This video shows 8 months of work in 25 minutes on the legendary racing boat known as Duracell. Duracell was built by legendary American sailor, Mike Plant, who beat the American record for solo circumnavigation in the first Vendee Globe in 1989. I am lucky to own this piece of American racing history.

Cool to see someone doing professional level composite work on KZread. I have watched so many of the "big" channels and cringed at the quality of their fiberglass work and their use of PPE. So cheers to vacuum bags and full face masks.

Thinking you might enjoy Mike Pateys Draco and Scrappy builds. He goes into great detail into how to get a perfect finish using carbon fiber as he builds his airplanes. I'm here because (I believe) of MJ sailing and their 42' cat build. They are also doing a good job and using PPE.

Clearly you dont know how bad it is then.. changing the structure that was designed specifically to have those bulkheads in those specific location. Is dangerous you can really screw things up doing that because you end up weakening the structure

@@DerekGraham777 nah. It'll be just fine. You sound like one of those people that think you need to put the stock tires on their car or "iT cOuLd bE dAnGeRoUs." Or you need to put the same brand oil in your car everytime you have an oil change or "iT cOuLd rUiN tHe EnGiNe."

@@DerekGraham777 If that boat was built right in the first place (which I'm sure it was given the original owners) then it's overengineered as f***! Moving a support from one spot a few feet over will have little effect on the structural integrity of the boat. Obviously we can only look at video, but that thing looks over built and solid.
Thanks to magic carpet I have found your channel. Now binge watching. I am going to really enjoy your journey. Good luck with this project.

had a dream I had a 200 ft 2 masted ship along those lines.
I was skeptical or concerned at first by the scope of modifications you were planning. But you are making it happen. I am very impressed with the pace you are maintaining. And while I am not an expert it does seem like you are doing a pretty good job on everything. Anyway, my hat is off to you.
As someone who grew up in New Zealand and has been around sailing yachts and fiber glass for many years, I will be watching with interest. Restoring that yacht is a great project. Looking forward to seeing her floating again. Greetings from Thailand.
It's so cool to see someone doing something useful with their life. I'm astounded at your abilities and I scratched and was itching as soon as the fiberglass cutting started 😅 I'm so chuffed to have come across your channel. Thanks

I remember when my girl would say that it is beautiful while i was working on something. I felt like you looked when she said it to you.. RiP baby. Miss you each day and each time I look at the ocean.
Excellent job, Love watching the progress! Thanks for sharing!
I followed Mike, back in the day, He was an awesome and admired sailor. Glad to see that Duracell is going to have a life again. I sail a 35' Cheoy Lee on Lake Superior. There is nothing like being out on the water with nothing but the wind noise and the boat boning her teeth, under full sail.
Love this fantastic rebirth/renewal of this iconic bit of maritime history! Thanks 🙏
This is so inspiring!!! Thank you for taking the time to document your work. I've learned so much already. Easy watching and lots to learn. No frills. Thank you Magic Carpet.

Thanks for documenting this. As if doing the work wasn’t enough effort! This is a great project and it’s great to see it taking shape!
It's been a joy to watch you and your team work. So very cool. I'm 62 and for the first time I'm about to service/pull apart a 50+ year old turntable. Always admired people who have that practical hands-on nature. Never too late. I'll take my time, watch several more videos and make sure I'm organized ie like video taping what I'm doing and each part removed is placed so as to keep track of the order parts were removed then returned to their proper place. Thanks.
I'm so happy for that beautiful boat, and so grateful to you for doing this. Thank you for saving that gorgeous beast! Excellent work too. It's amazing how many talented people are out there fixing sailboats.
Wow, what an ambitious and exciting project. Really enjoyed your video. Can't wait for more, and thanks for taking us along on the journey! The Steiner arch structure in wood grabbed my attention - very elegant and functional - very nice.

That is so correct
When I was building my F-9A tri in the early 90's, I used alot of cardboard and tape to do mock-ups of different panels/parts to make sure I liked the shapes. Then used those cardboard pieces as templates to cut the DuraCore, Carbon Fiber or aluminum. Some parts took many iterations before I got to what I thought was the right shape. It's easy to scribe on cardboard and it's cheap or free.
Well for one your a hell of a shipwright !! What an amazing boat to start with .it’s going to be great watching you transform it into an incredible sailing yacht!! I love the lines of the widows and the roof.I’m in!!

No kidding, easy too take apart, gotta have skills too put it back together. Concerned with the removal of the ballast tanks tho. That's a fairly tender hull. He is also adding weight with the pilot house, raising the centre of gravity. Always wondered what happened to these race boats, would of been nice too see her restored keeping her as fast as possible.
Thanks to Magic Carpet for introducing your story! I look forward to following your journey. I'm a sailor of 50+ years but seem to enjoy boat project stories more than the actual sailing. Great introductory video to get an idea of your massive endeavour and your impressive skills!

I am stoked to watch this project. Wishing you guys the best.
I'm so glad I found this channel. What an incredible project.
You are very thorough in your design, it’s so nice to see such a good methodology during the build/re-model.
When you said that all your friends were there to help I half expected the camera to pan around to no one in sight. Very nice, simultaneously giving me hope and dread about my own project.
I love the shape and design of your workshed, its a thing of beauty

That's a glorious yacht hull, such beautiful lines.
I have been watching your videos from the very beginning, I have to say this episode is by far the best ! Very well done. Please keep the videos coming.
So much labor intensive work!, Great job, real nice layups!
Impressed with your workmanship and planning.
I have just restored a boat myself for the last 7 months and know how much work it is. You got a like, a subscription and a comment after 3 minutes of video. Great work.
A fabulous project.... Its great to see your production techniques... Thumbs up !!
What an awesome video! I am excited to see your progress taking shape.
Yep MC has sent to a crazy build of a boat this is massive wow is an understatement looking forward to see this vessel come to light
I'm so very impressed ~ I've taught myself the skill of composite construction and these are really next level. Very nice and so aggressive with the redesign. I built a trimaran once... having everything down to the exact amount of material is expensive. Having all the tools and skils takes a while to acquire. I'm 70 + and I LOVE these kinds of projects. Good on YOU !

What an awesome project! And being done with some serious skill.
I watched that first race in 1989. It was inspiring. It’s my favourite race. Duracell was high tech then. Nice gantry and shed. I spent a few weeks working on the new ‘Wild Thing’. Grant and the crew great bunch of guys. Really interesting watching you cut the interior away and modify it. I know some are screaming at you but the build is solid. Cheers.

So glad Magic Carpet linked your project!. Awesome so far on the build. Total respect for an expert shipwright from a 'hobbyist' (71)that built his own Longboard from scratch (bucket list 3 years ago) only to watch the resin coat going off before the cloth was fully wrapped. At least the board was finished, despite the rough colour flaws. Probably I should have used epoxy. Lived and worked in Bermuda for several years but unfortunately didn't know anyone in the sailing community. Fascinating history of the yacht.
