Main Street Railroad Crossing, Portland, TN
Ғылым және технология
Signal on the left: 3 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights, a GRS gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
Signal on the right: 4 pairs of WRRS 8 inch lights, a WRRS/GRS gate mechanism, and RECO LED gate lights.
The bell is mounted on the relay case under a small shield and I believe it's a Simplex mechanical school bell, but there weren't any labels on it that I could read.
This was the second train that I caught today: a southbound mixed freight with mostly autoracks with a YN2 AC60CW leading a YN3 ES44AH!
This crossing has to be the weirdest crossing I've ever recorded. Not only does it have a re-used school bell hidden under a cover on the relay case, but it just has a weird activation sequence. When the crossing activates, only the lights come on. A few seconds after, the gates begin to lower and the bell starts ringing. The lights continue to flash until a few seconds before the gates rise. The gates then begin to rise and the bell shuts off.
I have no idea why the L&N used a mechanical school bell here, but based on Google Street View of a lot of crossings on an L&N line in Louisville, KY, I'm willing to bet that this may have been something the L&N did for a short amount of time, probably to save money.
Also, the GRS gate mechanism on the far signal takes a really long time to rise. I smell a replacement in the near future. Also, some of you eagle-eyed viewers may notice that the wind-guard on that signal is broken.

That's definitely the most unique crossing bell I've ever seen! I once saw a GS bell that sounded very fast but I've never seen something this unique!

I know its the weirdest crossing I've ever seen. I think I know which video you're talking about as well.
Great catch! That bell rings faster then the 24th Street Railroad Crossing in Ybor City, Florida.

Nice catch. I love the old gate mechs and the 8 inch lights. That is the slowest gate I've ever seen. It would be funny if that crossing was right near a school!

The sound of a series of bells! High volume! This is a great railway crossing. It is a slow movement of the left side of the boom barrier, Smile :)
Great video! Probably one of the most ridiculous bells for a crossing, but I love it! 😂

David, I checked out at this crossing, and I found out that everything at this crossing is still there! I am going to try to get it in action.

Very strange. Most US crossings don't have a loud continuous old school mechanic bell. Nice catch :P

OUCH! Simplex bells on railroad crossings activated overnight will wake everyone up while you’re sleeping.

Never ever play this at 3 AM.
I think I know the reason why the lights start/stop flashing before the gates lower/rise. The gate mechs could actually be aftermarket conversions of gateless signals, hence why the lights come on and turn off before the gates lower/rise.
Fuckin fire alarm as a railroad crossing bell wtf

I mainly railfan in northern Alabama, but I do travel to other states a bit (mostly Tennessee when I do, though).

I state what bell it is in the description. Is there really any different between WRRS/GRS and GRS/WRRS? Because I don't think so.

BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO SAY GRS WRRS GATE MECHANISM. IS IT A FIRE BELL SCHOOL BELL OR A WRRS MINI BELL MOUNTED ON THE RELAY CASE?
@freebrickproductions
7 жыл бұрын
Read the description. And no, you don't have to say it that way. I do not see any laws anywhere telling me that I have to say it that way. Besides, WRRS/GRS gate mechanism rolls off of the tongue better. BTW, can you please reply to this comment next time to keep all of the discussion in one place?
THATS THE CROSSING THAT MY VIDEO WAS ABOUT

It's just a vibrating bell like what you find at schools and banks and old-school fire alarms. It was just used on a crossing for some reason.
