I have never felt so identified with a group a women with this open conversation AND this lighting. Excellent choice.
The top three comments are about the lighting and sound, not what these women are saying. That's not what we as the audience should be focusing on.

While I do respect that Evan Rachel Wood has survived being raped and she may have more authority on the subject than I do, I do not think rape jokes are ever, ever okay. No it does not depend on how good the joke is. Jokes about rape make light of a disgusting crime which is still covered up and portrayed badly in film/TV today. We cannot joke about it.

Wonderful that there is a conversation. Why is the baseline (successful) women on television? Are the experiences limited to (successful) women on television?

I watched Great News recently (really fun show nobody talks about) and Nicole Richie was great in it. Her character was most lovable character written to screen since... ever? I already love Silverman, fan of Westworld so also Rachel Wood, don't care much about Maggie Gyllenhaal and don't know who Yvonne Orji is. However they are right about the sex scene stuff, go watch Sansa getting raped in GOT, we focus on Ramsey's enjoyment instead of Sansa's pain, which is awful since Sansa is the main protagonist. My ramblings are over now, scroll on..
the lighting was set up for 16 k
Damn, I love all of these brilliant, talented women!
Was this conversation taken place following a funeral?
I watched this film years ago and a film on television starring Evan Rachel Wood brought forth the memory of this film. I remembered more the conversation maggie ghyenhal had in speaking of her character on the series the duece. Since at the time the series was being debated heavily in it's depiction of sex work and "idealizing" sex work as though young people would begin seeking to involve themselves in such from having watched a series. Or the series glamourizing sex work with conversations that it'd only place female in harm's way. This was amid the ongoing metoo movement with males attempting to claim they'd be falsly accused of sexual misconduct. Or that boys will be boys conversations unfairly depicted male attention toward females.
this lighting is fantastic. of course it was intentional. it's so you see what they actually look like. that their skin has scars.

Perhaps she has worked through her experience enough to be able to talk about it. Sometimes, when a person is ready, talking to others is also a healing way to overcome such trauma.
7:44-8:26 Hmmmmmmmmmm
The thing about the rape jokes is: the reason a lot of them are funny is because their implied premise is: rape is awful and we all agree on it. If the pun was: haha she was raped lmao, (hopefully) no one would laugh.
Support the Me Too Movement. I am afraid of sex because it is full of diseases and death. Me Too Movement matters like Black Lives Matter. I support the movement not just for celebrities but just average real life people who don't want to be a sex symbol because of the money, fame, or charm. Personality is the key.

Interesting and complex female characters have been on the screen since the silent film era, there may be more dynamic roles now because there is more content coming from a diversity of media. It’s a shame they present the strong complex woman as something ‘new’

Amazing how the Hays Code is never mentioned. Actress understanding of film history needs to be elevated so we better understand why censorship & misogyny is so ingrained. However rape jokes, like dead sex worker jokes are deeply disturbing & shouldn't be taken lightly. Also sex workers shouldn't have their experience spoken of by non sex workers because we are sick of being exploited by civilians for marketing & clicks.

@maddiemm73

What’s wrong with selling skirts? I don’t think it diminishes the value of the conversation. I don’t think cynicism is always valid about companies creating initiatives or “creating community”. It can be done authentically and I don’t think is necessarily at odds with running a business. I think when done right, it’s human centred capitalism, not late capitalism.

Personally I think plenty of awareness has been raised around women surviving rape. In the interest of equality, Hollywood should be raising awareness around men getting raped, over and over and over for decades, centuries....
@maddiemm73
3 жыл бұрын
Any rape culture and issues are important to highlight and stamp out, always. Personally I don’t think we’re anywhere near the point of enough people in society truly understanding the level to which rape culture and the lifting of men to the detriment or ignorance of women is still pervasive... example being Evan Rachel-Wood’s point about sex still being predominantly portrayed as about men’s pleasure, not women’s. We’re getting there, but still - it passes through all those people in production who don’t see a problem with it, so there is a way to go

*“What if alongside feminism’s focus on making **_women’s status as equal to men,_** one of our principles was making **_women equal to women?”_* - Paula Giddings. Look at the ONE African descended woman specifically being placed the furthest from the center of the space. Typical. When the word "women" is used in the U.S. it's usually referring to "white women." It's typically used in the context of white women trying to get some *pseudo power,* and *constantly being in a tug of war with white men for the power seat (the white **_patriarchal_** power seat, to be exact) to the exclusion of everybody else.* Let’s be real: this is _really_ about white females fighting white males for _patriarchal_ dominance and control, not equity. It’s as if white females actually think we _all_ just really want to be under white women’s thumbs. NOT. 😂 Lol. Please. It’s not going to happen and it’s not going to work. Tired of the fakeness.

John Mulaney had a joke where he and a random woman were in a hurry to catch a train. And suddenly he notices she's looking over her shoulder and running away from him. But he has to keep running too to catch the train. And he wished he could yell: I WON'T RAPE YOU! I laughed at that one and I was raped. It's all about the punchline. I've actually never heard a rape joke where the punchline was: hahaha let's rape her.
How is this an important issue that needs to be discussed? Women across the globe a still facing REAL oppression yet here we are discussing movie sex. Come on.

You can multi-task and care about multiple things at the same time. There are children starving in Africa but it doesn't mean you can't talk about obesity in America. Same thing.
Sarah Silverman used to be edgy and hilarious Now shes Woke aka PC Pandering and mundane
Hehe, American women will never really be happy. Lack of Power ≠ Unhappiness. As for the beginning part, why they are upset that the powers-that-be aren't willing to do what they want, and have more feminine sex scenes, it comes down to the fact that they are bigger organizations and have more to lose from a failed project. It's ironic that the woman from Insecure didn't learn that lesson from Issa Rae. Issa had a small project she built on youtube, which was low risk that eventually evolved into Insecure. In other words she had to prove a workable formula before the big boys were going to back her project. Yet that's the truth about things. Power cannot be taken, it can only be generated from the bottom up, anything you get from the powerful through politics or activism is just on rental till the zeitgeist subsides. You'd think 2 generations of feminists would've figured this out by now, but apparently the trappings of power still clouds them from the reality of power.
What do you call a Group of United Strong Women? A Brothel
I can't stand Sarah Silverman.
