    To everyone who is new to chess and especially this situation: Kovalev was intentionally taking extra time to make simple moves (he can also blitz these out in a few seconds) to level the time advantage. This was excellent sportsmanship from him. At 4:47 and 5:00 Carlsen adjusts pieces before pressing his clock to communicate to his opponent that he is okay with the time disadvantage now and Kovalev should no longer delay his moves. Kovalev then speeds up and they play an almost normal (bullet) game.

  • @williamrobert9898

    @williamrobert9898

    11 ай бұрын

    I respectfully disagree with your assessment, I do admire his sportsmanship of wanting to wait before the clocks were started but once Magnus arrived, he played quickly until he reached the theory phase and began contemplating what to play next to utilize his time advantage, it is not rare at the top level to see a very strong Blitz player waste a lot of time during the first 15 moves so I can understand why for those who are new to chess, it might look like he is being nice but that actually occurred before, obviously at the end of the day no one knows what actually happened except for Kovalev so we can just exchange our POVs

    @@williamrobert9898 This really is not "the theory phase". These players have at least 10 lines 12 moves deep in every opening. They are studying chess for many hours everyday besides being extremely naturally talented. I respectfully disagree. He was not thinking what to play. He might have been thinking about options but not because one option would have been better against Carlsen or not, rather what he would have enjoyed more. Even I, a 1700 player, know the theory here by heart.

    I just went through all the comments (as you are doing now), and I am absolutely stunned at the extent of this "debate". The word that not one person has mentioned, but is *everything* to explain what happened is "Integrity". Chess is a gentleman's game, same as golf, billiards, etc. Naroditsky is a Grand mother f'ing Master- part of the elite. If you knew *anything* about being a true competitor, you'd understand that Naro told himself "no chance I'm getting an asterisk next to this win- I will try to win man to man- no advantages to either." This is not opinion. This is one HUNDRED % what happened here.

    I love a game of Chess. I was a casual player 30 years ago about 1600ELO. I've just taken it back up again after 3 decades of total redundancy. I hate Blitz Chess, I prefer to play untimed games so that when I'm in a jam I can spend 10 minutes on the problem, which is for me ½ the fun o' playin!

    I hate bullet too, i can't follow, but that's only because I'm a complete noob. I think high-level chess players like bullet because they're only using pattern recognition and less problem solving and planning for every eventuality.
