I loved the stories from behind the scenes on this story. The American actors had never heard of the show, so were given a box set and got completely hooked on it. Apparently they were dumbfounded that it was never a huge success in America.

David is a great actor. Although he primarily does comedy. He could easily pull off a serious role. Maybe he has, I'm from the U.S., and only know him from this show, so maybe he has, and I am just unaware of it. Like I said, I dont know much about his acting career, but he pulls this off well. It's hard for any actor to make that transition. Like when Matt Dillon was cast in Something About Mary. The director did not want to cast him, because he had always played the tough guy, but his persistence got him the job. Still hard to believe him in a comediac role, after The Outsiders, Rumble Fish, etc.

David played an inspector in a detective show called 'A Touch of Frost', which is a more serious role. I think his acting in A Touch of Frost is his finest, because he perfectly pulls off a character who is a serious and passionate detective, all the while showing very human qualities. It's really good, would recommend!

A great role by David Jason was that of the Cambridge college concierge Skullion in the mini-series (I believe) Porterhouse Blue, based on the novel by Tom Sharpe. Although the novel is a farce, Jason played the character dead straight.

Noticed this was shown on Gold over the Xmas hols, and I thought this could be my lucky day in the chance of seeing the uncut version of this underrated episode, but nope they had to cut bits out. I don't think the cuts where the ones that are cut on DVD (which are just stupid), but they did cut part of a scene where Del & Rodders are on the river boat and Del is shouting over to Barry Gibbs house; it cuts straight after Gibb says "I need all this". I thought "arggg, why can't they show it uncut? they cut it when you buy it on DVD and they cut it when you pay to watch it on Gold". Wish they would release this episode uncut as well as all of the rest of the heavily cut episodes there are of OFAH. The worst cut on Gold of OFAH I saw recently was The Frogs Legacy; I know the episode well, and they cut almost all the dialogue between Del & Rodney in the Nags Head where he mentions Rodney's new job - it cuts to Trigg's nieces wedding without the scene ending. The only chance of seeing the uncut version of this episode (as well as the others) is from the original TV broadcast (and maybe second airing) on TV back in the early 90s. I've heard the uncut episodes can be found on itunes, but I find that hard to believe.

I always feel when I see how this ends that Rico realized he could not kill Dell boy because he was so like his father. The fact that when he is talking on the phone and is off guard and says lovely jubly as goodbye, and immediately is amazed that he said it kind of hints at a connection. I also feel that Rico's father would have seen to it that his son was a crack shot, so he could not have easily missed him with a rifle with a telescopic sight, so he was doing it on purpose. Also, Del may have made a conscious choice to protect Rico because when he tipped off customs about the drugs he did not tell them about Rico as well. I think that Del may have had fatherly feelings towards Rico and only realized why when he found he looked just like Rico's father. I also wondered if when Rodney met Don Occhetti, that he realized that what Rodney was doing was because he thought that he was his brother and maybe respected that. I did wonder if Occhetti might have had a weapon in his track suit pocket that he might have wanted to use, but decided not to because of this.

Either way I think David Jason said he enjoyed playing two very different kinds of characters, I personally liked the bit when Nicholas Lyndhurst has to shout at the Mafioso version of Del, because he is angry at him for ruining the chance of him going on holiday with his estranged wife and trying to patch things up with her by coming a long instead and knowing she couldn't come and you can almost see David trying hard not to laugh during the scene as Nick grabs him and calls him a GIT!

I don't think it is that easy to do good comedy, especially over long periods of time. John Sullivan and the cast managed to very well though.

The Dragon Killer: OFAH was shot in front of a live audience on stage in the BBC studios [ and of course they used outside locations ] it isn't "canned" laughter you are hearing it's real.

This is probably the ONLY OFAH I like a lot, simply because Delboy is in mortal danger (I can't stand the prick) - but I had a VHS recording for many years with no laughter track, which suited it perfectly, and when it comes on DVD? Laughter track, so bad you can't hear some of the dialogue. GAAH!

Foebane72 I prefer the laughter. But I know what you mean there are certain scenes where if you haven't watched it you wouldn't catch what there saying. Or understand

there was never a laugh track in only fools and horses it was a live audience in the studio that watched the scenes live and were recorded, also they get the dialogue perfect I rarely have ever seen them get the timing wrong and speak while audience is laughing loudly and ive seen every episode at least 50-100 times depending on the episode, series 6 possibly thousands althogether, greatest series in the entire world of comedy history.
