I mean is it tho? The song (and it’s “rap”) were so bad that the studio did not release another single from it other then the James Bond soundtrack song. The studio actively ignores this song existed. It kinda killed her career (because it was a VERY bad song, a BAD rap verse AND because Republicans at the time HATED IT at the time but I did not care what they thought then or now). The kind of toxic patriotism that Madonna pointed out in the song, and that led to Trump was rampant at the time. The 2000s were a weird time. They made the 1980s look chill. Don’t get me wrong. I actually love this song but it’s kind of in a cringe way. The same way I like the 80s song, Mickey, or the band Enigma or or Wilson Philips.

What I do appreciate about this version of the video is that we get more footage of Madonna in that outfit. She looks ffffing fantastic. But the director’s cut is extraordinary and I’m so happy we’re getting it remastered in HD next week.

Tbh the lyrics in the "rap" are pretty lame, and exposed Madonna as what she was... A bored privileged white woman who feels her most important message to deliver at that point in her life was to "complain" borderline "denounce" the shallow and superficial priorities in her life (a.k.a. Shatte) but conveniently failing to mention / leaving out the part where she "renounces" these commodities, she figures, materialism and superficial things don't bring happiness to one's soul, so if I bitch about these privileges my life is bombarded/pampered with... Then maybe people will realize and dispose to find happiness somewhere else other than all these things I have (but don't publicly enjoy) then that's enough contribution to make towards society... Which in turn, will create a justification for personally having these things I have, strong enough that I don't need to give any of it up, as long as I'm teaching all girls to not be sluts in real life, then it cancels out everytime I have to do some slut dance moves in my slutwave song music video. Looking and acting like a whore and feeling like a whore inside, doesn't actually make you a whore. Whore is bad. I'm too good too rich for being whore. Whore is Whack. She is speaking from her experience, and how none of these things matter. The rap doesn't have to be Shakespeare. The rap is a joke of sorts. It has lots of irony to it.

The most surprising thing about the entire American Life album is that if the production had been different, only acoustics involved, it easily would become her best album. I mean, just listen to the non-electronic part i.e. the chorus. That's so good! Her voice also sounds better when it's unadorned by unnecessary glitchy production.

I listened to it a couple times more in 2003. And from there No other song from Madonna was played on the radios at least in PA and Fl (where I have lived) up to today only Like a Prayer and Into the groove and just about once a month It’s what you can hear of Madonna in the US radios today

They gave Madonna a ton of crap for the original video which they said was too graphic so she had to tone it down. Madonna didn't create those images, world governments did and they have the nerve to tell her to tone it down? Why don't they tone it down?

Back when this album came out and everyone kinda say her career was over, a misconception, cause shes still relevant. Maybe the album was ahead of time but still its one of my favourite

I mean, it DID effectively end her career. It brought her string of hits, to a screeching halt. Sure, she had Hung Up and 4 Minutes, but she never had a string of mega hits again, the same way she did, in the 80s and 90s. She's relevant now, for all the wrong reasons.

I think it flopped because was too political, perceived by Americans as pretentious and opportunistic of her to address such issues, the rest of the word was dealing with other problems at the time to get invested in her "cause" if you wish... But, overall its production and non single tracks are great...

QR One probably you’re American, cause Hung Up is literally the biggest smash hit of the 00s, no.1 in 41 countries, most danced song of the whole decade. So huge it made it into the Guinness World Records book. But it just hit the #7 spot in the billboard hot 100. Everywhere you go in the world you can feel Hung Up and many other songs (including Celebration) were huge and they’re still club hits.

The sound of the album was ahead of it's time but the problem was she got political outspoken about the biggest American Export product - weapons and army! In France this album sold almost 1 million copies. In UK this song peaked #02 on the charts (selling just 500 copies shy from #01) and the second single from the album "Hollywood" was also a #02 Hit in UK. On Mediatraffic worldcharts "American Life" was #01 for 4 weeks as the best selling single worldwide. At European HOT 100 the song peaked #02 peaking TOP 10 in almost all Europe including at #01 in Portugal, Italy, Denmark and Switzerland. The single was also #01 in Canada (where Madonna is the artist with more #01 songs ever among all artists - 25 of her songs got to #01 there! - her latest #01 song in Canada was "Give Me All Your Luvin' " in 2012).

Actually, those people are nothing but completely dumb and bigoted people...this song is an expression of Madonna's love for her home country and her own "american dream" path in life...and she always has nurtured that...many of her songs with gospel choirs and elements that portray accurately all the strength and diversity America has/is, speak for itself...she may have added some political/social critic to the mix, like she always has too, and as we all know things aren't perfect anywhere, including in the USA...so it's utterly unfair to say she was "unpatriotic", "slack" & "serious" with this song...I hate that american neoconservatism Tea Party alike bullshit, because it's that that keeps preventing America to move forward in the right direction...

Hate to break this to you but by the time she released this, music was already out the door. She hasn't released anything good since Ray of Light. I am only listening to this for the first time now. I purposely avoided it when it was released b/c what the country was going through it seemed ridiculous to invest time for. Suffice it to say, I'm not impressed by it and won't bother listening to any other track from the album.

This American Life “Edit Version” Video Is Always Better Than the Explicit Version. Even the Madonna Solo and All Flag Version Is Better.

The director's edition version of this music video which was just released is brutal and brilliant. Madonna grew in my eyes now.
