Magic in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe | Nyamepi Camp

Episode 3: We arrive at Nyamepi camp in Mana Pools, staying at camp 21. We soon find out why Mana Pools is often referred to as a magical place...and the place of thieving vervet monkeys!
Did you know Mana means "four" in the local Shona language, Mana refers to the four large pools found in the park.

Whenever I see a video or photo of an elephant standing up reaching high into a tree, my first thought is that this is Mana Pools. I've only had the privilege of visiting there one time. It was with a group of men. We had elephant and buffalo in our camp. On a walking safari, we were charged by a mother elephant who thought we had come too close to her with her little one. She stopped the charge and then came again. I remember the guide saying with the gun aimed at her..."I don't want to have to shoot this girl...". He didn't. She turned away. We went back with what we thought was an amazing story. It was! But, it was topped by the group who went canoeing on the Zambezi. One of their boats turned too close to a pod of hippos and was attacked and tossed from the boat. They made it to shore and the second boat was able to help get them back to camp. When we look to look at the canoe in their storage area I noticed a second canoe with a hole in it. "When did this happen," I asked. "Last week", I was told. Then, a third canoe with a hole. Same question. "Last month..." Mana Pools is a wild place!

What a Beautiful location! The landscape is very special and then to just have various groups of animals „strolling“ and „lolling“ around as if they didn`t have a care in the world and those „people“ were just another species stolling and lolling!

Oh the memories of the camp and surrounding area. Mana has to be the most amazing, special and most breath taking locations on this earth. Watching an elephant stand on his hind legs to get the pods - just spectacular and awe inspiring. The eland of Mana Mouth, the hippos and crocs of Long Pools , very special. Not forgetting the mighty Zambezi river, truly magnificent. Mana Pools holds a special place in my heart and will always be a reminder of my time exploring it. Thank you for your footage and look forward to the next instalment. Kind regards to you all.

Mana is definitely as magical as described. The vegetation cluster, which seems unique to that spot, provides a glorious backdrop for the plentiful animal life. One hears of the *vast and mighty* Zambezi but until one actually see the scope of it's expanse, you truly can't grasp how awe inspiring (and treacherous) this river is! High5 on the pre-birthday gift ... what a brilliant idea! 📻📱💻📹[I *must* have power!!]

James, it's as if you are rewarding the Elephants with music as they rise up into the tree's reaching fruits then into the last view is the red moon, your series should reach the caliber of Netflix sounds like you made good memories, worthy of someone with the dough to get you a portable solar panel and generator for all the future films you will make. Thank you for sharing your videos.

Happy Birthday, James! Another delight from you two! It seems vervet monkeys are a true disaster everywhere you go. While trying to think of some deterrent you might employ I first thought of maybe a recording of lions roaring you could play but quickly realized then you would need a deterrent for lions which no doubt would be arriving en masse at great speed after hearing it. Back to thinking....

Wow, a tree climbing elephant. What an incredible sight that was. You could wait a lifetime to capture a clip like that. I did a canoe safari on the Zambezi in 2009. That was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We were advised to avoid getting closer than 1 metre to the waters edge and definitely not approach the same place twice.

Brilliant! I am old enough to remember a time when "luxury in the African bush" merely meant that the long-drop was not colonized by a swarm of bees or wasps. The cure for monkeys are a half-dozen rubber snakes from the local China shop. Simply scatter the snakes on the lids of food containers, tables and the roof of your vehicle though the monkeys do tend to lose control of the bowels when encountering a snake which then creates another problem… Don't neglect poking your rubber snakes with a stick in order to eliminate actual snakes before packing up camp and moving on. What i would love seeing is a minutes of outtakes at the end of every video containing those remarks that inevitably ended up on the cutting floor.
