"It Must be Love" actually dates back to the 1970s. The song was originally recorded and written by the English singer Labi Siffre in 1972 - and released as a single that same year. The Labi Siffre original peaked at Number 14 on the UK Singles Chart in January of 1972 - however the song failed to chart in the US. It was also featured on his 1972 album "Crying Laughing Loving Lying". Madness's version was originally issued as a standalone single in late-1981, peaking at number 4, and spending 12 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. It also appeared on their UK number one compilation album "Complete Madness" the following year. It has also appeared on many other Madness compilation albums since that 1982 release. In 1983, the Madness version peaked at number 33 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. One interesting fact about the Madness version of "It Must be Love" is that Labi Siffre makes a cameo appearance (as a violin player) in the accompanying music video for their release. And you're right about the Reggae vibe of this song. Madness specialise in Two-tone, Ska & Reggae music - usually mixed with elements of Pop music.

"Two-Tone" was a second wave "Ska" movement, where UK artists were picking up on racial equality, and rebel music from Jamaica. See: The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, Bad Manners, The English Beat, and The BodySnatchers. Jamaican, "Ska", was a forerunner of Reggae, in the 50's, and 60's. You would trip, to see Bob Marley with short hair, and a suit and tie, but that's how it went down, back then. Look up: Toots & The Maytals, Desmond Dekker & The Aces, Blues Busters, The Ethiopians, Byron Lee & The Dragonaires, The Skatalites, and Millie Small. In the 90's, came "Third- Wave", a decidedly more Punk, and "Oi", type sound, that took the Rude Boy/Rude Girl, rebellious spices, and blended in some more immediacy, and whimsy. Try: Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake, Operation Ivy, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Voodoo Glow Skulls, Goldfinger, Save Ferris, The Aquabats, Sublime, and No Doubt.

Yo yo yo india great to have you back and a great choice of band to come back to, Madness are one of my favourite bands of all time. Another 3 great songs from madness are House of fun Baggy trousers Love struck Also you say you were having trouble describing the genre of this song, it's called 2 tone, a genre of British popular music of the late 1970s and early 1980s that fused traditional Jamaican ska music with elements of punk rock and new wave music. Its name derives from 2 Tone Records

Labi Sifre who wrote this song is the guy on the end of the string section who smiles into the camera in the video, it was huge hit for him in the early 1970's, as for the video Madness were all about fun and having a laugh but think the UK has different sense of humour that doesn't always translate across the atlantic

It was a minor hit for him in the 70s. It definitely wasn't a 'huge' hit. It peaked at number 14 in the UK and only charted in 2 other countries, peaking at 25 in the Netherlands and at 46 in Australia. That's hardly a 'huge' hit... :)

It must be 'One Step Beyond' for me, as my introduction back in the day to their ska-infused fun. Purely sentimental, iow. All great, witty, musical presentations, a treasured memory easy to conjure anytime in these "everything-all-the-time" times.

The first words of the song is "I never thought I'd miss you half as much as I do." You can interpret it as you want. Maybe they are just not seeing each other for hours or days. That can be tough enough when you are in love. Or perhaps it's permanent, as their outfits hint at, and suddenly it became a sad song. It's still one of my favorites from Madness.

One day, a few older folks ( could have been 20-80 to my 14/15 year old eyes) joined in harmonizing with him. And a bus lady said "Sweetie, you should give him a chance. He's trying to say he would like to take you out.". 😳 Um what??? No, he just likes music. 😂 I did give him a chance we dated on and off for 5 years.

Trouble is 16 year old kids like me couldn't even spell the original composers name! and as for soppy love songs [ Yuk } hence the silly video. Re-react without the video - just the vibe and its a very respectful heart felt rendition by 'Sugs' the lead singer. I never liked most of their songs but this one is my favourite

Madness usually do happy sounding Ska/Rock Steady music (= those 2 styles were the ancestors of Reggea)...this one "It must be Love" was one of their more melancolic ones (cover version of Labi Siffre). One Step Beyond = pure dance floor tune (cover version of Ska Legend Prince Buster) Recommandations : "My Girl", "Nightboat to Cairo", "Baggy Trousers", "The Prince (=was their debut single), "Bed and Breakfast man", "Shut up", "Cardiac Arrest", "Swan Lake" (=instrumental dance floor tune, Ska interpretation of the world famous classical music theatre ballet tune composed by Tschaikovsky) Other british Ska bands I loved back in the 80ties and still love today .."The Specials", "The Beat"(in the US market they were named "The English Beat"),
