MAIDEN VOYAGE and I RAN OUT OF FUEL! | 2000 Pursuit 3400 Diesel with TWIN Volvo DIESEL Engines
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Time to bring it home! The new to me Pursuit 3400 is geared up and ready to deliver back to Maryland... ON ITS OWN BOTTOM. Ben and Roman set off on what turns out to be a 15 hour delivery. Engines are running, hull side is patched, and spirits are high. BUT, despite our best preparation and thorough planning, will it be enough to make the 185 NM trip unscathed???? Tune in to find out...
Welcome to Boat Restoration by Ben! This is a channel based around all things boat and yacht restoration related. I work full time in the marine industry and when I'm not at work, I'm currently restoring my one of a kind 1992 Sea Ray 380 Sun Sport. This is my 12th boat project! From $100 boats to 60 year old relics, I started small and worked my way up. Despite my best judgement, I buy boats that need A LOT of work and fix them up myself. I grew up boating at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, went to school to become an engineer, worked at John Deere for 5 years, and then decided to give it all up to pursue my dream to work in the recreational boat industry. Now having since moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, my mission is to share with the world my love and passion for mechanics and wrenching through my marine projects all while teaching you how to enjoy boats on a budget. I hope you Like these videos and please don't forget to Subscribe! Cheers, Ben.

"So were low on fuel but gonna keep running both engines at full throttle..."
Never seen a man so well kitted and prepared then to run out of fuel
Can’t help myself I’ve got to say it, think about this, you left dock for your first run in an unfamiliar boat on a 150 nm trip without filling your tanks, and someone has to leave a safe harbour to come to your aid because you ran out of fuel.

He also has a good idea and knows a lot about boats. I agree he should have had full tanks and spare fuel but apart from that I think he’s fine

also didn't bring phone chargers either? what if they ran out of fuel and had dead phones... hopefully he tested VHF radio before they left. Also a good way to suck all the crud, and biomass that was growing in that old fuel by running it low like that.

Left old unknown history of oil in motors.. At least change it out before going on 150 nm trip..
Hey man, I just delivered a 38 Tiara(sister ship) and it’s a very nice boat to run. I hate to be that guy but…. Always top off at every opportunity when moving a boat long distance. You never know what you may encounter…. Enjoy it. Great video. ✌🏼🇺🇸
I just became addicted to this channel by watching your previous video. GREAT content!!! Thanks for taking the time to document your adventures.

Same
6 to 8 hours is the passage plan. At least you brought extra trash bags you can throw that plan into
On a good note regarding your fuel issue, you got rid of all the old fuel and now you can run some clean fresh stuff in her!!
1/3 out, 1/3 in, 1/3 reserve always. No excuse for running out of fuel!
Those old units would still be better than the navionics app at least you could see the real depth of the water
Hey man your going to find out theres a difference in total gallons of fuel and usable gallons of fuel in the tanks.
Great video! Navigation on tight channels in shallow waters is a challenge. I know the UI on Navionics is 10/10 but the navigation is 2/10 (i.e. not good enough). That chart plotter might be ancient but would've kept you on course. Making similar mistakes is how I learned!

I got the same feeling when I started the video and the lids still on the plotter ,sounder and radar............, relying on a bloody phone app, for navigation ,neeh...and not fuel up before go that distanse..................... atleast hes gaining experiense..
Great job guys. Nice to know I'm not the only paranoid captain around. I'll never forget running up the Delaware bay by myself in the middle of the remnants of a hurricane in a boat that I had basically rebuilt that was from the 70s. I actually took her all the way from launching in Michigan city Indiana up and through the grand loop basically. All the waters around Chicago river and such are nerve wrecking. I also went during the worst season of when a huge mayflies brood was in the Midwest and I would literally have to scoop shovels full of them off the boat every couple of hours. Some people wind up cutting across the middle of Florida but we actually went all the way down through the Bahamas and as close to Cuba as possible at the time. I've always wanted to get a professional captains job to transport boats from wherever up and down the east coast. But primarily south Carolina and south through Florida or more south over even to Mexico. My favorite trip is probably starting in Pensacola and following the coast down to playa del Carmen Mexico. Truly an epic beautiful trip. Maybe we will get lucky would be legit to be your right hand guy some day
Should have stared 10 knotting it when you go low on fuel. Glad you guys made it. Good boat with good power
If I had that in SC on the ICW that would be heaven, I would live on it! 😊✌️❤️🤘🇺🇲
Lots of lessons learned here.
Great video, but you made the number one error as a sea going mariner...never leave without full fuel...enough said.

And diesel engines don't like to run outta fuel. Can't always just squeeze a ball like gasolina 😢
those turbos are screaming because it's making torque. it's struggling because it's 90% up on plane . if you give'er a smidge more beans it''ll get up on plane and burn less fuel . and you can back off on the throttles a bit . you want horsepower on plane . torque to get you on plane . But I get it man .. first time jitters .

Good post, good advice. She was running exceptionally well, especially after sitting on the hard for 9 months. No telling how much tank algae and bio-scum is in there. An hour in and those jitters should've subsided enough to get fully up on plane, then back off a tad to keep her up. Showed up prepared, but didn't top off. No idea what it's like up there, but down here, with a captain's license, running out of fuel at sea is a quick way to get that license rescinded. I'm not criticizing, just saying. Beautiful boat, and I'd wager he never does that again.
I always bring a spare jug of fuel just so that I never need it. Its always the case.
All that prep and all those spares, yet you didn't top off with fuel or bring extra? While I have not spent much time on the water, I am fairly sure that fuel stops are a bit harder to come by compared to when on land. One would think that when in a vessel that one is not familiar with the rate of fuel consumption and familiar with the range of said vessel that fuel would be a bit more of a top priority in the mentioned spares. But it does make for a more interesting watch. LOL
That is a nice boat!
why were you not using the depth finder? (not judging asking for real if this is a common practice? it feels like that would allay some fears?
Man those diesels sounds good
Oh please do not quiet down that sweet turbo whistle! Let it be and you will love that after awhile!
very nice yacht. twin yanmars👍. I think you would get better fuel mileage is you put your boat on plane then back out of the throttle till it stays on plane. it works on my chris craft!

The boat has been sitting, it's entirely possible there's algae in the tanks, a clogged, fuel filter, etc. Etc. It's also possible that the gauges could just Read incorrectly. That boat should easily go 350 mi on a full tank

Looking forward to seeing the repairs get done on this! Don't worry about the negative nancys. Even negative engagement counts for youtube ;)
Congrats on the new boat Ben!
Looks like you're all prepared for any emergency. But miss calculated the fuel. Probably should have had 4-5 Jerry jugs on board would have saved you a little grief, And got new home earlier, but that's boating.😮😮😮😊😊😊 Been there, done that. Going back and forth to Bahamas in south florida several times😊

Is this Lorne Armstrong? He’s always telling someone to smarten up or they’re not smart while being a complete idi*t😂if you haven’t heard of him look him up. It’s hilarious
Who doesn’t carry spare fuel in a diesel boat? 🤷♂️🙄 Who doesn’t top off along the way when you had the opportunity? 🤷♂️🙄 Hereabouts, if you run out of fuel at sea, your commercial captains license gets rescinded. 🙄 Technically in your plan there should be 1/3rd of your fuel for your trip out, 1/3rd for return trip & 1/3rd in reserve for “emergency’s / unforeseen events”. What if someone along your route had a break down or emergency & you had to tow them? You wouldn’t have had enough fuel. Sailing in on one engine running on fumes is a fail. Getting friends to bring fuel to you is a fail. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail. Learn your chart plotter, update its navionics card. I’ll give you a pass since it’s a new to you boat & your still learning but as captain it is your responsibility. Get spare diesel Jerry cans and stow them aboard for emergency’s to top off fuel BEFORE you run the engine dry. Priming a diesel engine at sea in an emergency isn’t an option.
As someone who grew up on lakes and loves the ocean and all things boats, I am in love with this Pursuit and I am so excited to watch what you do with it and your channel grow. I think this was an amazing investment into your content. I've gone back and watched the sea ray saga and it seems like you're doing all the right things. Very excited to follow along!
Bro rather runs out of fuel than buying fuel in jersey 😂😂😂
@2:12 and that's when I knew ... he Focked Up !
Good deal man she rides out ! Cant wait to see this boat out in the canyons
Really enjoyed coming aboard and making the run to home port. She is a beauty and anxious to see what your expectations are of this boat. OK wish you best
Did I hear you say you have a Capt. license? Or did you mean a boaters safety card.
Rinning low on fuel maybe consider reducing to hull speed and find a fuel outlet
Alright, finally, the video 📹, less go for A crazy boat ride! 🚢
Beautiful boat
Awesome new boat and project man! 👍👍 Really looking forward to see your follow-up restoration videos. 😎❤️
Dont change your channel i love it saw that last video had to go watch more good job man keep it up!
man what a beautiful boat an what a ride aye, like a big ol magic carpet ! you fixin to keep it? sure is a nice boat to spend the weekends on for sure
Very awesome Boat find and hope you can Make Her lighteralso. Looks likes Her loves to drink. Sir could you install better Turbos and a better Tuneup computer box? You got one Sweet Fishing Boat.

She wasn't fully up on plane, that turbo whine was from all the torque. Little more throttle to get her up fully, back off just enough to keep her up, and not only does the turbo whine subside, but she probably has another 70 odd NM left. 1/3 out, 1/3 running, 1/3 back.
I made the same mistake with my new to me tiara bringing it home about 120nm after purchase. Filled up before leaving but stbd engine started getting warm so turned around after 30 mins to go back. Dealer replaced water pump & left after a few hours wait. About 2/3rds of the way back started thinking not enough fuel but the delay meant it was early evening so fuel stations were closed. Decided to chance it & made it into home harbor about 300 yds from the dock before running out of fuel. Flagged down another boat coming in who towed us the rest of the way & got off the boat about 30 mins before it started raining. Foolish but very lucky. I should have known better.
Man yall couldn't have picked a better day all the water just looks like glass!!
you bring epirbs but not a phone charger.....
Hey Ben, awesome boat man, it rocks. I laid some faux teak in my boat, recently, it really quietened down the engine noise. All the best getting her tidied up 😊
That was the Cape May to Lewes Ferry
Old sonar is better than no sonar right?
That’s crazy!! I ran out of gas on the ocean side of Delaware when I moved my 33 pacemaker from Nj
Making motor moves!!!
always top off before you go on a long trip and definitely learn your machines even if they’re old some of them are better than the new shit
How much did you get it for?
I would run her12=14 knots save fuel, lower chance of mechanical issues and make good time
@francoisjackson

Did he do this without a depth finder?
Did you guys break in the cabin?
I'm really surprised you didn't go up to the fly bridge to check out the view
I know let,s run it wide open to see how for we get before running out of fuel. Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Hey Ben.
Why are both your Tans Oil Pressures gauges pegged at max????? Maybe not connected?
Fyi, that was a cape may/Lewes Ferry.
Good way to learn things is fuckup littlebit. I have work in boats 20 years and still all funny things happening to me. KZreadcaptains in comments seem never make mistakes. Keep making these videos. Greets from Finland.

Ever gone overboard in 40 degree water?
What brand are those gauges? They don’t make the original VDO gauge (I have a Tiara same year as your Pursuit dash and all) but yours look really nice. My oil pressure gauge on port side is fogged up. I used to be a parts manager at a Tiara dealer and Tiara couldn’t even get them anymore. I think in a previous video you mentioned they were original but they are not. The gauges on your boat look great. Also, if you have receipts for anything, did they have to replace any of the sending units?
North-up > course-up
So close 🤏
Cracking stuff. Love the noise it makes. Amongst the trillion armchair boaters, you could've knocked the revs down to half earlier on ? Not.sure of speed.vs.efficiency on beasts like this though. Love ot though. 👍
how much was this boat
Screwing the money end in to the pontoon is a brave move ....
Man, such an annoying and utterly unpredictable visitation of fate - running out of fuel! If only someone would design some device capable of indicating how much fuel you have, so that you could get a good idea whether you have sufficient fuel to make it to your next destination on a journey - like some sort of, oh I don't know, say a gauge showing the percentage or something like that. That guy would become a multimillionaire! Alas, such technology is always just a few years away but never seems to get any closer - like nuclear fusion.
Assuming it was 3/4 full, you had 200 gal and went 150nm. Is 1+ gal a mile good fuel economy for a boat that large? Thats a beautiful boat, up keeping that boat has to be very very expensive.
this is my nightmare. I always carry a jug of fuel just in case
Only time you go there for vacation is when you want to double your money🤑
And.....it could possibly be noted, you not knowing this boat at all, that running at the speed you ran, fuel would be rapidly used. Yep.
You mentioned going to the fuel dock and top off at the very beginning of this video and you either made a poor guess or a bad decision or in the excitement forgot to top off. Never trust the gages always top off to be sure of what you really have on board
Did you bring any Flex Seal or extra fuel?
Can you explain why you throttled up with the left stick when getting on plane?
@semajniffirg230
19 күн бұрын
putting the left throttle forward like that syncs the throttles so you can run both engines at the same rpm
What iPhone Naviconics did you use in this video? Liked it

Swim platform lift?
So you have sea tow insurance❤?
I put $ 2:00 in yesterday 😂
If you had ran that thing fully up 9n plane she would have burned less fuel and you would have been able to back her off a bit and the turbos wouldn't have been screaming so loud.
Filming on the bow like it's July, No man-over-board drill, no EPIRB or Survival Cold Water Immersion Suits, NOBODY on the Bay at that time of the year. First time engines went above idle was throttling out of AC Inlet???
Remember when your navigating with a vessel like this Mass have your tank full because you never know what could happen you never run with ever think to the destiny that you were going that is a big error as a captain learn your lesson
You said that boat draws 10 1/2 ft? my80 ft Viking doesn't draw that. Maybe you are mistaken

Your not wrong Atlantic City is a dump, sorry sketchy! There was a time when it used to be ok but it is a crusty shell of it's former self!
What was the reason for not fueling up before setting off? Obviously regrettable at this point.
Low on fuel ? Slow down ! The least you could do is top off, with some new fuel in with the old. Trusting unknown fuel senders ? That stand alone Furuno gear is good stuff. Always use that depth sounder when underway, and that radar could save your life.
Only a couple hours into the trip you had a little more than half tanks.. should of known better man
Don't be a lesser human turbo whistle is God's noise. I thought you were a mechanical guy.
How can your phones be dead when you can charge them on the boat? Not topping off the fuel and not plotting open fuel docks along the way is not very smart. You brought the oil but no extra fuel cans?
@BoatRestorationbyBen

Entertainment? Just kidding. We were as prepared as we could be for the worst. Maybe we should’ve thought about the less drastic situations like running out of fuel or phones dying. Thanks for the tips! Sometimes you forget a thing or two.
Runs out of fuel 🙄🙄🙄 you guys seem smart
.
Sorry. 150 miles, not once you consider pulling into any marina and filling fuel before risking be stranded at night? just no.
So you bought a boat that gets less than 1mpg at 20 kt, you need headphones to prevent deafness while running, and you think you got a great deal!
I'm not a big fan of your "free use AC/DC audio, bro, just let it roll.
Crazy irresponsible getting anywhere near running out of fuel. Especially when making a video. You’re the reason boat insurance and towing is going to be too expensive for “Regular people” soon.
