The way Charlie Rose says almost off the mic, 'Flesh is product.' is kinda terrifying right? Tell me I'm not alone here.

I got love for Simon, but I disagree whole heartedly with his premise that Pornography over the last 50 years altered how men look at or treat women. Isn’t it said that “prostitution is the oldest profession”? With that being said women paid for for sexual favor at the behest of men is older than modern pornography by thousands of years. The sexual subjugation of women is ubiquitous in the three major religions. Pornography, if nothing else, is not a perversion of the male-female relationship. It is by design how men articulate their most lustful and basic one-dimensional perception of the opposite sex without the layers and complexity of love, romance, or even passion.

It is amazing that David Simon would talk about misogyny and at the same time rip off three years of work of a female author who explored the heart and soul of some characters in the first season of The Deuce. Maggie Gyllenhaal cites Ladies of the Night as important to her understanding of her role. Dominique Fishback cites Gentleman of Leisure. Simon used the author's work, but never bothered to get in touch with her or credit her. I would call this misogyny.

The two ARE inseparable. No Capitalism= No Misogyny. Capitalism underwrites all inequality.

as was the majority of the world at that time. I think with the number of women from an array of backgrounds involved with the democratic socialist movement today we have a very good chance to not repeat the mistakes of the past. Not arguing with you, and would love to continue convo to hear your thoughts.

That’s true, the majority of the world was misogynistic at the time. Yet during the revolutions things started to drastically change for women in Russian Empire/Soviet Union: the new state became the first major country to grant women the right to vote, abortions were legalised, Alexandra Kolontay’s ideas of women rights to be respected and recognised as independent sexual beings along with her opposition to traditional patriarchal family became prevalent in the press and politics. But gradually everything started to regress when Stalin came to power and misogyny became both a tool of the Great Terror and a (perceived) mean to gain more workforce by re-brainwashing women into believing that their sole purpose is to give birth to more Soviet citizens. Granted, Soviet Union of that time was far from marxist communism, but it was even further from capitalism. I guess my point is that although the capitalism does really benefit from and reinforce misogyny, it is not its sole cause. Those in power in any socioeconomic ideology may decide to seek to gain control via proliferation of such a system of disadvantage. So I agree with you - women should stay together, stay vigilant and empower other women in order not to make the mistakes from the past

Wow! Thanks for the great response. Vigilance and solidarity I think would be key for people to keep in mind, and I believe that democratic socialism is a system better designed for the "bottom up" to succeed in ensuring constraints on political power than capitalism.

christopher corvino, Please elaborate. Different how? Did you actually get to talk to to women who remember what it was like to live before and after Lenin? Because my great-grandmothers (also confirmed by myriads of research papers and history textbooks) would tell me exactly what I wrote prior: things got exponentially better -not great, better- for women when Kerensky and then Lenin came to power, and then their rights were suddenly taken away around the time of the Great Terror. And after the death of Stalin the USSR and then modern Russia continued to be a patriarchal society.
