they had ENORMOUS shoes to fill. As far as I'm concerned, Sir Patrick Stewart was chosen by God to play both Jean-Luc Picard and Professor X. And I was skeptical of Sir Ian McKellen, but he absolutely hit it out of the park as Magneto, especially in the first X-Men film all the way back in 2000 but man I still remember that summer night so many years ago in 2011, walking out of the movie theater after watching First Class and thinking to myself that McAvoy and Fassbender were the perfect choices to take over the roles

Magneto did all the heavy lifting, Xavier got pushed around.

In my opinion, this ending was satisfactory. Seeing for the last time these two actors who magnificently played Magneto and Xavier interacting for the last time was incredible.

It was an okay ending. It certainly finished off Charles and Erik's story quite well and stayed the best it could throughout the franchise. All of the other characters... something probably could have been done for them.

These two are way better

A rare case in these stories. Even though their views and intentions are 100% different, they still respect each other and there's no hate. Not really. Even in the older movies, Erik did care about Charles. He even mourned Charles when Jean "killed" him. It's rare that the villain and the hero genuinely care about each other.

They've always been good friends. The only issue between them has never been anything other than their radicaly different view on solving the problem of Humankind vs Mutankind. They have both devoted their lives to helping other mutants and they recognize this mutual common purpose in each other. I have never understood the concept of "Frenemies" better than when I watch these two together.

I find it hilarious that Charles already knows Erik’s coming, before he’s even near the café. Either Erik’s thoughts are super loud, or he (in my headcanon) mockingly singsonged Charles’ name in his head, just so that the telepath would pick up on it, and know that he is coming. 😊😆

I was going to comment something similar, Erik knows that if Charles wants to he can just read his mind, but the two respect each other so much that Erik also knows Charles would never do it They're 2 sides of the same coin, both wanting the exact same thing, and I think both know the other is right, but Charles is too hopeful to give in to those thoughts, and Erik is too battle scarred to ever drop his guard

The two pulled off Magneto and Xavier's relationship so well. Even when enemies, even when hurting each other, they still respected each other.

I am so sad that we won’t ever see them together again…

You've got to admit that Erik cares about Charles more than anyone. He knew that Charles just lost his sister and his most dear student, basically his daughter. (He kinda raiser her since childhood). And when he needed him, he came. Not like Magneto, but like the Erik Lehnsherr, he first met in First Class. The chemistry is just ❤

One of my favourite lines from magneto, no matter what Charles will always be his brother

Most of the films may not be that good but you can't deny the acting is just amazing james mcavoy and Michael fassbender really did an amazing job at playing professer x and magneto the same goes to Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen they all did so well in really bringing the characters to life and really making you see who they are. There's isn't much of that in the mcu.

The last two X-Men films were definitely weaker, but all the Magneto and Xavier scenes continued to be fantastic. Not just cuz of the acting, but the dialogue as well. Their characters were just so well realized, especially with Fassbender and McAvoy playing them. They elevated literally every single scene they were in.

A headcanon that I have is that both pieces were white ones as it never shows what was in the other hand, so Erik could have been offering two white pieces because he sees the white as the more pure good symbolism and believes that it suits Charles more than him.

I think there’s something wonderfully poetic that the final X-Men film ends with a chess game between Charles and Erik just as the first film did. Only this time it’s just two friends enjoying each others company as opposed to two friends turned enemies declaring war. Full circle.

The scene of the so-called "divorce on the beach" is only surpassed by this moment that we can call "the proposal in Paris" if that does not make them soul mates I don't know what will.

I pray that the MCU will be a COMPLETELY different, alternate reality, because in this story and in this reality, they (and we!!) got a happy ending and don't need to add anything. It's like a programming rule: 'If it works don't touch it'.

No matter how good or bad you think these movies are, these two when they're on the screen together, it pure magic.

Even though erik and Charles have very contrasting views but the respect and care they had for each other is always there. This scene very much symbolizing how deep their friendship still is and how their old differences have died down.

💡Interesting fact: At 0:50 you can see that Charles is wearing the Rolex Milgauss ⌚. It is not a popular Rolex but I think it is a great choice from the producers and it shows their attention to detail. This watch is known as the "Rolex for Engineers" given that it has an anti-magnetic core, allowing it to protect the watch's mechanism and small parts from magnetic fields of 1000 Gauss (0.1Tesla). I like to think that Charles wears it to protect his watch from Erik's magnetic field manipulations when close to him.😀

Fassbender and McAvoy were amongst the few redeeming elements of this movie (along with Zimmer's score).

I wished Charles shedded tears in this scene... To know his friend really cared about him, despite "WHY" he's in the wheelchair to begin with...

Now they just gave Erik a happy ending. In X-men Last Stand, even though the world is safe with human can coexist with mutants, Erik lost everything even his best friend and he played the chess by himself. In the Dark Phoenix, they gave Erik a happy ending that the world was safe and sound, he could met his friend Charles and play the chess like they always do...

It may have been said but one thing that I love is that the thought of playing a game of chess against a person that can read your mind would have to have so much trust ion that person to do the right thing and not be lead to temptation. Erics trust that Charles will do what he believes to be morally right would be the only thing that would stop him in a simple game let alone the fate of people.

While I do not like this movie at all, I still like this ending for Charles and Erik

This is one of those things people subconsciously know but couldn’t tell you. One of the main reasons the x-men was so unique. Charles and Erik. Arch nemesis, bitter enemies, and simultaneously best friends. Not many other stories that were able to effectively pull off such a relationship for their characters.

i hope when i'm old and retired, i can live in a retirement home go downstairs and just play chess every day with a friend i made and not care if i win or lose

Erik & Charles, the heart & soul of the Xmen franchise indeed, Erik comes from so much suffering, Deeply Charles know that, despite their different points of view, they have a deep connection of friendship.

Say what you will about Dark Phoenix, I thought this scene was pretty darn good at tying up the story between McAvoy and Fassbender’s portrayals of these characters. They started as friends, fought over the years, disagreed at times, but eventually found a way to respect each others choices. I honestly do think the conclusion for this version of the characters was handled just about as well as it could have been.

This was really beautifully done. Xavier and Magneto were always friends deep down, and I love how this scene finally acknowledges that bond on the surface without any animosity. It's sort of an oddly placed scene in context of the film's plot, but I get the sense that they might have filmed this scene months after principal photography ended. I think once it was announced that the X-men films would not be continuing at fox, they went back and filmed this scene in order to give the series some closure, and bring it back to the two characters who started it all. And they accomplished that goal beautifully.

My biggest problem with this movie is that it’s set 30 years after X-men first class and they barely aged. Also, I know James was shooting Glass at the same time so he had to get buff but it was weird seeing a buff Xavier…..

What I always find interesting about Charles and Eriks dynamic unlike other big media "rivals" or "enemies" is neither wants to end the other, like in Transformers Optimus Prime and Megatron eventually know their war can't really end without one dying by the other's hand.. but X-men.. neither wants the other dead, Charles wants to truly have his friend back (and redeemed I think) while Erik doesn't truly harbor ill will against his friend, but doesn't think they are equal to humanity and thus they butt heads

I watched the entire X-Men series for the first time in April-May of this year, and immediately started shipping Charles and Erik. Hats off to the fans who watched the movies as they came out and waited anxiously for the happy ending for years, you are the best!🥳

I have been a superhero fan for as long as I can remember, and an X-Men/Marvel fan since I was 11 and first saw the animated series back in 1992. In all my years as a fan, Charles & Erik are still my favorite duo. It’s such a classic story told in the most fantastical, yet relevant and relatable way. Bravo and thank you to all 4 actors that brought this pair to life on the big screen for the last 20+ years!

The rest of the movie was terrible and boring. These two actors practically carried the franchise.

For us who grew up on the original movies, to finish it like the first movie with them playing chess, it feels like full circle.

This scene is a nod to the ending of the first X-men scene. Where Charles and Mags end the movie playing chess in Magneto's cell.

Great movie...I just wish the details were better. Like Erik should have had white hair by this time. I wish Scott was in charge and not Raven, Hank when he's in beast form should look bigger with muscle like he did in days of future past. Beast looked awesome in that film. I can go on about details, but , other than that, I love the X-Men and and this was a great film. I know it's not like the book by Byrne and Claremont but it is what it is. I like to imagine that Erik and Charles start a new X-Men team in France 👍🏻🤷🏻‍♂️😃

Canceled sequels and involvement of Marvel Studios In May 2016, Kinberg said that Dark Phoenix would be the first in a new trilogy focusing on the younger versions of the original X-Men characters who had been introduced in Apocalypse. It was initially planned as a two-film story, with the parts to be filmed back-to-back. However, in late pre-production the studio decided to only produce one film with the prequel cast, as new management did not want any more X-Men movies set in the past due to the reception of X-Men: Apocalypse, resulting in rewrites such as replacing the Hellfire Club with alien antagonist. For a while, it was still possible for the Phoenix story to continue in a potential sequel, with an eventual crossover with the New Mutants series based on the "Inferno" storyline, but those plans were ultimately cancelled after the acquisition of 21st Century Fox by Disney caused the film rights to revert to Marvel Studios. This resulted in footage being cut from both the Dark Phoenix and The New Mutants films that had been intended to be expanded upon in sequels. Chris Claremont confirmed the two-film plan and revealed that this film centers on Jean as Phoenix and the second was going to feature Dark Phoenix. According to Claremont, the film's purpose is to make the audience fall in love with Jean, while the purpose of the second was to break their hearts. According to visual effects supervisor Greg Butler, the story was originally meant to be more cosmic, but that aspect of the Phoenix was meant for the second part of the two-film story. In June 2017, it was rumored that the Shi'ar alien race would be featured in the film, and Angelina Jolie was being looked at for a role, though she was not expected to accept the part. Jessica Chastain was also potentially being considered for the same character. Chastain herself had admitted her character kept changing, adding that she did not even know that her character was named Vuk until she saw the movie. Chris Claremont remarked, “My problem with both iterations of Dark Phoenix onscreen, the original by Brett Ratner and the newer version by Simon Kinberg, is, I don't think you can do it effectively in 90 minutes. Overall, Dark Phoenix was seen as inferior to its predecessors and a disappointing conclusion to the X-Men prequels.

It’s nice to see these two going from having their differences of ideals and opinions about what’s best for mutants to just having a nice, friendly conversation over a game of chess; it really shows they care about each other even if their ideologies clash.

You just KNOW Erik was thinking “Oh Charles~!” as obnoxiously and as loudly as possible.

Erik and Charles maybe on opposite sides but respecting and caring for one another makes them like Yin and Yang in the symbolic dance when it spins. As for the movie, I may like it but wish it was better so there would've been another in where Jean is alive in her White Phoenix form in 2nd half, with more mutants appearing after Logan film. And Alkali-Transigen has been publicly exposed and shutdown.

People sure missed the point of the characters. Both had the same motive which was the preservation of mutants. Charles had the higher ambition of protecting all life while Erik had the deeper rooted ambition of saving mutants at all costs. Erik's ambition stemmed from harsh trauma at the hands of cruel, ordinary people while Charles' ambition stemmed from the bonds formed through his trauma and his ability to understand the trauma of others. Both had no ill will towards one another because there was no reason to have ill will towards each other. They were genuine friends wrapped up in a higher purpose that forced their hands apart. It's a really interesting dynamic and it's sad that it was portrayed as more of a sideline plot.

Magneto/Erik: "how's your retirement, Charles?" "I'm seeing your old friend." "Fancy a game?" "A long time ago...you saved my life. Then you offered me a home. I'd like to do the same for you." "Just one game. For old times sake." "I'll go easy on you." *chuckle* Professor Charles Xavier: "what are you doing here, Erik?" "No, not today. Thank you." "No, you won't." *chuckle*

Remember the Original Film? Xavier said he was looking for hope in his old friend. Now Magneto is filled with hope in this New Timeline, bringing it to THIS Xavier who had lost his.

Thats why I like this more than last stand no way Magneto will side with Jean after killing Charles. These two are like brothers. I chalk it up to Magneto grieving and taking his frustration out on wolverine in the woods. Magneto would not sit by and have Charles murdered right in front of his face. If you thought you seen Erik out of control, do something to charles.

I also love the mutual respect that Erik and Charles have for each other. Erik doesn't even have to tap his forehead and make a comment like "No cheating Charles." They both know they can trust the other's word.

A small but very cool touch is that Charles is wearing a Rolex Milgauss, which is known to be resistant to magnetic interference.

Professor X has a lot of pride on the fact that he doesn’t use his powers on people without their permission unless it’s a life or death situation. Which is why magneto wears a helmet when doing shady shit. He knows Professor X will stop him but doesn’t when he is Erik just being friends with Charles. I personally view Erik/magneto as a Bruce/hulk situation. Erik is very different and seems like a normal person but when he puts that helmet on, you know people are going to die
