BOAT RESTORATION BY BEN

BOAT RESTORATION BY BEN

Welcome to Boat Restoration by Ben! Formerly known as Makin Motor Moves... This is a channel based around all things boat and yacht restoration related. I was formerly a large tractor and diesel engine engineer at John Deere but now I work full time in the marine industry. When I'm not at work I an very busy with my family and working on boats. I am now on my 13th boat project! From $100 boats to 60 year old relics, I started small and worked my way up. Despite my best judgement, I buy boats that need A LOT of work and fix them up myself. I grew up boating at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri, went to school to become an engineer, worked at John Deere for 5 years, and then decided to give it all up to pursue my dream to work in the recreational boat industry. Now having since moved to the Chesapeake Bay area, my mission is to share with the world my love and passion for mechanics and wrenching through my marine projects all while teaching you how to enjoy boats on a budget. Enjoy!

Low on fuel ? Slow down ! The least you could do is top off, with some new fuel in with the old. Trusting unknown fuel senders ? That stand alone Furuno gear is good stuff. Always use that depth sounder when underway, and that radar could save your life.

this happens when you use wood as structure.....coosa is they way to go, but a good survey would have told you the issues, you were not scammed, you didnt do your due diligence

Assuming it was 3/4 full, you had 200 gal and went 150nm. Is 1+ gal a mile good fuel economy for a boat that large? Thats a beautiful boat, up keeping that boat has to be very very expensive.

We have a 50' or so Sea ray Sundancer in a marina here- 14 yr old boat with less than 1000 hours, was a "floating condo" for the original owners- two years ago went on a service call for a complaint of stb engine running rough, low power/smoke. Cummins QSM 11's. Stb engine has scored two cylinders, rust all over rocker arms, pulled injectors and bore scope verified. Gave an estimate to pull the head, evaluate further. Took six months to get the owner to pay for the diagnostic, then he thought he had hung up the phone- was loudly telling someone how we "just wanted to rip him off" so we brought his parts removed to do the diagnostic back, set them in his cockpit and said "have a nice day" It's still there, he bought a boat he can't afford to fix. Nobody else in town will touch it, it's like he expects an experienced diesel tech for five bucks an hour or something.

Not Scammed. I buy old vehicles and equipment all the time. Fully expect to do repairs. Older stuff is built far better with few exceptions. Most new stuff is overpriced garbage. Engineered to fall apart and need constant maintenance or replacement. You could have discovered this problem, then negotiated the correct value and worked out a deal. Seller wins and you get an expensive education.

Cracking stuff. Love the noise it makes. Amongst the trillion armchair boaters, you could've knocked the revs down to half earlier on ? Not.sure of speed.vs.efficiency on beasts like this though. Love ot though. 👍

Dude, I feel your pain I went way down in the southern Kentucky way back in the hollers bought a bass boat. Everything supposedly worked. We brought all way back up here to Northern Ohio and another damn thing worked in the floor was rotted out, fixed it up sold it With the Akron bought 93 Sunbird you were supposed be perfect had replaced the whole freaking floor replaced the fuel tank replaced the seats. The motor had a crack 12 inches long freeze plugs were missing but the guy said he just headed out on Lake Erie impossible I got the motor all put back together and put it back in and then now I found water in oil. I am so depressed. I can’t find anybody to show me how to adjust the shifter cables manually. It goes reverse forward, but with the cables it doesn’t do anything, so I’m stuck. I don’t wanna part it out my wife upset. Have a blessed day.

Why not hire a marine surveyor for several hundred dollars, before investing money,it's logical. A marine surveyor saved me from a $20k rip-off involving a lawyer on the front lines.
