When you've been sailing for a good while and you think you have a well laid out boat, then you see something like this and realise you have a lot of room for improvement hahaha. Very very enjoyable video. And even if you wouldn't know who Skip is you can tell he's the real deal from his high density moustache.

I work on the yard that build this ship, my colleague and I did all the electrics and navigation equipment. It was my first project when I started working there last year. I don`t know how many times I have watched this video, but every time I find something new! She is an example of form follows function to the nth degree. Beautiful in the extreme! And what an absolute dream team collaboration, Castro, Novak and KM!
Practical with a capital P. Function first, form second. Love it!
The narrator is excellent, explained everything very clearly for the layman.I bet he's a first class skipper.
Skip Novak is The Man. Any youtube video with Novak is epic.
I've sailed on many pleasure craft - power and sail - but none have ever felt well laid out. This one does - it's a true working boat and it shows. I'm stunned at the engine room - it must be a dream to work in. My only surprise was the halyards being on the mast. I would have expected them to be drawn into the cockpit, so no crew would ever have to be on deck when reefing. I did appreciate the surfeit of winches - it's good to have many and to be multi-purpose.
Not a flat-screen TV anywhere. Quite different from a cruising boat. I love the utility of this boat. A lot of thought for heating, but I never heard him mention AC. I guess he doesn't need it where he goes.
Skip Novak is an absolute genius! The Vinson of Antarctica is a real masterpiece, because it has everything that is needed for survival, with human safety and comfort features in every area of the sailing vessel. There are many manually operated features and back up systems to the back up systems. I do believe that the anchor can be electrically operated and the steering is powered, but I bet that it has a manual back up rudder system.

He would inspire confidence in the eye of a storm. Love how 40 knots still gets described as a breeze.... Fantastic.

The thing is that most charter boats are designed to optimise the space for guests, so the designer makes the engine room as small as he can get away with. In this case the boat has been designed with other priorities, good access to all the essential mechanical and electrical systems has been moved right up the list.
@rykehuss3435

@@pcb1962 Yea but those charter boats arent cruising in polar north and south regions. To go there you need a very different kind of boat, like the Vanson here. If you want space you can buy an Antarctic cruise ticket on a cruise ship

where else would you build a Yacht like this !!!
...bit like the last guy who commented - sailed all my life - my first Sydney-Hobart was the infamous 1998 - so I've carried with me the need for safety and smart design ever since as Ive made single handed storm sailing (or as windy as it gets) my own little frontier of exploration . So to listen to Skip talk is like hearing GOD as few would truly understand the depth and quality of the information he is giving ... I have learnt to prepare for everything and for everything to happen at the same time ... don't make the first mistake as one just cascades into the next and so on ... its how people are hurt and boats lost ... and also that situations are just a product of time on the water - the more time you spend on the water - the higher the probability things will go wrong - so have plan A, B, C already rehearsed in your head ... blah blah ...I'm preaching Skip - I think I get it why you venture into that insane place - its the adrenalin and risk - coupled with the meticulous planning and control .... its the adrenalin junky who also has the skill to manage his risk - well almost all of it - so don't go and die OK- you're a true legend mate
"What more do you need". So true. The design and build is exceptional.
A different world of sailing. Having sailed a small traditional long keel yacht for years in the West of Scotland I am used to green water and roughing it. I take my wet cold hat off to you. Incidently I remember Tony Castro from his university days in Glasgow. I still have one of his paintings.
While some 'licensed captains' struggle to impress their YT viewers, this skipper is straight to the point. Kudos to the team.
That is a fantastic machine... Truly amazing and a testament to human ingenuity...
I’m blown away! My remaining life would be spent on board. I learned to sail in 1968 on the Muskoka lakes of Ontario Canada in a 14’ wooden “Moth” I had just read “Gypsy Moth Circles the World”. And then it began…… Peace
The pinnacle of Skip's Pelagic concept... Along with Tony Castro and K&M the dream team have created the most competent sailing vessel afloat... I would hope that the concepts and ideas trickle down to manufacturers building so called "Expedition boats"... 👌🏻
Skip Novak!!!! Love this. Thank you so much
Nothing better than to listen to a person who knows what he / she is talking about and Skip Novak certainly knows his stuff better than almost anyone.
I had the honor of being on an expedition on a previous version of Skip's boat. This boat is a masterpiece of yacht building! Greetings from Russia!
Outstanding presentation...Skip Novak knows what he is talking about and the "Vinson of Antarctica" reflects that very well...
Steve Dashew would approve! What a capable vessel. I had a Tony Castro designed CS30 back in the '80's. So happy he is still at work in his craft. Cheers
Better and more safely designed than most Navy boats I've been on!
I have to say. There’s a lot of experience and practical wisdom in that boat. Of course it’s quite different from traditional cruising boats. I need to watch this a few times and take some details Into my plans...
