel describes the themes. For me, as I am aware of the brain difference between reptiles and mammals, the reptils have most of their brain activity near the base of the spine in the 'repitilian brain' while mammals have a larger 'old mammalian' and 'new mammalian' brain. So there are 3 levels to the brain. The nurturing brain is the old mammalian and the brain which looks at the output of the reptilian and the old mammalian is called the new mammalian. Therefore, when designing a creature, depending how sensitive you wish to make that character to survival, nurturing, problem solving - you can change the shape of the skull. So, if Godzilla is quite aware of the connections between himself and others, he will have a bigger forehead or bigger skull. Same with King Kong. Thereby, in this picture, Godzilla appears more like a humanoid in that he has a deep/larrge forehead for a reptile. There is nothing wrong with that if that is what you feel is good logic flow. But particularly in pixel art, everything must serve a purpose and sometimes logic must be forgotten so that the visual flow is better than the lore flow. For Godzilla to appear more menacing, he has to have a specialized brain for combat, thereby, the head becomes shallower and this will result in a more menacing look. But if you make his skull too flat, he will appear like a wild animal and creature that is not aware of the connections between self and others. Nice artwork though, I see how you have use neutral colors for the background and then balanced the red and the blue by adding green. The green contrasts with the red sky. It's a nice setup. What you can do with the pillars is add the fibonacci sequence to modify the number of pillars so that there is a gap between each number. For example (3 pillars, gap, 2 pillars, gap, 1 pillar, gap, 1 pillar, gap, 0 pillars gap, 1 pillar, gap, etc). However you can also modify every second green pillar so that it is darker than the adjacent pillar. Thereby, it breaks up the pillars and stoips them from looking flat however in your scene, I see you have 3 flat bars. The red sky bar, the green raised highway/bridge and the black foreground which could be rocks or a forest - that black edge needs some variation. I would use the black repeating waves as an ideal place to use the fibonacci sequence.

Ooooh, solid breakdown and tips! I really, really dig what you're saying about the skull structures and the effects on the animal personality. Part of the problem with this was the initial commitment to sticking Godzilla in a humanoid helmet. Because I forced a reptile into that shape, it fundamentally changed the way the creature could be perceived. Neat! Thanks for the feedback!

This is an awesome channel lol, probably one of my favorite pixel art channels. From one Megaman fan (and pixel artist for that matter) to another, I think MMX (whether SNES or PS1) and the Zero series both have really good pixel art, glad you caught that mistake because their styles are vastly different even though they’re both 16 bit lol (and the way the sabers look are too, with Zero series sabers being triangular and X series ones being flashier lightsabers), different art styles/eras make a world of difference, and it’s kind of a timeline of how the anime style changed from the 80s/90s to the 2000s when everything just became cutesy, though Megaman Zero’s style is a bit more psuedo-chibi for what I imagine were the GBA’s hardware limitations as well as the artist’s style itself. But where I think where Megaman Zero’s style succeeds the most is Megaman ZX. Beyond the Megaman community itself, it’s such a vastly underrated and unknown game that I don’t know any modern pixel artists (not deviantart sprite comic artists from the 2000s) who actually work in the style or have analyzed it/tried to recreate it on YT. The pixel art in Megaman ZX/ZX Advent is beautiful and imo, unironically some of the best pixel art I’ve ever seen even when compared to Metal Slug or contemporary pixel artists. It’s absurdly detailed, especially the worlds, and the characters sprites are done really well. I’d say if you ever do one of these again in the future, this is definitely a huge recommendation.

Excellent breakdown of the different Mega Man styles. I one hundred percent agree that ZX is top of the line. I used to make different potential Mega Merge sprites back in the day. I really wish they'd kept adding in new suits; I really thought that was a perfect way to blend Classic through ZX into one ultimate series. Maybe if they'd continued the series, that could have happened. I'm adding a ZX episode into my idea bank right now. Thanks for the suggestion!

Awesome, welcome to the community! A lot of pixel artists say to start very small, like 16x16 for a character. Personally, I don't like sticking my character in a tiny box like that unless it's for a specific challenge. I usually aim for a specific style and place existing characters nearby for height reference. For example, Mega Man is 24 pixels tall. Just remember the larger your character, the more detail you have to add. Mega Man doesn't even have any fingers in 8 Bit, but they're pretty much required in 16 Bit for that style. I've done very little environment design, but I like to start small before I go big. Before drawing a city, can I draw a shed? A house? A skyscraper? Small projects can help you build confidence for larger works. As for the size, for learning purposes, I wouldn't go any larger than the Gameboy Advance resolution of 240x160. Even that may be too much, so it might be best to start at the Gameboy resolution of 160x144.
