14:30 The anime is mostly loyal to the source material, except for one thing about Sister Nana's personality, and that was that even though she loves Winterprison, she also loves feeling like she's a damnsel in distress, hence why she always went to talk with dangerous magical girls like Calamity Mary or Cranberry, because she knew they would attack her and Winterprison would defend her like a knight. Sister Nana ending her own life makes more sense in the novel because rather than just feeling lonely, she feels extreme guilt because she knew that Swim Swim was planning to kill them, but Nana assumed Winterprison could win.

Compared to other dark magical girl animes, the way they make magical girls from a random in-game event is so comedically perfect when you take in consideration the events in the show.

I loved Hardgore Alive vs Calam just because she was so adamant on killing her, only to find she would always come back. It always felt, however, that the whole "cant transform if indentity found" shit was PURELY because of Alice. Her ability to never die would make her unstoppable against every single one of them and it's proven by Calam when she STUFFS HER MULCH IN AN OIL DRUM, FILLS IT WITH CEMENT AND DROWNS IT IN THE SEA.

Swim Swim can be the most hated villain and all but, she was too young to understand and easily manipulated, and straightforward, too. So much so, she deluded herself into "becoming a princess" by killing them. Poor girl. 😢

I don't feel sad at all for her! All i saw was a crazy kid who killed her friends and other magical girls. She had no kindness for Tama; remember what Swim swim did to her after Cranberry hurted her? It was during episode 11 or 12. That was so cruel! Ruler didn't told her to do that, Swim swim did it on her own. I am supposed to feel sad after she killed her friend? No, can't happen!

The thing about this show is that it's adapting the first arc, which was only one novel and some side stories, if I recall correctly. And the first novel was all centered on Snow White and her character development throughout the death game, making her into the person she is in Arc 2 onwards. What the anime did was take the focus away from Snow White and show everything else that was happening outside of her POV, which in most cases would be a good thing. But the way it handled that was just...no, it did not work well. I think there was an announcement for Arc 2's anime adaptation some time ago, and I hope it's handled better than Arc 1.

i remember watching this series as it came out in the hopes it would be good because the premise sounded interesting and the art style/character designs (for the most part) were creative and well-done. I feel like this is one of the animes that would have benefited so much from being 24 episodes instead of just 12 >_< It's surprising that it's getting a second season--hopefully it won't suffer from the pacing/plot weirdness in the first?

Ah yes the magical girl version of Future Diary And is somehow less stupid

I have an undying love for the light novel series, but i have to admit that the first arc is kind of weak, sister nana being a sexy nun kind of makes sense in the novels, i hope you like better the second season, because is coming!!

As a read of the LN, yes, they do end up fixing all the mistakes its just the generally sad coincidence that the 1st Arc (at least for me) is probably the weakest while the 2nd Arc still is among one of my favorites (hopefully the announcement goes through cuz we've only gotten other volumes as well as readings). And as somebody who has followed Site out of pure curiosity and has read it to the end as well as the author's past works, I give my condolences.

Honeslyy visual wise the twins were one of my faves, they looked rlly nice and the singl wing thing because they conolete each other as tins kind of thing was great but im having trouble getting the angel motif qnd then the speech bubble halos thing was such a great touch imo... A lot of potential. Honestly a lot of these drsigns had great potentiall if they were more fleshed out to me Also i fekt that when u said swim swim is the WOOOOOIRST LMFAI

Random person here. My view for this series (as someone who was only for first arc and gain others from wiki) is that it's kinda okay. Sure it's cool deconstruction of battle royale but the problem I found is that it's quickly going into Too Bleak Stopped Caring territory (with most characters needed to suffer from break the cute process, there are not so much characters you would root for because they either flat or unsympathetic, some sympathy characters die, etc.) and it's doesn't help that the show has a bad way to be established in the era where every single magical girl works needed to be darker and edgier and/or deconstruction. Despite this I really wanting to reimagine it and I have many ideas so far.

As a big fan of the series who thinks the anime is about as good as it could be considering the source material (without giving it another 12 episodes), fair enough on not vibing with it. The show does what it can to fudge over some of the more glaring issues the first novel had without bringing in stuff from later arcs that at the time probably had no plans to be animated. For example, Nemurin literally has no lines in the first book. She's just a design who offhandedly dies. They had to pull in a later side story and integrate it with the main story to actually give her a character. Which is better than what the novel did, but brings up the flashbacks of doom that's probably the anime's most glaring flaw. Everyone has this issue really, getting far more characterization long after they die. Which you just grow to accept in the books, but definitely doesn't work for an anime. Even with its problems, I think the anime is at least decent. Everyone is characterized just enough that you probably care about a few of them before they bite it, the action is brutal, the magic is creative, and when it ends it feels like a conclusion with room to have more and not a sequel bait. In an ideal world there would be more episodes where we could see the wacky adventures these characters had just off-screen (most of which weren't written when the anime came out) to get to know them better, but oh well. Hopefully the second season can figure out how to manage the series's strengths and quirks better.

as someone who emersed themselves in the light novels (well the first 4 full read kept putting off the book cause work and video games) but the world just got me hooked since watching the anime a few years ago and only found out about it thanks to a friend on facebook from the convention scene and a fellow magical girl fan joked about swim swim saying swim swim is shit shit and it made me wonder why are they saying that and watching the anime I agreed with them but when it came to the light novels and the extra context it made everything just click.

The anime is ok. I like the magical girl's design; Top speed and Sister nana are adorable; the heroine is kind and her friendship with lapucelle was cute, the opening is great and catchy, the action is exciting. It's not that scary compre to Madoka magica, more tragic than terrifying. I was surprised when the deaths arrived but not scared. Ruler's ability is useful BUT she has to; point her staff directly at her victim, cast the spell and not moving. Sounds more annoying than quick plus i think she can give one order person. At least, it's more useful than a giant sword. Yes Lapucelle's weapon is cool BUT if it broke, she will loose the fight. Against any magical girls who controls elements or who have super speed, she's dead!

Neither one is the same One is about a battle Royale.And another one is about Save the universe It'd be like saying daybreak illusion is a rip off of Madoka

I like this series….. Was expecting an Danganronpa nod but not YTTD acknowledgment! ( I like both)

I binged this in the middle of the night. I watched madoka when i was 10 and had bren emotionally invested and traumatized. Thisbshow was just a big gasp of WTF and why'd they die. Still invested but too many people died 😅. Like when the main girl's guy friend from her childhood died. Like the scrne was so fast that it took me 3 eps to realize that he died.

Dude i love your magical girls reviews. Could you maybe review mai otome? Its about a school where young girls go to become otomes, protectors of royal leaders. Also the composter Yuki Kajiur that worked on magica madoka worked on this, and music is so good. I enjoy wtaching this as a kid. It honestly has a great story and world building. But it did not age well, like seriously. Compared to all the magical girl showed you reviewed, I feel like the worst in terms of gross, creepy and WTF. Anime being anime, all that stuff went over my head as kid. This anime is not for kids.

Good review, as always. Although this one felt like a pot calling a kettle black due to how positive your opinion on Yuki Yuna was. I do think the people calling it “another Madoka rip off” wasn’t undeserved though. Madoka clearly inspired it in some ways like the evil mascot, the first episode being lighthearted, and Snow White and Ripple’s whole thing, but I’m not saying it’s a rip off. It’s just inspired by MM. Before you review Site, could you consider making pit stops at Looking Up to/Gushing Over Magical Girls and Spec Ops Asuka? I’m interested in seeing your opinions in them. And, maybe Granbelm as well as it’s another Madoka inspired dark magical girl battle royal series.

@@CakeoftheMews I’m not sure how long a “mini” review of Looking Up to/Gushing Over Magical Girls would be. There’s a lot wrong with the series, and it hasn’t really received some fair criticism since most people who read the manga only say good things about it like that it’s a coming of age masterpiece with brilliantly written characters, and a deep exploration of sexuality, and most criticism of it seems to be towards the characters’ ages and the fanservice. (The manga has a 7.85 on MAL as of writing this, and before the anime came out, the only things about it on sites like KZread, Reddit, and Twitter were all praising it.) I know you’re going to talk a lot about the age of the characters and the fanservice, but please do give some time to how bad the story and characters are.

Am i the only one who don't like Nemurin and Winterprison's magic? Yes it's kind to help peoples in their dreams and it's cool creating walls BUT Nemurin can't fight during the day and Winterprison's walls can be easily broken. If you have super strenght, you will win the battle against her. If they were made of metal or diamond that would be more solid. Also, her long scarf is not helpful. Winter can easily trip on it, get caught by her enemy then killed. Her outfit and magic are not protecting her 😕
