OOOOoooo while you were sewing and you made the comment that your background could be lighter.... I immediately thought kitchen.... cookbooks with a mixer, maybe a can opener and utensils( spoons, spatula, cutting knives) Or even sewing with notions and sewing machine and iron. Thanks for the ideas!

📖📓📗📕📖🌺 Hey!! I don't know who reads these or IF anyone does, but I really enjoyed this. It doesn't feel so rushed like a lot of them do. You don't lollygag, but it doesn't feel like you are trying to get it done in under 10 minutes, either! 😂😂😂 I am SO GLAD you did this!! I've been so curious how to do it! You made it so simple! THANK YOU!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Gorgeous quilt! I wondered to myself "what would I put on my bookshelves?" I looked at one in the room and realized I have family pictures on all of my bookshelves. Wouldn't it be cool to print a picture onto fabric and make a little frame around it and add it to your bookshelf? Especially if you were gifting the quilt you could make the picture personal to the recipient! Such fun ideas!

I did this for my sister-in-law’s quilt in 2019. My sister helped me a bit by printing 2 photos onto fabric for me. My sister-in-law was a librarian, and I gave her the quilt when she retired. The book case shelves were 3 different heights and I used 3 different patterns. Loads of fun to do.

Ha! I made a much more complicated bookshelf making it unique to me by putting a coffee pot and cups, a vase with many different flowers which I did a bit of embroidery on, a framed photo of my husband and I with my parents, my beloved cat (who is now no longer with us), and a clock showing the exact time I was born. I also used some fluffy pink fabrics to make a small flamingo as that word is in the title of the company that I love working for. Also, on the books I sewed on words and/or phrases which I cut from selvedges. (Never throw selvedges away if they have writing on!). I love umbrellas so I have a row of books with selvedges sewn onto them that say Parasols, Splish Splash, Rain, Sunshine in the Rain, etc. It took years to find fabrics with these selvedges! There are sew many things you can do to personalise your quilt. ‘Funny’ that Jenny made the word Read for hers as that was my maiden name and with my initial I couldn’t really escape away from making a bookcase quilt!! Jenny’s quilt is super easy and effective so do give it a go.

Thank you! Btw, I didn’t mean my first sentence to sound like I was putting Jenny’s quilt down in any way. I meant that I wish I could have seen her version before I made mine which took me five months (part-time) to make. My initial is ‘I’, so I Read. Alas, I don’t think I can put a photo on here but if I could, I wouldn’t know how to. x

I like the idea someone commented to print a photo. How do the current printable fabr iui c products hold up to many washings? Many years ago I printed a label in black with color accents. .the black is fine, the color faded or is gone.

Sewing books will be reflected by sewing theme fabrics, gardening books will be done with plant and flower fabrics. Geography will be reflected with fabric showing hills or mountains or farms or places or place names. Astronomy will have fabrics with stars, the moon, and planets. And so forth. This is perfect for me! My daughter did a bookcase quilt in foundation piecing. It's not a quilt. It's a work of art. This is more my speed. And i won't be afraid to use it. Thanks Jenny!

I made my daughter a Harry Potter bookshelf quilt. She loves it! My infant granddaughter has discovered that the seams feel different as she touches it. Jenny's version looks much quicker than the paper pieced one but it's just adorable.

This would also be a great way to use up scraps as you would have many different books. I love the idea of the cat and vases with flowers! Thanks 😊

This is just beautiful!! I am a newbie quilter (less than a year) but your tutorial is so clear, I believe I can make this. I live in a very rural area and we have a lovely library, but it doesn't get a lot of "extras" from the County. I think this quilt would be a wonderful addition to hang on their wall. Thank you for this tutorial and I'm looking forward to more -- I subscribed today!! Julie

Julie, what a wonderful idea for your local library. Just encouraging you - I believe you can make this quilt! If the vase and cat blocks are too challenging, you can find many images on fabric with plain dark backgrounds and just use those. Happy sewing!

I made a bookshelf quilt years ago for our library…it hangs proudly…I want to say…what a struggle to lean the books…there was a formula and it wasn’t easy. You made this so simple Jenny. Thank you. The word Read across the top is genius!
